“Flamingo Beach Resort”
Reviewed 11 June 2007

We stayed at the Flamingo from June 3rd-10th. Had a great time, the resort was great. When we checked in our room overlooked the parking lot, contacted the front desk and was moved to a fantastic ocean view room overlooking the garden after a couple of days. Any concerns that we had were addressed immediately. Maintenance was on top of everything within minutes. There is an excellent beach on site. If visiting other beaches or the french side you will need a car.....beware of the drivers, it can be crazy at times. Overall we had a great time. You must eat at Pineapple Petes, the lobster thermidor is delicious. Go to the Greenhouse on Tuesdays, 2 for 1 drinks all day, the food is also delicious. Don't forget to go Moho Beach, that is where the nightlife is booming. The islanders are the friendliest people you will ever meet!

Basically we enjoyed our stay from 5/27-6/03. We stayed in a spacious studio. Same photos as shown in the previous review.
The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was clean,( room 7430) although there was still some construction going on. we did experience a few problems: 1. the AC was very loud. Called maintenance (quick response) and it help a little bit. 2. The bathroom fan kept blowing and making noise. 3. The elevator was not working for a short time on 2 occasions. 4. On the last day, we loaded the dishwasher but the soap reservoir would not lock.
5. Flushing the toilet was loud and one morning it would not flush. A call to maintenance responded and corrected that.

We rented a car from Dollar for the week. But you may only need a car for 3 days if you take some of the tours from the activity desk. That way you can rent a Hertz vehicle at the resort (and save $$).
We shopped for qroceries from Peli Deli which is only 1 block away from the garage exit. The Hollywood Casino is next to Peli Deli and there is a nice restaurant above Peli Deli. Go to Prime Super Market to buy your liquor...great prices like Sams Club, but they only accept cash.

My mother, niece, 20 month old son and I stayed at the Flamingo Resort in April 2007 for one week. The Flamingo was wonderful in comparison to the mold infested Sapphire Hotel.

Flamingo Positives: The Flamingo was a huge step up for our vacation. The room was large and very clean. Washer/dryer and kitchen facilities were all operational. The balcony was large and very clean. Overall the entire resort was very clean and met our vacation needs. Direct access to the beautiful beach was a positive. Restaurants close to hotel. Staff friendly and helpful.

Areas for Improvement: Maid service is needed more than once per week. The hotel needs to revisit their housekeeping service for weekly stays. Lack of an elevator in several buildings was extremely problematic, and not sensitive to those with special needs or children in a stroller. The swimming pool was small and away from the beach area.

Overall, a great stay for vacation. The hotel is worth the cost. Won't hestitate to book the hotel again in the future.

My husband and I stayed here from 5/12-5/19/07 and were prepared for all the negativity that we had read about this resort. This place was not a five star resort but it was not the bottom of the barrel either. We had a gardenview room that was gorgeous and we could even see part of the ocean. Our studio room had a king sized bed w/TV and a full sized kitchen with granite counters. We also had a sitting / dining area with a sleep sofa and( another TV) that could have been another sleeping area since you could use the sliding partitions for privacy. The beach was a little small and the sand was hot but we spent most of our time elsewhere on this tiny island. There were many restaurants and a deli within walking distance. Our check-in and check-out went smoothly. Although courtesy maid service was only once a week, our maid came in Monday through Friday during our stay and we left a small token of appreciation to let her know that.

Friends let us use their timeshare and we decided to stay at the Flamingo despite the mixed reviews below. There was a line at check in (isn't there always?) but it moved quickly enough and the front desk guy hooked us up with a beach front studio (w/pullout bed for our daughter) on the 5th floor. The room looked recently renovated-- like no one ever stayed in it before. All the furnishings were a nice quality and were in a contemporary island style. The beach area was very pretty and bigger than it looks in the photos. The pool was great too. We didn't eat in the restaurant on site but had a few drinks at the buy one get one happy hours (yummy). The grounds were well maintained and in general we have pleasant memories of the hotel. While it is located in built up area, full of other hotels/condos,the location is extremely convenient close to lots of restaurants, the airport and midway between both Marigot and Phillipsburg. I know some people complained about construction--yes there was some going on a bit down the street but I never heard any noise. Also other reviewers complained about no elevators--obviously they didn't look very hard because there are 2 of them! All in all we would stay here again!

