Me, my husband Giulio and our 2 years old son Alessandro spent our Christmas Holidays in Santa Lucia at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation. This is a really unique and great place where to stay!

The Resort is in a Cacao Plantation and all the rooms are indipendent, characteristics and very romantic cottages within the plantation. Each room is unique (ours was African Tulip and I recommend it). If there is availability, try to book Angelina's Villa.

The staff is extremely kind, efficient and helpful. They are ready to help you at any time for any request (our baby broke his arm during the holiday and a person from the Staff took us to the Hospital and remained with us all the time we spent in the Hospital helping us for any issue).

The food at the Restaurant is delicious and breakfast is different every day and made up by fresh products coming form the plantation.

The swimming pool is beautiful: they are actually 3 communicating swimming pools built in the rock on 3 different floors and from there you can have an amazing view on the plantation and on the valley.

The location is great: 5 minutes car from the best beaches (Sugar Bay and Anse Chastanet) and 5 minutes car form Soufrier (a small town where you can find shops, restaurants and supermarkets).

I recommend to book a guided tour of the plantation. We did it and we enjoyed it a lot!

So, I really recommend Fond Doux Plantation and I want to thank again the owners Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne and all the Staff for all they did to make our stay memorable!

Room Tip: Try to book Angelina's Cottage

We had a wonderful family reunion at the Fond Doux over the Christmas break. Our first cottage experience was the lipstick flower “welcome” written on our bed, very nice. Prior to the trip I was worried about the lack of air conditioning in the rooms. My husband and I learnt on the first night that we wouldn’t be too warm. We were in the Hillside Coconut and had a beautiful view of the valley with great evening breezes. The temperature dropped in the evenings (who knew 24C for a night time temperature could be so comfortable!). The night sounds were incredible - tree frogs galore. A much nicer sound than air conditioning! The evening bat displays were also awesome.

In order to have such beautiful views and nice breezes, the 63 steps from the restaurant to the cottage were definitely worth it. Our motto: Stop and smell the flowers! There are some beautiful plants and flowers along the path up to the cottage, so no huffing and puffing required.

Staff at the plantation were very friendly and courteous. I loved that for every “Thank You” I gave, I got a “You’re Welcome” in return. Breakfasts were great – freshly made to order omelets, freshly squeezed fruit juice, and of course, cocoa tea. Yummy! The French influence was definitely a treat at lunch – the restaurant makes delicious baguettes for their sandwiches. Dinners were great too! The owners poolside meet and greet was a great way to meet not only Lyton and Eroline, but the other guests as well. Of course the great snacks and rum punches they served didn’t hurt.

The rainforest walks from the plantation are well worth the time. The fabulous birds, trees and flowers, and the great “backside” views of Petit Piton and Sugar beach you get to see are a treat.

Our only recommendation would be to know the ‘flat’ rates for the taxi before you start your adventures. We found out part way through our trip that a round trip taxi to anywhere between the hotel and Soufriere (15 minutes away) was $122 for the 11 of us. Once we expressed our discontent with such a high rate (it was based on a per person rate), we received a much more reasonable rate for all the taxis – even those we had previously taken. We really appreciated that the Fond Doux staff were willing to re-negotiate these rates.

Our thanks to all the great staff at Fond Doux, for making this a very enjoyable trip experience.

THANK YOU FOR THE PLEASANT FAMILY REVIEW!!
Dear Maggie M,
The extremely positive review of your recent visit to Fond Doux Holiday Plantation is truly rewarding to all of those who helped make it happen. It is always rewarding to receive a guest review that is so well written and captures the atmosphere of Fond Doux Holiday Plantation so accurately. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with the audience of this website, as well as pointing out all the features the resort has which made your holiday with us so memorable. It was indeed a pleasure hosting the Marsland clan at our plantation paradise.
Fond Doux is indeed at high elevation which introduces glorious views and temperatures. We are happy to know that you were comfortable with the temperatures and the nightly chorus from Mother Nature. We are happy to read that you had a wonderful family reunion at Fond Doux over the Christmas break - that is excellent reinforcement for our team and all the other superlatives that you pointed out including our restaurant offerings, rainforest walks, friendly staff and the meet and greet - which creates an opportunity for us to meet with the families and introduce the Fond Doux family.
We have adjusted our rates to accommodate large groups. Most reviewers on this website have confirmed that our taxi rates are extremely reasonable compared to the other nearby resorts – all in all we are indeed happy that this was addressed immediately.

