“Not quite what we expected”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Having spent 11 days at East Winds Inn (3rd visit) in the north of the island we thought we would try Hotel Chocolat for 3 nights on the way back to the airport. It was our first visit and their first year with guests, I believe. It is a cocao plantation that is expanding into the hotel market but currently it can better be described as a restaurant (with great views of the Pitons) with accommodation close by rather than a hotel. A small pool and lounge area are situated below the restaurant but sadly there is road noise or the continual music from above. We did not use this area but tried to relax in another small decking area and maybe this will be improved for shade when the foliage has grown. The walking in the area, is without doubt, beautiful. I will not dwell on the elegant food as I suffered a severe bilious attack and spent one day asleep. However, I was shown kindness and concern by management and staff alike.

Thanks for your notes about the beautiful walks and our restaurant. We do also have complimentary beach shuttles as another option, but your comments are certainly noted.

reviews containing nothing but superlatives are boring so i am reminding myself now to end with my one criticism of Hotel chocolat in stunningly beautiful st lucia. the setting is phenomenal. you are situated high up over looking the pitons two beautiful tropical mountainous peaks that plunge into the Caribbean. the rooms are chic as is the entire hotel. "plantation chic" was one description, another might be bob marley fuses with W hotels. the underlying theme of the chocolate plantation with which you are charmingly encouraged to take part of is delightful. Staff could not be better, friendly helpful attentive. the food is amazing, like dining in a michelin one star every night. If you require beach time, there is the free shuttle every morning at 10 a.m. to take you to either of the two world class beaches but a few minutes away. a beautiful walk takes you down to the volcanic mud baths. amazing botanical gardens also around the corner. oh yes, the criticism. late one night 5:30 a.m. a knock on the door. "Sir your car is ready" some nice polite man was saying. "what are you talking about!" I raged. "We're booked for eleven nights!" "Yes sir", he answered again politely, "Last night was your last night." "You mean I have to leave Hotel chocolat?" the nerve of these people!

We were a bit worried about staying at place that clearly cooked around chocolate although I love chocolate and we have been members of the chocolate tasting club for many years we booked b&b only. Out of the 9 days we stayed we ate 7 times at the Boucan restaurant it was so good, local foods including raw chocolate with a Caribbean and European twist.

We wanted to see if the policy of encouraging locals was working and all but 3 of the hotel staff were local. The staff felt like a tight team which was well trained and see,ed happy in their work. We spent some time in the gardens and the plantation even grafted a cocoa tree and made our own chocolate bar.

We wanted to walk the Piton and the hotel organised everything from early breakfast through taxi and great guide. I also climbed thePetit Piton which was not so normal but they still found a great guide who although less than half my age looked after me well.

The hotel organised a boat trip up the coast which was breath taking.

I would go back any time to a truly magic experience.

Room Tip: They are all good, we especially liked the shower which was largely outdoors with great design.

