“Once a 4 star, but that must have been a long, long time ago...... :-(”
Reviewed 14 March 2011

Unhelpful staff, any problems reported were NOT considered to be the hotel's problems but our own to deal with. Example: mix-up in the room reservation on their end (they could NOT find our reservation when we arrived), missing and/or insufficient linens in the room for number of guests, items STOLEN right out of the hotel room! On the day we checked out, we reported that a cellular phone had been taken from our room and we were told by the helpful clerk at the front desk that it was funny since we were the FIFTH client to report something missing from their room that very morning!!! They did NOT feel that this posed a problem! It was simply a coincidence for them.
The hotel is clean overall but very dated. Everything is old and in dire need of being refreshed and/or modernized. It feels like you are walking straight into a 1970's time-warp. Worn-out beds, flat pillows, 13 inch antique tv in the room, 4 ..... OK.....maybe 5 minutes of hot water in the shower, plus what they call a mini-bar or fridge is more like a cupboard, everything you put in is kept lukewarm. The lounge chairs inside and around the hotel have all seen much better days.
Warning for the unlucky travelers with island view rooms (ahemmm......more precisely STREET view) : the noise in horrible. There is a nice long stretch of straight road in front of the hotel and the locals with their motorcycles, scooters, motocross, quads, (YES....these all ride freely in the streets) are compelled to accelerate thereby blaring their respective engines quite loudly from early in the morning until late into the night. Not to mention the cars and trucks which drive by with the music blasting so loudly that they set off the alarms of the cars parked in the hotel parking lot. (This is not even a joke)
Do not have high expectations of the hotel, but it is centrally located if you wish to explore the island and have quick access to most of the areas.
Another good thing: the pizza at the small but quaint restaurant at the corner of the street is absolutely incredible (don't miss it!).
The island is magnificent, lots to see and do. Incredible beaches. Good food everywhere when you dine out. Don't miss going to Palm Beach at Orient Bay. Also take the boat out to Pinel Island for the day (a little piece of heaven). And go eat and drink at Sunrise on Maho Beach and watch the airplanes, the food and drinks are good there.
Lastly: Be careful. If you get your cellular phone stolen on the island, its NOT for the phone, they steal them to load them with long-distance calls which your carrier will hold you accountable for. Also: they steal spare tires out of rental cars and you will be charged for them by the rental car company. Important tip: if you rent a car, when you leave it anywhere, open up all the compartments to show there is nothing to steal: glove compartment, cup holders, etc... Thieves often break the windows to get into the cars so its best to clearly show there is nothing of value hidden. You might even notice that some locals leave their doors open (really) to avoid any break-ins.
Other than that, the island is breathtaking and we had a wonderful time on all the outings and loved all the (other) places we spent time at and ate/drank at.

Returned 3/04/2011 from a week on the island of Saint Martin. After reading TripAdvisor comments from other travelers, we knew what to expect at Hotel Beach Plaza ...no surprises. Our quiet ocean side room had a large balcony with chairs and a table ... great views of Marigot Bay. The room was very clean ... hotel staff cleaned every day and refreshed towels. No bugs. Hot water runs out fairly quickly but this was not a problem after we adjusted the length of our showers and reduced the water temperature a bit. Voltage is 220 but the bathroom hair dryer has a 110 volt outlet which worked well for charging batteries on our tooth brushes, camera and iPods.

Free breakfast was generally good although we saw the same food every day ... scrambled eggs, meats, pancakes, cheeses, beverages, good variety of breads and fruits. Quality of food was quite good. Staff seemed to be short-handed resulting in running out of food items and running out of cups, plates, glasses, napkins, etc. Staff was quick to replentish items after being informed.

This hotel was in a great location to be used as a base for exploring the island. Close to the airport and within walking distance to groceries and shopping in Marigot. We rented a car from Alamo at the airport. Driving was a challenge ... narrow and hilly roads, many in bad condition, plus many speed bumps. Drivers need to be agressive to survive in the traffic.

We knew the hotel's beach was small but that was not an issue because our intention was to experience the many nice beaches on the island. Our favorite beaches were at Grand Case Bay, Friar's Bay and Cupecoy.

