L'Hotel L'Esplanade is the perfect place for couples that want to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and tranquility. It is by far the quietest most private hotel I have ever stayed in. The room as you can see from the photos was beauiful. Some details like fresh bread and cookies on arrival, beautiful french soaps in the bathroom and small pretty flowers laid around the room shows that these owners think of nearly every detail. The bed was amazing. We wanted to take it with us. We both slept so well it was hard to get up in the morning. The view of the ocean and gardens every morning was beautiful and the fitted kitchen was excellent - we enjoyed breakfast in bed every morning thanks to my boyfriend. There is no restaurant or bar at this hotel and this is on purpose and what makes the hotel really quite. You can order wine, sodas etc to your room. People come to this hotel from complete relaxation. The pool is gorgeous and we both feel asleep on the comfy deck chairs. Our only complaint was some basics missing from the room for the price we paid - no bath tub, we had to ask for an iron and board which is a basic amenity in all hotels and breakfast was not incuded. Even though they dont have a restaurant for the prices they charge including a pastry, juice & water should be included. All in all we would recommend this hotel for those of you that want to unwind. Another recommendation is for dinner at L'escapade - call Axel in advance to reserve a table by the ocean. Food was fantastic and exquiste presentation and service.

i Can't say enough about L' Esplanade. The staff is Wonderful, the room was beautiful, and as you can see from our photos, the view was spectacular. Grand Case is the place for you if you don't like crowds. The restaraunts are fabulous, and you feel safe even walking around at night. If you are traveling to St. Martin, you will be pleased if you choose this hotel.

Do not hesitate to stay here. The hotel is immaculate. The staff was WONDERFUL to a person, everyone was courteous and nice every time.
Needed an adapter for the higher voltage plug--no problem, they handed me a high quality one to use for free.
Free wireless in rooms. A little confusing--went out for a day--but they just let me use their PC in the office to check on things.
Let them suggest and make reservations for you at the many great restaurants at grand case. Told them it was our 25th anniversary--they called the restaurant and asked them to make it special--got a private table overlooking the ocean at Tastevin-very nice!!.
The grounds are quiet, relaxing and elegant. We have been to many other hotels. This place was among the best. If you are looking for glitz, go elsewhere. If you understand refined understated class--go here.
By all means rent a small car (much easier to park-and you don't stick out as a tourist). Wait to you get there to rent, lots of rentals and they will cut $$ to get you. We got a slightly worn Hyundai Accent for $175/week-don't take the first price--I printed out and took internet pricing and made them beat the $$ which they did immediately. (The rental companies will try to tell you that you need an SUV or a Jeep, but you do not need one--in fact the islanders will just know that you are a tourist.)
Best thing to do on the island is the "12 Metre Challenge" in Philipsburg (yacht racing on the real Stars and Stripes and Canada II).
Best beach for making a day of it-Orient beach-rent a couple of chairs at a cafe and watch the parade of people. Best quiet beach-Dawn Beach.
Best $10 meal-go to the outdoor grills--the "Tolos" in Grand Case.
Best grocery Store is Match on the main road into Marigot.
Drive to the parking lot at top of mountain (we walked up there-and then found a lot when we got there) at Ft. St. Louis in Marigot-great views of much of the island.
Have fun.

Hotel L'Esplanade is above and beyond what we were expecting. The room (15) was remarkable with two decks (I miss the breeze) a loft for our comfy and clean bedroom, a great shower , and a full kitchen for a snacks, many many bottles of water, and Carib! The hotel staff were all very warm and knowledgable about how their guests could make the most of their trip. We received a (personalized) welcome letter with a great packet of meal, beach and activity suggestions. It was very useful. Furthermore, we enjoyed not having to connect with someone for every need. If we needed beach towels, we grabbed them from the foyer and brought back at the end of the pool visit. It's a very hands-off approach to vacation, which we enjoyed very much. Oh and the pool is fabulous. We enjoyed the short (and pretty) walk down to Grand Case to meet people, have dinner, have a drink or go sit on the beach. We stayed at another bigger resport for a night before coming here and there was no comparsion. L'Esplanade is very best hotel I have ever stayed in.

My husband and I chose L'Esplanade after extensive research. I am very picky about where we vacation seeing as we are spending a lot of money. I want it to be well worth it. I dare to say that this was even better than our honeymoonn where we stayed at a very upscale hotel in Cabo, Mexico.