Having stayed at the Inn at Marigot Bay in St Lucia for 4 nights and then sailed to the Grenadines, before returning home I wanted to treat my wife to a belated 25th wedding anniversary stay for 2 nights / 3 days luxury at the hotel Chocolat back in St Lucia. Despite searching the hotels website and Expedia's we were unaware of building works, even after e-mailing the hotel to ask for a late checkout due to a late flight home. Even this did not reassure us as there was no guarantee we would have somewhere to stay after the checkout if the hotel was busy.
So we arrived late in the afternoon to a nice rum punch. We were then shown to our room ,a new pod luxe room which initially looked great with its great view of petit Piton . The bathroom is great with space and an open shower, where the only drawback was the constant dripping when it rained on the last two days. The bed was lovely and large and storage ample. Ipod was waiting but interestingly no headphones so you both have to listen even at night. The complimentary nuts and chocaltes were a good touch and the day loungers were fine. But where were the Rabot rockers?? mentioned in the room details.
The restaurant served great food and drinks, and the day to day waiters/ waitresses were helpful and attentive. The pool is lovely.
There it stops for the PRO's.
The hotel is still a building site and everytime we visited the main hotel part we had to travel through the works, unfinished paths and stairs. On the first morning we were woken by hammering as they worked on the pods luxe only two down. Day two saw intermittant hammering and the noise of barking dogs. The boucan club bar was closed throughout our stay though staff popped down every few hours. The pool is lovely but overlooked by non hotel guests at lunch.
Activities seem plentiful but the bean to plate experience operates only on a Thursday. The map showing the walks is very inaccurate and dangerous and could get you lost if you do not have a guide. When it rained there is little to do except read. The cacao experience is overhighlighted and over rated .Why not have an area to show the process historically so one does not need the Thursday tour? The cooking is great but variety is lacking, anf forget the chocalate experience dessert as 2 parts are bitter and raw , 3 are just chocalates available in Uk shops for a quarter of the price leaving two mouthfuls not found elsewhere!! The food and cocktails are great and show what could be.
The staff in the restaurant and bar do try and help, but who was Chester? Who was the manager? I may be shy to come forward but in 3 days nobody came forward to ask us how things were. Why should i have to complain when there were only TWELVE guests! So was it worth the money? Not at £600/ night including meals. We visited Jalousie and Ladera and saw Jade mountain, which seem to offer better service for the money.
This could be a great Hotel but at present is not fit for purpose. I note another review still awaits vouchers for its inconvenience, but why at this price should we have to complain whilst on holiday. To see how it could be I suggest the manager visits Nisbet Plantation in Nevis. Forget the corporate theme until the hotel reaches the required standards for its price.m

Room Tip: Wait until its finished, then go for the right hand pod luxe.

Thanks very much for your nice comments about the quality of our food in this review and your other one under our Boucan Restaurant.
Although we have taken note of all your other comments, several of them do seem a bit on the harsh side to us. However we do accept that there are different subjective opinions about how we do things.

We stayed at the Hotel Chocolat in January the first couple into the Luxe Pods. On arrival we were asked to sit down and enjoy a welcome drink before being taken by Chester, the hotel Manager to our Luxe Pod. He was obviolusly very proud and excited to show us around our accommodation especially the huge shower plus a very fancy shower head it was something else! Wonderful and very comfy King sized bed with storage space at the foot to place any unwanted luggage - a great idea. The following morning we were asked if we had enjoyed the Luxe Pod experience and apart from a couple of very small niggles ie. shelf in the enormous shower for shampoo etc., and a seperate smaller mirror with some magnification for makeup or shaving. The room besides having the large, two basin bathroom, large bedroom you have a large patio with two day beds, fridge with drinks usual coffee/tea, bottled water and ice as well as yes Chocolate! along with fresh made biscuits and a selection of nuts daily. The vista when you pulled back the shutters and looked out onto the pitons was truely wonderful. This accommodation would not be suitable for the less able as there are a number of steps to negotiate. All staff happy to help and we very much appreciated everyones friendliness including the Estate Manager Phil and his wife Julie who tried to do as much as possible to make our stay an enjoyable one including taking us out in Phil's boat for the day picknick and drinks included we were truely spoilt. This couple went out of their way to chat to guests to make sure they were all having a good time. The food was brilliant but be careful we booked half board and that was sufficient, everything was delicious. If you go you must do the Bean to Bar experience to understand what Hotel Chocolat is about and what they are trying to achieve on the Island. We will return to see the finished masterpiece.

Room Tip: The luxe pods are more expensive but offer a fantastic view have their own patio with sun beds.

