We are thrilled that Audley Travel (the amazing Kate Herman) recommended this resort for our honeymoon. We requested nature, mountains, sea, rainforest, beautiful views, delicious local cuisine, safety, romance and Wi-Fi and Fond Doux ticked every single box.

Our honeymoon cottage Papaya had glorious views of palm trees, a refreshing private plunge pool (cleaned daily), sofa and loungers on the veranda, a comfortable king size bed with mosquito drapes, a romantic outdoor rainforest shower (see photos) and tropical flowers in vases. The cottage was immaculate and cleaned daily, and had a bowl of fresh fruit from the plantation as well as a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities, a hairdryer and sufficient plug sockets (UK and US) for charging your phone/camera. There are also plenty of cupboards and drawers as well as the wardrobe. The cottage is open-aired with mosquito nets over the windows and doors so you will hear the magical chorus of the rainforest at night. They do provide earplugs but we found we got used to the sounds quite quickly (and missed them once back home). In line with the eco-friendly nature of the resort there is no air conditioning, but there is a large ceiling fan (and the plunge pool is nice and cool). There is a fresh waster available next to the two communal swimming pools so you can refill your 2L bottle and keep it in your fridge.

This historic plantation is the most beautiful place either of us have ever stayed. Nature photography is my hobby and I was blown away by how many lovely creatures I got to photograph (hummingbirds, other birds, geckos, anoles and caterpillars to name but a few). The tropical flowers are divine and vibrant and everywhere you go there are all colours of geckos. Flowers you can expect to see include torch lily, orchids, red ginger, shinil, peace lily, crab claw, begonia and bird of paradise. Trees include mango, coconut, cacao, soursop, cinnamon, papaya, rubber and many more (most are labelled for identification).

For those wary of insects we hardly saw any creepy crawlies inside the cottage, just the occasional small ants outside. We also saw no mosquitos but this could have been due to the drought. The only creatures we saw inside our cottage and the outdoor shower were the geckos but they keep a respectful distance! We did see a spider eating wasp kill a tarantula out in the rainforest but such sightings are rare (we didn't mind as although it was terrifying, we felt like David Attenborough!).

The plantation tour is free if you are staying at Fond Doux - our guide Shyne was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us titbits of information about the history of the plantation (Mimosa plant - eek), the processing of the cacao beans (you get to taste them) and the medicinal use of numerous plants and trees (and we tasted edible begonia). The trail ends in the little gift shop. Not only can you buy chocolate made from the plantations cacao beans, but there are other souvenirs, as well as snacks, drinks and emergency provisions such as toothpaste. They also sell bags, clothing and flip flops. They accept GBP, ECD and USD currency.

There are several trails around the plantation so we often went for a wander before breakfast (served from 7.30am). The breakfast is a buffet arrangement with options changing daily. Fresh juice, milkshakes, tea, coffee, tropical fruit, cereal, yogurt, bread, cake and eggs were always available, plus items such as pancakes, bacon-wrapped plantain and French toast. The breakfast restaurant is sheltered but open aired and the lesser Antillean bullfinches will happily hop about the table pinching crumbs of cake and a sip of tamarind juice if you let them! Shout out to Antonio who greeted us with charm and friendliness each day and told us a useful tip about collecting beach towels from the shop before we headed to the beach.

On that note there is a daily shuttle bus (free of charge) to Sugar Beach/Jalousie Bay at 10am with return options at 2pm or 4pm (thank you Dennis) - it's not recommended that you attempt walking to the sea as it is very hilly and people drive fast! There are swish sunbeds available to rent as well as basic free sunbeds, with plenty of refreshments and a restroom.

Fond Doux is ideally situated to see several sights from. The Tet Paul nature trail is close by (a steep hilly walk from Fond Doux - we'd recommend a taxi ride), as are the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, Sulphur Springs and the Boucan Hotel Chocolat restaurant. However, we could have happily seen enough just on the Fond Doux plantation. It has its own nature trail hike named after the owners (Lamontagne) which is a little challenging (using vines to clamber up rocks at one point) but there is a glorious view of Petit Piton and the Caribbean sea at the top! We wandered back at dusk and saw fireflies - magical.

I have reviewed Bamboo restaurant separately - we enjoyed the variety of local cuisine (half board included breakfast and dinner, plus a cocktail each) and found the staff both friendly and accommodating. We miss Lecia and her lethal cocktails and fabulous sense of humour! We got to meet the owners Eroline and Lyton briefly - I would like to have a longer natter with them next time!

We are already saving up to return to this paradise.

Room Tip: Some cottages require a steeper climb to access than others. Papaya was a honeymoon cottage up a lot of steps but worth it for the view.

The staff was wonderful and welcomed everyone with open arms. Each cottage was separated from each other with beautiful views. The dinners were delicious and had a great time on Tuesday night when they held a Happy Hour for all guests to meet each other. Watch out for the Rum punch because they were great.

We decided to have our location wedding in St Lucia and Fond Doux plantation was a fantastic option that we saw online, we read all of the reviews from travellers and decided that Fond Doux would be the perfect looking complex for us, obviously deciding on a wedding venue is a decision you don't come to lightly and thankfully Fond Doux met and exceeded all of our wishes for our big day. The organisation between ourselves and Fond Doux was smooth and seemless with every email responded to within 48 hours but usually within 24 hours. First it was Indira who organised things for us and then Karan Emmanuel took over and she was not just good but absolutely brilliant in organising everything we wished for, it was a very stress free wedding organisation due to this fantastic communication we enjoyed.