Please, do believe the very high ratings from all the other travelers. They are all true and then some. The property is beautiful, immaculate, artistic and serene. The owners have put a lot into a property that blends in with its surroundings yet stands out as a hotel like no other on the island. With every room facing the ocean, there is no bad view. Watching the boats on the water at sunset was something we will never forget. The staff was helpful and accodomating with everything from reservations to simple questions we had. Housekeeping even did our dishes! (There is a wonderfully stocked kitchenette in every room.) We chose a studio room as it was only the two of us and it was more than ample in space. We had a very comfortable King sized bed even with out the feather top (before we arrived I alerted them to my feather allergy and it was never on our bed). The room has a fantastic rustically sexy vibe that was perfect on our first anniversary. When we told them it was our anniversary, they gave us a free bottle of champagne which was a nice touch. The pool is very pretty and a nice way to relax after beach hopping all day.

Do book an excursion with the ScoobiFree tour operators (the hotel has great suggestions of activities). We took the very new, beautiful catamaran to Tinta Marre (a neighboring uninhabited island) to snorkel and then to Anguilla which was also paraside! I practically cried when we left. The staff on the boat was so friendly and laid back. We loved every minute. In fact, the whole island was laid back. Some of our best memories were sharing an 8 euro, delicious bottle of french wine on a practically deserted beach at sunset. Anywhere in NY we would be chased off the beach at that time or for having alcohol. Anywhere you go in St. Martin every one is happy and relaxed.

We went to Islet Pinel, too. For a five minute, $6.00 round trip ferry we were blown away by the beauty of this island as well. Do take a hike around the nature preserves beause the uinhabited island is amazing! There are two fun beach restaurants there that provide chairs, umbrellas and food. The water is so clear and calm, it is also great for families. Baie Lounge was a very lovely public beach with slightly stronger surf. We also loved Petit Plague, the beach closest to the hotel. It was a short walk with crystal blue, very calm water. Again, you can also rent chairs and umbrellas there which I always appreciate.

As for restaurants, our favorites in order were 1. Le Cottage - unbelievalbly delicious french food in a relaxed atmosphere 2. Spiga- really good Italian 3. Mario's Bistro (in Marigot) great french, very friendlly, right on the marina 4. Calmos Cafe - awesome beach vibe, great service and tremendous food! 5.Le Tastevin was also really good and right on the water in grand case 6. the lolos (barbque beach shacks) were delicious and cheap. We also ate at a few places on Orient Beach which were tasty and fun (Kontiki and the other Italian place). Orient was a bit of a scene but a definite must if you like the party atmosphere. We really needed more relaxing than partying.

Some tips- 1. go in the "off season." It is much less crowded (the locals said that it can be extremely chaotic during the winter months). We went late June to early July and it was perfect. Only twice did it rain and it was for about 20 minutes. Each day was sunny with only a few clouds. The trade winds make it very moderate in temperature, too. Perhaps later in the summer is worse but I totally recommend going at this time. L'Esplande offered a stay five nights get 2 free which we definitely took advantange of, the beaches are not crowded at all and you will never have to wait for a reservation! 2. Bring bug spray! enough said. 3. Rent a car through the hotel. They pick you up, drop you off and for about $30 a day, it is well worth it to see the island. Driving is pretty easy, too. But I would suggest taking a taxi to Philipsburg. We couldn't park anywhere and had to go home with out shopping the best duty-free around.

So many people we met were on their repeat visit to St. Martin. More than a few were also US or French folks who just picked up and moved there! Not one person that we spoke with was having a bad time. Enjoy L'Esplande and St. Martin. You will love it!

My wife and I just returned from St. Martin, our third trip to the island. Each visit we have stayed at Hotel L'Esplanade and each time we have been thoroughly impressed with the level of service and the level of accommodation, particularly considering the price. We stayed in a 1 BR loft and the view of Grand Case was spectacular. All of the rooms have a view of the water. Our room was very clean and comfortable with air conditioning. Although the hotel is not on the beach, it is only a short, 10 minute walk down the hill to Grand Case beach. (You will find that you probably will be sampling several of the great beaches around the island by car so a short walk is not inconvenient in my mind.) The hotel's staff will make every effort to make your stay enjoyable and they have many great recommendations for food, fun and entertainment. Be sure to eat at one of the great restaurants located on Restaurant Row in Grand Case which is also a short 10 minute walk from the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel as not only one of the best values on the island but also one of the best hotels.
