Ok..perhaps the general atmosphere had a little to do with it...but our dinner at L'Auberge Gourmande was the best meal of our entire visit to St. Maarten. We met the owners wife in a shop in town...she "recommended" the restaurant of course, but it was the best recommendation we had. Our 1st attempt wasn't so great...we arrived just as they were closing down the kitchen...so we went across the street at the owner's suggestion. He even came across the street and served us a complimentary drink himself. So we returned the next night. The owner seated us and waited on us the entire evening. The food was delightful in every way, the atmosphere perfect, and yes, the bill reflected a true French restaurant on a French island in the Caribbean...but worth every penny. We loved it so much we almost returned the next night! Grand Case is a pretty charming area as well. If you have the chance, this is one place that should be a "must" on your visit to St. Maarten...once...if not twice!