We stayed At the Beach Plaza for 2 nights pre-cruise. The property is old, but kept clean. Rooms are on the large side, with older furniture. Bathroom large, but could use some updates. We had a room facing the road, which really didn't bother us. Did not notice noise. Nice little balcony attached. Pool is surrounded by plexiglass, which made it feel a bit enclosed. Breakfast was ok - usual buffet - someone stole my english muffins twice while they were being toasted! Bartender in main bar was great - quiet, but very nice. Bartender at pool, not so great. The front desk was wonderful organizing taxi's for all of us to get to our ship. Great location to go to what I will call a straw market area with a few restaurants and bars ($2 beers) and the Royale Marine area. Marine area has several nice restaurants and nice shopping. Prices much higher than other area. Went to Cafe de Paris for lunch upon recs from TA - ok - not great. Also went to LaBelle Epoque for seafood pizza per TA rec. Will never go back here again! Terrible wait staff, took order brought salad and then came to take order again. What - already ordered seafood pizza - no we did not, etc......Left restaurant and ended up at Le France - had great meal and service. Would probably not recommend this hotel for a week long stay, but would for a 1-2 night stay.

We spent the week aghast.
First of all, unless you want to face the main road plus a sewage pipe extension under construction, you'll have to pay about 40 euros a night extra to change your room to face the sea. Air Canada doesn't mention this.
They say on the website there's a mini-bar. There isn't. As the front desk explained, it's a "cooling cupboard."
They don't serve drinks on the hotel's beach. Seriously. We would have had to drink warm white wine (no fridge) out of sippy cups.
You can't have a second room key without paying a huge deposit that you will forfeit if it's lost or stolen.
You have to pay a deposit to use your phone for local calls. I am not making this up.
The restaurant is awful. The bartender is surly. The bed was hard as a board. The pillows are stained and lumpy, the stained pillow covered with only one pillowcase (there's no zippered cover beneath). This did bother me.
The TV is so tiny you can't read the captions on the bottom, even with reading glasses and peering.
There is four minutes of hot water. I understand that, but they should tell you first. A slightly hot bath, for instance, would not be possible.
I could go on, but I won't. It's a cheap hotel, I admit, and might be fine for hikers. But it was not fine for me.

Hotel Beach Plaza is exactly as it has been presented in most reviews, 3 star. The hotel is older, but charming. The rooms were kept very clean, and the staff was friendly, especially if you greeted them with a friendly "Bonjour, Madamoiselle!". We flew in on an Air Canada Pkg and the room had been described as a Island View. Unfortunately, the Island view is facing the only, and very busy, road between Philipsburg and Marigot. It is worth paying for the upgrade of 35 euro/day to get a Ocean view. But, this hotel is still a gem, as it is one of the few accomodations close to Marigot. You did not need to rent a car here, as with most other accomodations that were far from the main shopping areas.
We walked into Marigot a couple times a day, about a 10 minute walk, to shop the local market. Here we found beautiful clothing and beadwork jewelery and belts designed by french nationals. Every night we walked to the Port Royale area, with its chic bistros and cafe's for dinner (try Cafe Paris near the boat rental kiosks), with some predinner shopping at the numerous, higher end, designer shops (Animale was our fav).
Go to Grand Case, a $18-20 USD cab ride, Tuesday nights, for Mardi Gras. There are hundreds of locals and tourists strolling the closed cobblestone street. Lolos are set up offering more that just BBQ, with quiet a few interesting looking libations. It also has 30 restaurants to choose from, all colorful and well-attended. We found that cabs from Marigot to anywhere (Philipsburg, Cul de Sac) were the new, govt. set $18-20, not the $7.50 quoted here in previous reviews. Take the cab to the ferry at Cul de Sac and spend an idyllic day on a beautiful sand spit, Pinel Island. Pay the $25 for 2 chairs with cushions and umbrella at The Yellow Restaurant, its worth it. We took pasteries and drinks from Marigot as the food is $$$ here. The excursion cost as about $35 dollars each for the day, all the more to spend at the great shops! Loved the slow pace (shops close from 2-4 for a civilized lunch), the friendly islanders and the incredible blue water and white sand beaches. One of the few places I want to return to.

We decide to take 5 days visit to saint martin and agency offered beach plaza hotel. Reception was ok but as soos as we got to the room and when back to get another room looking the beach but told me that should pay $50 per night to UPGRADE therefore I decided to stay in the room looking front. When start check in the room I found that TV was like 14 inches and was so old that must be consider as antique beside did not have cable only local stations mostly in french. During the night there is a lot of noise from cars and motorcycles that run open and fast.During the 5 days breadfast was totally the same nobody was preparing eggs or pancakes and pastries terribly to be french. The day we were leaving considering that our fly was leaving late we requested late check out was told that was not possible even 1-2 hours (normally 12 noon) and then offered storage room.
Sincerely I believe that that hotel was 4 stars when they open 20 years ago I supposse but at moment I have stayed even in costa rica in 3 stars hotel better (line casa luna in fortuna) at less that half the rate and better food and facilties. Beside offer of WiFi the msn was blocked for use and even the skype call were difficult to complete
