My husband and I vacationed at Sonesta Great Bay in St. Maarten for our honeymoon. We were immediately impressed by the quick trip (by taxi) from the airport to the resort . At check-in, Ms. Vicki was more than accommodating and friendly. We stayed in one of the "apartment" rooms which had an awesome terrace that overlooked the ocean. We were stunned by the beauty of the island and the value of the room we received. The following morning, Denroy (the activities supervisor) greeted us as though we were friends. Denroy spoke with us and checked in with us throughout the entire trip, making us feel welcome and like we had a local friend. His water aerobics class, bingo, and other activities also kept us very busy! Curtis, the friendly bartender, was not only great at making drinks (ask for his mojito), but he was also pleasant to converse with. St. Maarten truly is the friendly island, and the staff at Sonesta Great Bay exemplifies this. We cannot wait to come back!

This is not my first visit to Great Bay and not my first review but I have to say I am very impressed with the improvements that the GM, Karl Bourne has made in the resort so far. The food is the best its been in a long time, the quality and selection are wonderful, so many choices, I was never bored on my 2 week visit. Virginia, Dawn, Florida, Stanley, June, Rufini and Johnathan always greeted me and my group with a warm welcome each day and I was so happy to see that Marcia has been made one of the new Butlers at Great Bay. She has always impressed me as a professional, approachable person and well suited to this role. Of course, Michael and Maritza are the stars of the bar, but Destine, Jose and the new man Curtis are all very knowledgeable and creative when it comes to making drinks.
They are currently renovating the rooms and the improvements are bright and cheery. The cleaning staff are wonderful and helpful and very accomodating. Vicky is the perfect person for the reception area, and I respect her cheerful and helpful manner.
There have been improvements in the Entertainment as well, something every night, which is nice and the activities staff, Maria, David and Micheal are wonderful. I love Great Bay for its proximity to Philipsburg, the breath-taking views, but especially the wonderful staff which always make me and my friends feel special. Thank you for a wonderful visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 4th floor, wonderful views. Pay extra for oceanview, it is worth it.

This was our first visit, we were very impressed by the friendly and attentive staff from the GM Carl, to everyone who served us, especially Patricia. We arrived on October 31st, 2013 for a week to a mostly renovated hotel. This resort has a large number of returning guests. The food was good with variety, and the resort was quiet and close to town and duty free shopping.
We had a 4th floor room with a mountain view and enjoyed looking at goats maneuvering along the cliffs. Although there was activities at the resort we missed them during the day as we were out exploring and shopping. We did enjoy some of the nightly bands, especially the Latin music. From the common rooms and restaurants we could see the cruise ships arrive daily and leave at night. We enjoyed visiting the sister resort and also seeing the planes land and take off. The island is very small so we were disappointed at the taxi fare for a tour( more than twice the cost of a rental car for a day).

My husband & I travel every year with our group of friends. This yr we were 34! We were a little sceptical as we had read prior reviews downgrading the resort. I don't know what resort "those" people were complaining about ie: food/rooms, etc... but let me tell you they were soooo wrong. We're seasoned travellers & have been to 3 star Cuban-run resorts and to 5 star resorts in other parts of the Caribbean (Antigua,Bahamas, Barbados, D.R etc.) & this place is in our top 2! We had an oceanview room-- yes I heard the Mountain-views were not as good but our bed was super comfortable and the pillows were plump. So check off "great nights sleep"! Rooms were always clean & they even came by to spray for mosquitoes. (Its the Caribbean, people!!) As per the food & variety-- again, the negative reviewers were wrong. Yes, there was only 1 a-la-carte restaurant open but you could order a different plate every night if you liked or go to the buffet were there was a theme night to feast on. I loved the fresh Mahi-mahi! Try it! With a group of 34 people, you'd think we'd have a lot to complain about but not 1 word came out about our experience there. We're planning a return next yr so look out fellow travellers, we tend to let loose! Now, to the wonderful staffers who made us welcomed-- and took care of our every needs, I thank you ALL! Starting from my "Good Sister" June, who's warm welcome greeted us upon our arrival at the buffet for our 1st luncheon, to the last goodbyes from the staff, we Canadians thank you! To our sweet Kim at the poolbar, Claudine who put up with us always with a smile and to Michael at the bar at night who made us great Brandy Alexanders, you all were awesome! Chantal & Denroy: you two were terrific and your shows/activities were a lot fun. You did a wonderful job in keeping both young & old entertained. And kudos go out to the Management staff who always greeted us & asked how the meal(s) were. You can see by my review that our group could not understand why "others" posted negative reviews. Your entire staff were very professional and courteous and the meals were delicious. St. Maarten IS the friendly island!
As per the island, it suited all our needs; walking distance to some major shopping and sights and great tours available. Our group booked with Bluebeard charters and were whisked off to Anguilla & then to Bankie Banx's famous beach bar. We felt like castaways as the beach in Rendez-Vous Bay was deserted and with a few other people at Bankie's, it was just our group. Bankie got up & played for us! What a treat. Only regret, the water was too rough for snorkelling as my husband & I were anxious to experience this famous area snorkelling. Oh well... there's always next year!
We didn't have much of a touring opportunity in St. Martin on our day trip there but got to see the planes landing on Maho beach (unreal!). I'd advise to take a day or 2 to go to St. Martin to really experience this part of the island & yes, they take U.S. dollars on the french side. Orient beach was nice but wayyyy to overcrowded and we did not like the constant hassling of the locals pushing their wares as it is a public beach.( P.S. Don't be afraid to haggle on the price for beach chairs & umbrellas there).
One final note about our beach at Sonesta G.B.: for the 1st few days, the drop-off as you enter the ocean is a little tricky to manoeuvre but it seems after a few rain storms, the sand levelled off and you could walk further out. The beach is more "seashell" crushed & not powdery soft, so if you have tender feet, bring along some water shoes. But you wont regret this quiet beach, nor watching the cruise-ships coming in to port or leaving. The number of boats will tell you too, how busy the port of call will be!
So, Sonesta G.B... we cannot wait for a return visit!

Room Tip: Go for the extra & book the Oceanview, its worth it & one deserves a great vacation!

Just returned a week ago from Sonesta Great Bay. This was not our first trip but we were very pleasantly surprised by all the improvements . In his few years at the hotel, GM Karl Bourne has made some terrific improvements to public areas, food and entertainment - Chocolate Factory band is fantastic- and he envisions some wonderful changes to come ! The food was terrific- something for everyone and very good with increased choices and venues. This is not a ''party'' hotel but the entertainment for the season was nightly ,and the activities available were enough to keep everyone as busy or relaxed as they wished to be. The location is terrific with lovely views of the cruise ships sailing off into the sunset and a short walk into Philipsburg . But as wonderful as everything was, it is the staff who make it ''home'' . From the moment of arrival, we were made to feel welcomed and all requests were handled cheerfully and quickly. I am sure I will miss mentioning some wonderful people but ''shout outs'' to Vicky at front desk, Michael and Maritza at the bar, Florida, Stanley, Dawn ,Marcia, Virginia ,Charlene ,Gilberto ,Rufino in the restauranst, chef Wayne-- and the list goes on . But a special mention to the entertainment staff ,they were all great --- but especially Michael David and Maria ! They were wonderful young people who ensured our vacation was special !!
