We stayed here for 3 nights in March. Overall, a great hotel and you won't be disappointed. After reading prior reviews, I wanted to add commentary based on our experience.

*location super convenient to Grand Case and an easy walk (you would have to be very old or out of shape to think that small walk difficult!
*beds super comfy
*checkin staff great --offered me a converter special for flat iron without me asking. Nice touch! Pool staff ok--didn't come out to ask for drinks you had to go bar and ask and one day no ices so couldn't make frozen drinks?
*airplanes mildly annoying taking off and landing--but worse was some of the motorbike sounds!! Crazy drivers revving through town !

All in all a great place but didn't hold a candle to the other place where we stayed for 4 nights in French cul-de-sac! See my other review....

Wow! My friend and I stayed at L'ESPLANADE for four nights this past week. She had never been to the Caribbean before. I have been to St. Maarten/Saint Martin many times with my family. This hotel "ON THE HILL, ABOVE THE REST" is spectacular! When we arrived we were greeted by Kristin who is part of the family that owns the hotel. She was so cool and down to earth that we felt as if we already knew her. We could have spent our whole time just hanging out and chatting with her. The architecture and colors of the reception area are calm and inviting and the view is amazing. I can see how this place has so many repeat visitors. My friend is already looking into plans to bring her sons here to show them , in her words "the perfect spot for a warm vacation."
I just finished reading some reviews on the hotel and feel I have to comment on the one titled " Couldn't have been more dissappointed." They stated they were expecting a "pampered stay". I guess we all have different definitions of words but... if I had to use one word for this whole hotel experience it would be just that...PAMPERED! The TV never worked? I'm not sure why there even needs to be a TV in the rooms considering the view from the balconies. There is so much to do. No food service in the hotel? ummm what about the fact that the rooms come with a kitchenette! It was fantastic to wake up in the morning to beautiful surroundings and to be able to make your own cup of coffee, eat the danish you bought the evening earlier at the local French Bakery, grab a chair on the balconey and have breakfast! After having breakfast, we would throw on our bathing suits head to the lobby to get the most wonderful cold cucumber and lemon water, (complimentary 24 hours a day) and head out for the day. We rented a car near the Philipsburg airport when we flew in from Boston. Kristen directed us to Orient Beach. We ended up starting everyday at Orient Beach taking a long walk on the sand and through the water. In the evenings each day,we would go the the pool area for Happy Hour and let Tammy and Alan entertain us! They were great! Somehow they always managed to bring everyone together in conversation and laughter. Really nice meomories. Then we would head down a serene pathway with beautiful Boganvillia and Aloe growing on both sides. The path took us to a local road where you get a nice taste of how the locals live. Next thing you know you are on the main drag of Grand Case. So festive. Some many choices of places to go and shop and eat! I can go on and on about the whole experience that started at L"ESPLANADE... THE HOTEL ON THE HILL ABOVE THE REST! I just cannot imagine anyone being dissappointed at this Magical place. I cannot wait to return. Maybe next time around Kristin will join us for a glass of wine!

This hotel is every bit as good in person as it looks on their web site. The staff could not have been more helpful. The view from our room was amazing. I would highly recommend it to anyone staying on St. Maarten.

We just finished our third year at Hotel L'Esplanade and already reserved a week next year. This is the only place in the world that we return to over and over. The rooms are large, clean and we love the tasteful renovations that have been done by Kristin and her team. We go to the beach a lot but plan to spend more time at the pool next year because it is so lovely. Our favorite thing is to be able to walk to dinner in the evening and walk home after a perfect meal feeling totally relaxed.