We arrived at Fond Doux on the 7th May and were met by many of the employees of Fond Doux who couldn't do enough for us, the staff knew all of the names of our guests by the second day and all of Fond Doux staff were always happy and smiling and couldn't do enough for you. The owners Eroline and Lyton were very hospitable and would make great efforts to talk to us at each opportunity and really made the effort to make us all feel at home.

We had a wedding meeting to iron out any remaining points for the wedding which really put myself and Jennifer at even more ease than we already were, we originally wished to be married on the beach but when we saw the grounds of Fond Doux and its beautiful lush tropical gardens and gazebo area we wanted to change our minds and get married on the plantation, this was no worries for Karan and the staff of Fond Doux and what a great decision it was, the wedding day was perfect and went without any hitches, not even a tiny thing wasn't perfect, the day was amazing and for that we will be forever grateful for all at Fond Doux

The cottages were amazing and just as advertised, eco friendly, rustic, spacious and secluded. We stayed in the Hilltop Mango which had a fantastic view and it's own plunge pool. The pool was great fun which all of our party enjoyed spending time around. The breakfast and restaurant offerings were all of a good standard and the plantation tour was very interesting and a must do. We would like to thank all of the people who work at Fond Doux for making our wedding so memorable and perfect. Karan , Indira, Eroline and Lyton, Teddy, Katrina, Regina, Skeeta, Dennis and Billia Gregor, Leonita, Antonio, Clinton and many more thank you so much for all you did for us

Fond Doux is not be missed if you are thinking of holidaying in St Lucia

We can't wait return

My wife and I choose to stay a few nights here after staying at Sandals, which is great but much more commercial. We are really glad we booked the plantation because it showed us the more natural side of the island. It's very close to the Pitons, and there is an amazing hiking trail nearby that takes you to a breathtaking view of the Pitons. The plantation itself is mainly for cacao, but they also grow all kinds of other things, such as delicious mango, coconut, and banana. And there are even trees like cinnamon, almond, avocado, and nutmeg, amongst many others. They grow herbs as well, and use all of these things in their food that they serve at the restaurant. Fresh juice every morning, one day mango, the next lime, etc. Clinton greeted us and took us to the famous Angelina villa. We really liked him. A very laid back and cool dude. All of the staff was very nice. Sugar beach is close by, which has excellent snorkeling, and there is a zipline nearby as well. The rooms have no A.C., but the breeze was nice and I'm glad we experienced it. It reminded me of our cabin in Michigan when I was just a boy. We would not have missed this for anything!

Room Tip: The Angelina was amazing. Just look at pictures of it online. It's the only villa there like it. It's over 200 yrs old, and it was the first villa on the plantation, rescued from destruction, brought to the plantation and rebuilt. Simply amazing.

Thank you for your amazing review!

Dear Caz2010watch,

Thank you for taking time to comment on your Fond Doux experience. As the title of your review states, Fond Doux is indeed naturally beautiful.

The strategic location of our resort makes a stay at Fond Doux even more exciting as you enjoy the privacy and tranquility that our rainforest hideaway offers. We are also conveniently located in close proximity to all of the site seeing locations in the Soufriere area.

We are happy that you enjoyed our resort and everything that we offered. Your comments will be shared with Clinton. This will definitely motivate him in his quest of delivering excellent customer service.

Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and the rest of the Trip Advisor community. I am sure your review will help assist other travelers when planning their own vacation. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Best Regards,

From the moment we arrived at Fond Doux we felt like we were the most important guests there. Every member of the staff takes the time to introduce themselves, to find out your name, and to hear about you and your trip. Then there are the grounds and cottages. It is breathtakingly beautiful with every tropical plant and flower imaginable. We stayed in the 2 bedroom Avocado cottage which is set back all alone on a little hill surrounded by flowers and plants. Our cottage was filled with beautiful flower bouquets and flowers decorating the towels. The kitchen is stocked well enough for light cooking, but the restaurant on the grounds is excellent. There are birds flitting around and little lizards lounging on the porch. We enjoyed watching for the beautiful hummingbirds sipping from the flowers. At night the tree frogs sang us to sleep.

This is a working cocoa plantation and they also grow many types of other fruits. Shyne took us on a fabulous walking tour of the grounds and explained the cocoa processing. He even demonstrated the cocoa bean polishing. We got a great video of that.

The food at Fond Doux was also over the top. They grow many of the ingredients right on the grounds and everything we tried was fresh and exploding with flavors. The complimentary breakfast was filling and delicious. They served local dishes such as fish tarts, fish cakes and floats- fried breads. At dinner we tried some other local dishes at the encouragement of our waitress Lecia. She never steered us wrong. Everything was delicious!!

We also enjoyed the beautiful 3 tiered swimming pool. It was quiet and relaxing.

The cottages are open air, but you can open doors and windows at night to let in the breezes. The beds have mosquito netting, but we never had a problem with bugs. This is the most enchanting place we have ever stayed. We hope to go again.

It is a perfect wedding or honeymoon spot!!!