We stayed at the Hotel Chocolat St Lucia in January 2012 to celebrate our anniversary
We booked the new Pod Luxe Villa Rooms which were due to be completed 1st December.
I emailed in November and again mid December to check that the rooms would be ready and building work finished before our stay and was confirmed our room would be completed by our stay
We arrived at the hotel which was lovely and offered a welcome drink while we waited for the manager to come and see us. We were told that the Pod Luxe Villa rooms were not completed and not ready to be utilised so we were going to be staying in one of the Pod Rooms.
We were a bit upset at not having been informed before especially as I had emailed to double confirm it twice and we felt like it was a bit dishonest – but they promised to make our stay special for the occasion.
So we were taken to our room; it was lovely, done to a high specification, nice decor and generally a really nice room – our only concerns were the bed which was quite small for us ( that was one reason we had booked the new room with the King Bed) and the building work that was going on behind us was still very apparent and quite noisy.
After the first night – we hardly slept due to the bed size and were woken early by the loud noise of drilling from the builders – we weren’t too impressed...we complained to the manager and while a little defensive at times, he did offer to put one of the larger beds from the new room into our pod and also move us to a quieter room. This was all completed during the course of the day.
We were offered quite a lot of complimentary experiences during our stay for the inconvenience of our room not being ready and we enjoyed these very much. We had a massage by the masseur at the resort, we also had a boat tour on the hotel boat ( the highlight) we were out the whole day viewing the island, doing several stops for snorkelling or just wander around, it was a great way to see the Island and a fab day.
They also arranged a trip to the Volcano, Botanical gardens and waterfall which was a great trip. We weren’t too impressed with the driver Joseph – he was quite rude and ignored us when we said hello/ or asked questions, but the trip itself was definitely worth it. As was the bean to bar tour which is an interesting look at how the cocoa pods are grown and turned into the chocolate we know – you even get chance to plant your own tree and make your own chocolate – definitely worth doing.
The resort itself will be absolutely stunning once it is completed...the staff were great – really helpful, there is relaxed music playing all day and it is just a fantastic location overlooking the petit piton. The food is amazing – best food we had all holiday, although after 6 nights we were starting to find the menu a bit repetitive, we suggested to the manager that they might consider a daily special dish which changes each day to make it more exciting. But the quality of the food really could not be faulted. We ate lunch at the pool three times, and although the menu is fairly small, we both had a different lunch each time, and all of them were delicious. The pool area is really quite small but we were the only ones staying there so had it to ourselves which was lovely but it will definitely need to be extended to accommodate the new rooms.
The hotel also arranged a surprise private dinner by the pool for us, for our anniversary. This was a lovely idea and really special – especially because we didn’t know anything about it until we were shown to our table.
We did go the beach one day, the beach the resort uses is the Jalousie which about a 10 minute drive away (complimentary) – you arrive and the resort and a see lovely white bed looking sun beds. We sat down and one of the staff quickly ran over asking if we staying at the resort... we said no but we were from hotel chocolat – we were informed that the nice chairs are for hotel guests only and were directed to some shabby looking chairs right at the end of the beach, and told it was $20 for the pleasure!! We sat down for 15minutes and looked back at the lovely beds, there were only a few taken most were free – so my husband spoke to someone from the hotel and they allowed us to sit there. I think $20 is fair for the nice chairs but a bit of a liberty for uncomfortable, grubby chairs right at the end of the beach.
The manager Phil & Judy were friendly and said hello when we saw them around the resort and we were definitely compensated for the trouble of the rooms not being ready. When we checked out –we were told that we would be given a voucher for our next return (when hopefully the rooms will be ready) and told it would be emailed to us in the next few days which we were excited for as we would definitely return in the future when everything is completed...however unfortunately we have been home nearly a month now and still haven’t received anything.

Just returned from Hotel Chocolat and it was awesome. Ditto for everything that Julia 181 wrote. From the arrival at the airport to our sad good byes we were treated like family, royal family at that! We stayed in Luxe Pod 3 which was just finished and highly recommend it. Try all of the activities from the Gros Piton climb, day boat trip to the Tree to bar experience. they were all just perfect. The food was perfect! Breakfast was fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, fresh muffins and I could just keep going on! Lunch and dinner were awesome and I highly recommend the salad with white chocolate dressing, pork dinner, daily fish and the duck which I had 4 nights!!! Being hotel Chocolat the desserts were amazing. Everyone one them was different but very good and fun. Try them all! Jon the Exec.Chef did a great job and also ran the chocolate making class. Very creative menu with hints of chocolate throughout. The staff is as professional and pleasant as anywhere we have ever been. I cannot praise them enough, they will do anything for you with a smile! Chester the Manager was always there to check up on you and make sure everything was perfect. We would also like to mention Phil and Judy for their always making you feel like family attitude while running this business. My wife and I stayed 7 nights and it was very sad to leave this beautiful, friendly Hotel. We will be back!!!!