Once again thank you for choosing Fond Doux Holiday Plantation from all the hotels available in the Caribbean to celebrate your family reunion. Best Greetings for a speedy recovery to your mom and we do look forward to welcoming the extended Marsland clan back to paradise. We are sincerely thankful for your support and enthusiastic endorsement of the resort, and are eager to see you again.

Best Regards,
Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne

We had some mixed views on this plantation. On the plus side, the hotel is family owned and personal, the plantation is absolutely beautiful with a rich history, and it feels like a much more authentic local experience than staying at a commercial resort right on the beach. The hotel is a lovely secluded local place with just a handful of guests (only 12 cottages there now) and there is a fun friendly vibe. We had some really tasty home-cooked meals and met some great staff (the drivers in particular) who were very helpful. The hotel also had a number of special poolside drinks and parties with local music, which made for some wonderful evenings.

On the other hand, the relaxed atmosphere also has its drawbacks. Our cottage (Treehouse), while being very secluded with beautiful views of the canopy and a plunge pool, had some problems, namely no roof on the bathroom so we could hear each other in the loo at all times! In addition most of the living space is outside - though the deck is lovely, the fridge and coffee pot (without proper coffee) are out there and lizards and birds could get into all the sugar and coffee that we bought (even though we tried to hide it from them)! To be honest, the room wasn't particularly clean (hair clogs in the shower greeted us on day one), the phone kept ringing accidentally from poor wiring, and the mosquitoes are brutal, though there are no mosquito coils or spray to use. Another drawback was some lack of organization - as others have commented, it wasn't clear to us who manages the restaurant or the reception, and we had mixed experiences with service at both of those at times (a little bit too relaxed and disorganized). Finally, while the cost may be low compared to other hotels in St Lucia, I don't think there are really enough amenities or nice enough rooms to justify the price.

Another thing to be aware of is that while there is a daily shuttle to the beach, once you get to the beach the options may feel a little limited. At Sugar Beach and the two nearest beaches, non-residents of the local hotel can't rent the beautiful chairs taking up most of the beachfront. You would be stuck in less prime locations renting cheaper beach chairs, plopping on a towel among the nice chairs, or in the "free" area on broken plastic chairs and pebbles instead of sand. Even when the hotel's chairs can be rented (we could never rent them), it's up to $50 per person. This lack of good beach access was an unexpected drawback which you might not know from the hotel website.

So, while I love the idea of staying at a place like this which is family-run, gorgeous, and very unique, there is a lot of potential which hasn't yet been realized. If that potential was realized, I would definitely consider going back.

Room Tip: I think Papaya is probably one of the best rooms, though I didn't get to stay there. Treehouse h...

RELAXED AND RUSTIC GETAWAY REVIEW MOST APPRECIATED!!
Dear J_R_2010Tokyo,
Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to post your valuable feedback following your recent stay. We do value honest feedback from our guests as this helps us improve in the areas where we may have fallen short.
After all, how else would we know what our guests are truly experiencing, and more importantly, what they would like to experience? You have made a number of very positive and helpful remarks in your posting, confirming that the plantation is indeed beautiful with a rich history, that it offers an authentic local experience, that this is a secluded local place, fun friendly vibe, tasty home- cooked meals, wonderful evenings with live entertainment and the great staff.
We are always deeply concerned when we receive negative reports and do our utmost to listen to the complaints and do what we can to rectify lapses in the service standard and to ensure that there is no recurrence.

We would also like to comment on certain of your observations to ensure that the general public who read and take these reviews into account are receiving accurate information about the resort and what it offers.
• The missing fourth wall design has become one of the latest trends in architectural design in the Caribbean, there are well known five star resorts offering this type of accommodations, one with nature which embodies the sustainable green globe concept. We wish to clarify that it is only the Tree House cottage which has this design for the living room.
• The constant ringing of your phone was not as a result of poor wiring. The severe weather conditions which affected the Caribbean islands on Christmas Eve 2013, caused disruptions to our telephone system. Our Cable company has worked tirelessly to restore services and we are pleased to say that the problems with the telephone lines have now been rectified.

