This is where USAirways puts you up when you have a flight cancellation. We had a renovated room which was a pleasant surprise although the placement of the air conditioner downstairs and the bed upstairs made no sense whatsoever. The showers had great updated fixtures- loved that after a long sweaty day at the airport to nowhere. We were told that the area the hotel was located was not safe to walk around as there had been robberies in the recent past. Hotel grounds were quite nice with a quiet beach area, decent pool, busy bar and nice dining area.
In this day and age good Internet connections are so important. Very bad connectivity at Mercure, although there was a computer in the lobby one could use.
Under different circumstances, might have liked it here more.

Room Tip: Ask for a recently notated room.

Dear Miss, Dear Sir,

We thank you for your comment and we are glad we have been helpful in such an unexpected event.

You seem to have spent the night in a duplex, which explains the location of the air conditioner. Since there are two single beds on the main floor and one king size bed upstairs, it is natural to place the air conditioner downstairs in order to cool the whole place off.

We are happy to read that you enjoyed the dining area and we hope you will be able to enjoy it even more under better circumstances.

Kindest regards,

The Mercure Team

We just returned from six good days at the Mercure. We were on the third (American) floor, facing the road, with a view of Nettle Bay. Since the whole family was traveling, we took a large two-level, two-bathroom room with two beds on the main floor and queen bed in the loft. I think we were in an as-yet un-renovated room, but it was just fine: clean, spacious, lots of room for clothes, snorkeling equipment, towels, books, purchases.

We had the breakfast-inclusive plan, and so ate every morning at the restaurant, which is open to the lagoon. Very lovely. Hot and cold food available and the coffee was fine. Good people-watching too: the guests were largely families (including many multi-generation ones) and young couples, mostly Francophone. We may have been the only Americans there.

The grounds are clean and well-groomed, with lots of sculptures. The art and the messages painted on the hotel's exterior walls give this elegant place some whimsy, a combination we liked at lot. We swam in the large pool just once since we were out and active everyday. There are lounge chairs and hammocks near the lagoon, which has a sandy beach, very calm water, and a great sunset view.

The staff was always professional and courteous. We made especial use of the concierge, who can be found easily at breakfast or in the hotel shop. She handled the on-site car rental and taxi rides to the airport, provided tourist information, and arranged a wonderful snorkeling day trip for us on the Winner Touch catamaran.

We liked the hotel's location. It's ten minutes outside Marigot on a quiet stretch of road. It was easy to drive further into the French side or, turning the other direction out of the hotel, drive into the Dutch side. There are a couple of good restaurants within walking distance and also a boulangerie with good sandwiches. The Baie Rouge beach is very close, and well worth visiting.

The only downside: The wifi connection was spotty, but our teenagers just rode it out; not a big deal. All in all, the hotel and its staff were a key part of this good family vacation.

We had a huge line on the reception because of a canceled flight. The rooms are old and very simple. I didn't like the bathroom.Good size rooms, spacious. Old tiles on the floor. INTERNET is VERY SLOW and sometimes doesn't work. Hotel restaurant is very good.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your comment.

We understand that your visit happened during an unexpected event - a cancelled flight. This explains the "slow internet", which might occur when a high number of mast minute guests connect at the same time.
We are happy to read that you enjoyed our restaurant, and hope that will try our new renovated rooms on your next stay with us.

Kindest regards,

The location (Sandy Ground) is a little isolated with very few shops or restaurants nearby, so a rental car was a must. However, Baie Rouge (one of the island's nicest beaches) was only a two-minute drive away, but otherwise in the evening the area is deserted. My room: More space and very up-to-date for the price and I loved the full-wall window and balcony overlooking the pool. My main disappointments? The poor water pressure and the "open shower" design. The hotel looks out at Simpson Bay, not the ocean, so while there is a nice waterfront area with chairs and hammocks, do not come expecting a beautiful oceanfront. The staff was like many I've encountered in French hotels, take that how you will. I was not a fan of the restaurant, but gracious for the complimentary breakfast. The wi-fi signal needs improvement, it kept cutting in and out. Beyond that, the Mercure was a pretty good deal but I'd choose another location on my next visit to the island.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your comment.

First of all, we would like to acknowledge you that The Hotel Mercure Saint-Martin & Marina is not located in Sandy Ground, but in the neighborood of Nettle Bay. Also, renting a car is almost mandatory in Saint-Martin, as everything is dispatched on the island.

We are sorry to read that you did not enjoy our quiet beach facing the lagoon, nor our gastronomy which pleases so many of guests.

We thank you for appreciating our renovated rooms and our complimentary breakfast, as well as for considering The Hotel Mercure Saint-Martin & Marina a "pretty good deal".

Kindest regards,

The Mercure Team

We arrived and checked-in quickly. I knew the hotel had recently been revamped and face-lifted so I expected a new room. But apparently my corporate rate didn't enable us to obtain one. The non-refurbished rooms (or "refreshed" ones as they call it) was a huge disappointment. It was like I left it 6 years ago with age showing in extra. It really was worn-out and shabby. The only difference I noticed with 2008 was the small flat screen TV. We decided to inquire about the extra charge to obtain a newest room. As we estimated the extra was worth the switch, we moved to a newly refurbished room. And there was the "real" Mercure St-Martin. A very nicely decorated room, very clean, with brand new materials everywhere + stylish furniture. We really loved it !! It was such a world of difference with the older rooms. Definitely worth the extra charge. The rest of the hotel is superb and a I like the local architecture. The only other downside was maybe the breakfast. Quality and variety is OK for the rate, but there is a lack of personnel at the peak times, so the buffet isn't always properly replenished. Just my opinion on this point. I would still recommend the hotel and would certainly go back in due opportunity.

Room Tip: Take a bay view room on 1st or second floor.
