Owner description: Unique to the Rabot Estate, the Tree to Bar Experience is an exclusive opportunity for guests to get up close and personal with everything to do with growing cocoa and culminates with creating their own chocolate! Guests start off with a walk through the estate groves, selecting ripe cocoa pods to cut from the tree, and ends with a hands-on trip to the Boucan kitchens where our chef will help guests make their own chocolate bar from beans that they have roasted themselves. The tour includes all the stages in between – from the seedling nursery and fermenting room,to the sun-drying station, grinding, mixing and lots of tasting!

An excellent way to spend a morning (despite the arduous drive from Rodney Bay). Broadly speaking the programme is as follows:

1. Introduction to coco beans - turns out there are a lot of different tree varieties
2. Information about how it is is best grown, the use of other plants to aid production and the problem of rats
3. Harvesting some coco (hands on) - either manually of using the relevant tool
4. The process of getting the beans ready for production - you can see, smell and taste
5. Grafting (hands on) - explanation of the process then have a go
6. Chocolate making (hands on)

Hopefully this gives a good idea of what happens but what I cannot get across is how knowledgable and engaging Cuthbert is as a guide - he lives and breaths chocolate and the planation. Is energy and passion is infections. Highly recommended.

At the time of writing the tour is available on a Thursday or Friday and non-hotel residents are welcome although they do pay a little more.

“Day trip as part of spirit of carnival excursion”

We has the pleasure to attend the boucan restaurant as part of our day trip and it was one of the best meals on the island. We started by making our own chocolate, followed by a delicious meal which consisted of chocolate laced delicacies. The chocolate balsamic was subtle and in simply terms tasty as was the chocolate pesto, I opted for the chicken roti and was very pleased with my choice which was topped by my meringue piton on a sea of chocolate and banana chips dessert! Yum! We had amazing views and could see how luxurious it would be to stay for longer so would definitely recommend it to anyone going. Perfect trip for honeymooners

This was amazing, Cuthbert our guide was so knowledgeable about the cocoa production and when we got to graft our own cocoa plant he even let us name one of ours after my hubby's grandma who passed away last October,can't wait to go back and see if it's producing cocoa yet.We then got to actually make a bar of chocolate which was great ,definitely not to be missed .

“You have to do this....”

Even if you don't like chocolate..... this is great fun, the guide Cuthbert (Do you get me?) La Roque, is the most amazing character he should have his on TV show! You can tell he loves his Cocoa Trees and every single pod on each one!

His knowledge is vast but his care and love for the trees completely involves you in the plantations work. You get to plant a tree, and if you do the end part you get to make a bar of chocolate - It's not the greatest chocolate in the world mind, but you get the jist of it!

“Highlight of our trip and a must for chocoholics!”

This was by far one of the highlights of our recent trip to St. Lucia. We knew we wanted to do this before we arrived and so glad we did!

We did the Bean to Bar tour which focussed on understanding the cocoa pod and how to turn cocoa beans from nibs (crumbled) into chocolate! You get to taste your own chocolate all the way including the cocoa nibs! Both guides were awesome and really made the activity a great afternoon! We also got to taste a cocoa bean from inside a freshly opened cocoa pod which was sublime - something we were not expecting!

All in all an excellent experience for anyone who likes chocolate (who doesn't), in the lush environment of the Boucan Hotel (Hotel Choclat). Would like to mention here that the place set against the backdrop of one of the pitons so a great place to take photos!

Lunch was included and was very well crafted cleverly combining cocoa in all courses!
Well done to Cuthbert, Kurt and the entire team! Great memories and chocolate have been taken away from this day!