• Over the past two weeks the Caribbean islands experienced unusual weather changes and the torrential rains resulted in more than usual mosquitoes. It is for this reason Fond Doux Holiday Plantation has chosen a more sustainable and green philosophy. All the windows and doors in our cottages have screens and they are all equipped with mosquito nets. Mosquito coils and citronella candles are also available at reception. In future we will ensure that all cottages are equipped with these.

• We do not believe in a regimented regime of servility but friendliness with service, therefore we apologize for any lapses in service. Staff training is underway to ensure that our service is relaxed but organized and consistent.

• Most of the hotels in Soufriere are located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Pitons” hence their room rates will be slightly higher than the rest of the other resorts around St. Lucia. Just to clarify we do not have rooms, we have twelve individual villas which offers complete privacy. We are extremely surprised about your comments regarding insufficient amenities; we are pleased to confirm that we do have three swimming pools, spa, boutique, three restaurants, walking and hiking trails, gardens, complimentary breakfast, complimentary beach shuttle, complimentary Wi-Fi, complimentary plantation tour and room amenities such as (shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, shower caps, tissue, earplugs and tea /coffee supplies, coffee machine, hairdryer, fridge, safe, telephone, iron and ironing board). Complimentary fresh flowers and fruits are also provided in the cottages daily.

• All the beaches in St. Lucia are public, there is no free area. It is quite obvious that if one is not a paying guest at the beach resorts then the equipments would have to be rented. We have no jurisdiction over broken beach chairs and reports such as these should be referred to the resort in question.
We would love to welcome any other positive recommendations to fulfill our potential and once again we apologize for any lapses. We trust that the issues you experienced have not changed your perception of our resort and that you will consider a return visit to Fond Doux Holiday Plantation at some point in the future. Thank you for taking the time to write a fair and honest review of your experience at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation.
Best Regards,
Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne

My two week stay at Fond doux resort was an absolutely heavenly experience. I could not have picked a better vacation site which truly seemed like a taste of heaven. From the breath-taking wonder of the setting in lush tropical foliage to the quality of service and healthy, tasty meals served, I could not have asked for more.
I was particulary impressed with the friendly, caring attitude of all staff who seemed ever willing to go the extra mile to ensure our stay was a memorable one. During our stay, the Island was struck by a tropical trough which produced over ten inches of rain within hours causing road closures and cancellation of Church services on Christmas Eve night in this mainly Christian community; yet even in the midst of the torrential rains, management and staff appeared at guest doors delivering dinner and assuring our comfort. This spoke volumes to myself and my husband of compassion and tenacity in action. I shall never forget those moments and will forever treasure the sprinklings of such blessings which were experienced from time to time at Fond doux. As early retirees, we have travelled extensively and recognize quality service and value for the money. Our vacation at Fond douz plantation thus far is superior and stands as our best. We selected the beautiful Cinnamon Cottage which is a short walk from the Restaurant and allows a breathtaking view of the many, many varieties of flowers and fruit trees along the path. The Friday nights presentation of cuisine and local live entertainment and get-together for guests was in our opinion outstanding. Factor in the proximity of Fond doux to the world's only drive-in volcano and waterfalls and you'll sense our elation. As historians, we were impressed with staff knowledge on the history of this resort and the courteous and professional interaction of the Owners with their guests. We definitely recommend this resort and are already making plans for a return visit later this year with other family members and friends.

Room Tip: Close to Restaurant at ground elevation.

THANK YOU FOR THE INCREDIBLE REVIEW!!!
Dear Freda L,
We greatly appreciate your efforts in reporting the satisfaction you experienced during your stay at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation. It is not often that we receive a review from a guest who has experienced severe weather conditions on their vacation. Judging by your favorable comments, our staff did about as good a job as they could to make a memorable experience out of it all. All in all, while a devastating experience for the island of St. Lucia, Fond Doux Holiday Plantation fared relatively well.
Positive comments about all elements of the resort, including the cottage, food, ambience, flowers, fruits, staff, entertainment and the Managers Cocktail are all received with the highest gratitude. The Fond Doux Holiday Plantation team is always happy to receive positive and encouraging feedback, as we go above and beyond to ensure that we not only meet but exceed their overall expectations and it s quite evident we were able to do just that. It is guests like you who truly appreciate what we do here and so our efforts are not unnoticed.
We wish to thank all our guests who were on property at the time for their patience and co-operation. In the same way you have thanked us for making your stay so wonderful, we too thank you for sharing your experiences so enthusiastically with the travelling public, providing an accurate depiction of what to expect as a guest of Fond Doux Holiday Plantation. Thank you for your commitment to return and we look forward to welcoming you back to paradise.