Where we ate:
B'fast: La Veranda (across the street) and Ricks Place--both ok, nothing exceptional. Sunset Cafe in Grand Case (gorgeous location, wish the food was 1/10th as good as the view. Had the worst ever eggs benedict here, service was a bit curt but did I mention the view?? Maybe dinner is better?)
Lunch: Kontiki and Bikini Beach (Orient Beach) Taloula Mango Cafe (P'burg--very tasty!), Kuribuni (?) on Pinel Island (great ribs).
Dinner--Le Bec Fin (down the street, pricey, the food tried hard, looked good but just wasn't the 4 stars we thought it would be), Peg Leg pub (very good, very friendly host, the steak on my salad was so tasty my mouth is watering now just thinking about it), La Gondola (awesome flavorful Italian food, fabulous service, this place would give many high end restaurants in NYC a run for their money). Also ate at an awesome pizza place right near the simpson bridge (on right before you go over the bridge heading towards the airport) and went to Cheri's Cafe in Maho (entertaining show starts @ 8pm), food was ok, and it's fun place to celebrate birthdays.

What we did:
-Hit the beachs--Orient Beach, of course the most popular but truly beautiful despite the crowds. Also went to Mullet Bay beach which was quiet and still beautiful. Pinel Island was awesome, wonderful, a must see.
-Day trip to St. Barts on the Salwiga II. This was a nice trip which included a taxi tour of the island and lunch at the Blue Coconut (really great food). St. Barts is beautiful--the downtown is small, rather overpriced but cute and we had time to go to Shell beach (2 min from downtown) and the water was crystal clear and pretty. The only issue I had w/the Salwiga venture is that their website mentioned snorkeling was included in the price. On the boat I asked when we were going snorkeing and they informed me that it was no longer offered (but they failed to remove that piece of info from their website). We still had a good time.
--Shopping in Marigot and Phillipsburg. Marigot is ok, kind of dullsville and not as pretty (except for the marina area) as Front St. in P'burg (at least in my opinion). Bought a watch and a diamond ring @ Joes Jewelry (decent price, attentive and friendly service).

We found the island very easy to navigate in our rental car (Budget). Would we come back to St. Maarten? Sure! But with that said, there are so many beautiful places in the Caribbean we'd probably want to explore some different islands before returning to SXM.

The Flamingo Beach Resort is a very nice place to stay. The rooms are clean and were great before the remodeling. The finished rooms are outstanding and even elegant. The staff is great and very friendly. If you like a loud obnoxious resort this is not the place. I know that with construction going on people complain, but how the heck are they supposed to update if they don't have construction. Some people are just a bunch of complainers. They complain that is is dated and then when they try to update they complain about construction. If you go to the Flamingo you will not be disappointed. It is a great place with a great atmosphere.

  • Liked — Everything.
  • Disliked — Construction but to update it has to be done, but really no complaint.

Absolutely love St. Maarten! Stayed at the Sunterra Flamingo Resort off Billy Folly Road, on the Dutch side of course. Easy to fly into SXM and get to the resort about 1 or 2 miles away. We stayed for 8-9 days. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, and greeted us with drinks. The rooms were quaint with terrific views of the beach and Caribe. The rooms have kitchenettes and there are grills out on the beach, so you don't always have to go out. But there are plenty of places to dine at nearby. There was a grocery nearby and we did stock up on food and drinks for a week. They served the best cheeseburgers I've ever tasted from the beach-side bar. A nice pool to lounge in, plenty of beach and water for snorkeling and such, plus you can get a massage right on the beach. Always a daytime activity or games to do if you're not out running around seeing sites or shopping, fun to just sit, relax and not have to do anything. Would recommend renting a jeep because the island is fun to drive around. Definitley plan to go back.