We booked L'Esplanade based on the wonderful reviews we read here. I can't imagine that those people stayed in the same hotel. We considered this hotel to be a splurge as almost $500 per night is more than we have ever considered paying in the past. We expected this to be a pampered stay. Soo wrong. First, no porter service, no help with our bags when we left, no turn-down/tidy up service and NO ONE could be reached after 9pm!! Our TV never worked correctly and our calls went unanswered except for one very sweet girl on one occasion who tried her best but had no knowledge of how to adjust the TV.
The room was lovely and so was the view from the balcony. End of good points. We were provided with complimentary coffee the first day to make ourselves in the coffee maker and also a baquette. Since there is NO food service in the hotel, we ordered coffee and two danish for the next morning. Big Surprise. The "danish" was the quality we can buy at a grocery store in a cellophane package (but wouldn't consider) and were essentially inedible. For 2.25 each that was pretty ridiculous. The coffee, provided on the first day, was subject to a high charge on this day.
The good restaurants were "nearby" but first one had to negotiate very long and very steep stairs down the hill, a walk on uncertain footing, more lengthy walking on the road up and down hill.
We discovered a wonderful place for breakfast and other meals at the Grand Case Beach Club, where we should h ave stayed! The same long walk and stairs are required, but it's a lovely place, beachside, good food, good service. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there on different occasions. They have a great beach also and a nice shop. Staying there would have been a totally different experience that we wished we had been able to enjoy.
Assorted other problems with the hotel: a stain on the duvet cover which was a big turnoff,
the tub is very high and not easy to enter and there is absolutely nothing to hold on to. No grab bars, no nothing. It really spoiled the beginning to what had promised to be a wonderful relaxing island splurge. Luckily, we went on to board the Windstar and had a beautiful week with wonderful accomodations.

We do not have an actual porter but there are many capable hands around to assist with luggage, coming and going. Had oshkoshwriter dialed 9 for reception, we would have sent someone right up to their room to assist with their luggage on the day that they were checking out.

We have a full housekeeping staff and each room is serviced once daily. We do not have a turn down service.

Our office is open daily from 7:30am until 9pm. After 9pm the phones are forwarded to my house which is on the property. You can reach someone 24 hours a day at L'Esplanade.

I unfortunately never heard about this TV problem or it would have been rectified if it was within our control (i.e. not a problem with the actual cable company).

To get you started, we provide a welcome basket with coffee, tea, cookies and a fresh baguette. There is complimentary coffee in the reception at all times. We provide breakfast if you desire it and lunch poolside (in season). Our breakfast pastries are provided fresh, daily from Zee Best which is one of the most famous and well respected bakeries on the island!

Our linens are impeccable. If a stain got by our keen eye, I apologize. A quick call and it would have been replaced immediately and taken out of circulation.

As for the walk into town, we are located on the hill, overlooking the bay of Grand Case. You walk down about 20 steps to our gently sloped footpath which takes you to "Restaurant Row".

I can only fix problems if they are brought to my attention. To mention them once you are home and I can no longer do anything is frustrating for me, as we do strive for perfection here at L'Esplanade.

My wife and I just returned to for a week to Hotel L'Esplanade. Our second stay. There really is nothing more to say about this property than all the previous TA comments, other than it has a great team who understand the needs of their visitors...and continually seeks to help and assist on any matter.

During our previous visit we had stayed with another couple at the Villa up the hill from the hotel and did not spend time at the main hotel pool or pool bar (as the Villa has its own private pool). On this trip, on our last half day before our flight we enjoyed a couple of hours by the pool area which is a very peaceful space during the early and mid day.

Just sitting back in our chairs and letting the various wild like fly, meander or buzz by, including many birds, butterflies, and a few colourful and friendly iguanas and/or Geckos, it reminded us of Costa Rica. Combined with the beautiful plants, flowers and vegetation it was a very relaxing wind down to our last hours at L'Esplanade.

Tammy one of the excellent pool bar staff was just arriving when we were leaving. Ask her to make one of her famous "Tammy Wammy's" (rum punches) on your arrival day and it will get you in the St. Martin mood right off the bat.

Thank you to all the staff for your kind and generous hospitality!

A fantastic experience for at "at home luxury" experience in the Caribbean. From the owners to the staff there is no better hotel in St. Martin. Steps to the beaches and wonderful french cuisine mixed with the local fare creates the perfect atmosphere for family and couples.