Our stay at Fond Doux was a mixed experience. On the one hand there were quite a few issues, on the other, there were a few members of staff that we would highly commend for their customer service, efficiency and friendliness, (Marsha and Catrina).

However, our first few days at the plantation were not happy ones. We felt very uncomfortable with the general attitude of the staff - in particular the restaurant and bar staff. If we requested a different table, or God forbid, a cocktail with Lunch, we were met with looks of disbelief and an attitude that said, " Really? Oh, that's a lot to ask." Surly is a good description for 70% of the
staff.

What to do? Should we have complained? Normally I would have, but it was difficult to gauge
who was in charge. Who was the restaurant manager? In fact, there were so many members of staff who all seemed to be friends that I had no idea whether a complaint would just alienate
everyone, then we'd feel even more uncomfortable for the rest of our stay.

As the days went by, the staff seemed to warm to us, and there's no denying that quite a few of them are a real credit to the plantation - very friendly. Am I contradicting myself? Well, yes really. That's what it was like. My over-all opinion is that the plantation doesn't focus on staff training,
there seems to be no over-arching or uniform culture of customer service or management structure. Had this been in place, along side the very laid back and friendly nature of the staff, it would have enhanced our experience considerably.

The plantation itself is a wonderful place. Loads of potential. Location is fabulous, providing you're happy to be a 10minute drive from the beach. Seeing all of the wonderful vegetation and flowers, and all the produce growing outside your cottage is great. It is wonderfully rustic and has
an authentic feel. It requires a bit of sprucing up in places; rustic doesn't have to mean rough around the edges.

The first part of our stay we spent in the papaya cottage. Very private and romantic, you are not overlooked by any-one. We loved the outside shower and the very comfortable four poster bed. The balcony had a comfortable day-bed and we were right next to the lovely pool area. There's a plunge-pool on your balcony and 2 sun loungers, (one of which was broken...first complaint...)

There's a fridge, kettle and filter coffee machine provided in the room. However, there was no ground coffee provided, so I requested some, and so began our first battle. My goodness, who'd
have thought it could be so difficult! It took several requests of 3 different people and 3 days to get the coffee...... asking for fresh milk at the restaurant to take back for our coffee was one of
those "Really?" moments......

We were sad to leave Papaya cottage, but had previously arranged to stay in Avacado cottage for our last 3 nights. It's lower down the plantation; we prefered the hilltop location of Papaya. Avocado has 2 bedrooms, open-plan kitchen and lounge. There is obviously no view or chance of sun-bathing on the deck as the vegetation blocks out the sun. Not a problem, just a contrast to the Hilltop cottages. There was a small pane of glass missing from one of the shower-room windows and one of the rocking chairs was broken. Another complaint...This was all taken care
of quickly by Katrina.

Generally, there are no comfortable guest seating areas on the plantation. No comfortable
seating area at the bar either - they do need some sofas there so you can sip cocktails or coffee after dinner. We'd have spent more time at the pool area sipping cocktails, but to be honest, we were initially intimidated by the staff that we didn't want to 'inconvenience' them by asking for pool service.

The chairs provided for dining are the most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat on! They're like something from a 1970s Italian Trattoria down the Old Kent Road! The legs protrude from the seat, wedging themselves into the side of you thighs. Each meal-time I had to find 2 cushions to soften the experience.

The food- brace yourself. Breakfast was very poor. The first morning they had porridge and yoghurt, but they never appeared again. Eggs are cooked to order, which is great. (now this is where you need to speak up and ask for what you want, because the staff are really hit and miss! Marsha was the exception).

Lunch, mostly awful. Dinner, mostly awful. One night there was a lamb special which was tasty. Lobster another night which I enjoyed. By the end of our stay we decided to eat elsewhere. The bayside at Sugar beach provided very tasty food, although pricey. We also ate at Bouchan and The Great room at Sugar beach resort, (very, very pricey but worth it).

