“Great if you like ants”

We were appalled by this restaurant. We should have known when we walked in and there was no one there eating breakfast at 930 in the morning. The cream and sugar needed replaced after our first cup of coffee and when the waitress brought out new sugar, it was teeming with small ants(which subsequently got all over everything on the table). Even I know that anything sweet like sugar needs to be sealed well on a tropical island. When I politely returned the sugar to her and explained what the problem was, she said "OK" and walked away. We did get new sugar, but the breakfasts were undercooked and left much to be desired. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

The still beach resort is a 1-star resort with a 5 -star view. We occupied the middle room and had a wonderful view of the Pitons. Unfortunately there was a poop in the toilet when we checked in and the sliding door onto the shared balcony did not lock so there was no security! This motel (not resort) is not for the faint of heart. For that matter, the town of Soufriere takes some getting used to also. Our experience was that the locals stared at us as if we had walked off a spaceship. The grocery store in town only sold liquor and bad chocolate. We once spent an afternoon in town watching three stores in the town burn down. This was the entertainment. Our room neighbours also found the 'still' a little hard to handle and told us of their plan to move to Rodney Bay asap. Guess what? We borrowed their brochure and moved to Rodney Bay the next day. What a relief - the vacation was saved. Most resorts leave chocolate in the room...we got poop!

For a great dive vacation, I recommend The Still Plantation Beach Resort. A superb dive operation owned and operated by Chester Nathoniel that only enhances the whole diving experience, they set up the gear, load it on the boat, and clean it afterwards for you. The boats are small but serviceable and the reef is absolutely fabulous (protected in most areas) and I enjoyed some of the best diving I have ever done. No dive time constraints and great sites just moments away. Soufriere is a small fishing village which offers the bare necessities at the grocery stores, a 10 minute walk from resort, we supplemented our supplies packed from home but did find several little jewels for dinner, Captain Hook's, Le Haut, and the Hummingbird. Great little places where focus is on flavor and tastes and not on flashy and speedy service. All meals prepared upon request so remember the words "Island time" and double that. The Still Beach resort was indeed 5 minutes from beach so access is quick, the beach is small but functional and serves as the playground for locals on sundays and a catamaran hitching post for travelers taking advantage of the calm waters, which adds to the uniqueness of the experience. Resort offers kitchenettes with clean but functional rooms (AC in bedroom) and if you are there to dive you have hit the right place. Breakfast is offered, my favorite was the banana pancakes. Balconies offered the great opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy the view of the Pitons in the distance.

After a tortuous experience at Anse Chastanet (that's a whole other story) my husband and I decided to try some of the local restuarants. We should have known better when we arrived at The Still and we were the only people in the dining room. We ordered drinks and were taking video of the scenery when the waitress came back with a tray. She took off one of the drinks and did not realize that her tray was unbalanced; needless to say, a complete drink was spilt all over my husband and our video camera! Upsettingly, all of our honeymoon footage was on the tape that was inside the camera! The camera was broken and the tape was destroyed. The waitress was apologetic and David, the manager/ owner promised to compensate us for the repair of the camera. We truly believed that he would make good on his word and we trusted him to do the right thing. Upon return to the US, we had the camera fixed and we sent him a copy of the bill -- a total of $300. That was in August, 2003 and we have not heard a word from David since. We have called The Still many times to ask David when we could expect to be reimbursed. He usually refuses to come to the phone or gives us some excuse that business is slow (no wonder!) and that he'll put a check in the mail next week. After reading reviews of this establishment and the horrors that others have had to endure while at The Still, I realize that we should just cut our losses...

We arrived at 6:45 on Saturday night tired and hungry. The plantation restaurant was closed and we had to get back in the car (lucky we had one!) and go down to the beach resort restaurant, where we were the only customers the entire time we were there (I admit, the food was good). Some of the lights in the room didn't work. One of the windows in the (one) room that had A/C didn't close. There was no hot water.
The TV controller did not work. The decor was awful. The next morning we were told that we couldn't use the plantation restaurant for breakfast, we had to go back down to the beach. We argued and prevailed, but the restaurant was a disappointment as well. Again we were the only customers, the service was very slow, the blaring music was Country Western and wasn't changed despite our complaints, and the coffee we were served was a pot of hot water and packets of instant coffee! The swimming pool was dirty. We left after only one night.

We arrived with our 3 hot and sweaty kids at the Still Plantation and asked at Reception for directions to the pool. These were given, we rushed to our rooms and changed, and then headed to the water - to find that the pool had been drained! It was to be empty for the 2-week duration of our stay. We complained bitterly and were offered a significant discount which helped - if only as a contribution to the cost of renting a car, so we could get to beaches and other pools more easily - but it never fully compensated us for the lost ability to completely relax. On the first morning we had breakfast and I then paid cash for it. After, I realised that it had been included in our 'new' offer (and the 'old' offer, for that matter). I did nothing until we left, at which point I proposed deducting it from our bill - with the receipt as evidence. No way! The manager himself began to argue in earnest with me and he genuinely seemed unable to understand that we were due back some money. All in all, the Still Plantation is a mixed bunch. The views are nice, the breakfast is nice, the staff are friendly; but the 'whole' somehow doesn't work. we moved on for a 3rd week, downmarket at La Panache at Gros Islet, and upmarket at Windjammer Landing, and we enjoyed both of these much more than the Still. It must be said, though, Soufriere is absolutely lovely and the best region to stay in - I just wish I could have afforded the Jalousie Hilton!