Over-all we will not be returning to Fond Doux. They need to rethink their approach to the whole venture. What a shame, because the potential is stunning.

P.S they really need a new Bar-man, he was surly and very slow. I had to ask him if he enjoyed his job - his answer was a delayed and unconvincing "yes". When one of the ladies mixed our drinks they were 100% better!

Room Tip: Request a hilltop cottage - you'll love it.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!!!

Dear Ljatellesmere,

We acknowledge your review of your recent stay at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation and are genuinely disappointed that you did not have the total experience of your expectations. Our apologies that you felt compelled to author the review which you have, as this is far from the standard that the majority of guests who visit Fond Doux Holiday Plantation report on this website on a very consistent and regular basis It is realized that we simply cannot please everyone - nor is Fond Doux Holiday Plantation or even St. Lucia for everyone – as has been stated by many content reviewers on this website in the past. We accept that everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what makes a good holiday however; we feel that it is necessary and worthwhile to clarify the points highlighted in your review.

• We wish to express that we are truly appreciative of your positive comments regarding some aspects of the plantation such as the location, vegetation, flowers, estate produce and the cottages.

• We were extremely surprised and confused after reading your comments about the staff. Earlier in your review you mentioned that you felt “uncomfortable with the general attitude of the staff” however, in your fourth paragraph you then proceeded to commend the staff on their warmth and friendliness. This is quite a contradiction - thank you for clarifying this in your review. It is highly unusual for us to receive negative comments such as yours and generally our guests, irrespective of their reasons for travelling, give our management team and staff high praise. We do however wish to apologize for any lapses in the service that you received from our team.

• We are blessed with a plantation and so there are numerous sitting areas such as the lounge area in the Jardin Cacao Restaurant, garden chairs in the courtyard, the pool area and the verandah of the cottages. As a green Globe certified property, part of our efforts is to support the social and cultural developments in Soufriere and St. Lucia hence we have been working along with local craftsmen who specialize in local chairs, tables, beds, etc. We do understand that it is difficult to suit everyone’s taste and comfort however; we are in the process of increasing the proportions on our dining chairs.

• We are confident that had you brought the issues highlighted in your review to our attention, we could have resolved many of your concerns. It is clearly not what we had hoped for or expected, as there was absolutely no indication of any dissatisfaction throughout your stay. We continually conduct staff training and having discussed your comments in detail, additional training efforts are being focused on service standards.

We are always deeply concerned when we receive negative reports and do our best to listen to any complaints and do whatever we can to rectify any lapses in service in order to ensure that this does not happen again.
Thank you for staying with us and hopefully you will give us another chance to prove that we can offer the “great holiday stay” which you have identified that we have the potential to provide. After all, the great majority of our guests do have a wonderful experience, and it is likely for this reason you chose to come to Fond Doux Holiday Plantation to begin with.

Best Regards,
Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne

I don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said. We spent 6 divine days and nights in this slice of paradise. Everything was divine...from the staff, the food, the room, the grounds. It was totally relaxing, exactly what we needed. I was initially concerned about not being right on the beach, being a life-long "beach bum", but after one night, I didn't mind at all. The rain forest setting is so unique, lush, and beautiful. There is a daily free shuttle to Sugar Beach. From there, we were able to travel by boat to a few other more secluded beaches. Anse Chasanet and Anse Mamin provided exactly the postcard perfect beach experience we expected in St. Lucia.
We were on an all-inclusive plan and the food didn't disappoint. My husband enjoyed seafood daily and was impressed with each selection. There was good variety and we enjoyed the local choices: amazing fresh fruit and juice, morning "bake", and the cocktails! I wish I had gotten the recipe for the Coconut Punch I enjoyed every evening!
The staff was welcoming, attentive, friendly, and the best of any place we have ever stayed. Fresh flowers are everywhere...I was constantly checking to see if they were real. We planned something each day...a hike, a beach day, snorkeling;etc. in the afternoons, we relaxed by the awesome pool before dinner. We originally booked the Cinnamon cottage, but were moved to one of the hilltop rooms (Guava) upon arrival. Not sure why, but we loved the change...the climb was worth it for the serenity and views.

I would love to return to Fond Doux if we ever get the opportunity.
