“This is a great place to relax...and eat!”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

Our room was very comfortable with a lovely balcony overlooking the ocean. The sound of the surf and the evening frog chorus was music from heaven for me. My wife and I spent a lit of time on the balcony enjoying the sunsets and watching the pelicans dive for fish. We spent seven days there and had purchased their adventure package and enjoyed four delightful meals in their restaurant as part of the package. We also had many breakfast there and especially enjoyed their French Toast with rum soaked apple topping. The restaurant service was tops (we enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner). Their pool is large and attractive and I am guilty of enjoying a lot of hammock time on our balcony.

So come and enjoy the laid back and friendly folks of the BVIs. Thanks for a wonderful vacation.

The TV was acceptable but really needed a DVD player with movies available as the available programs seem to be all advertisements. There is lots of reading material available.

The beach across the road is exclusive for hotel guests and has a sheltered gazebo that serves drinks and lunches. The beach is fine for sunning and the swimming is ok provided there is not a lot of surf. We went to Brewers Bay ( few exciting miles away by car) for snorkeling, but the best snorkeling is by going on a day sailing package. We also went to swim with the porpoise and had a super time there. I should mention that my wife and I are both in our seventies. The only downside of our vacation was the rainy weather and high surf and arranging transportation from St. Thomas-don't trust the published ferry service schedule (especially late afternoon). I suggest you call first.

Room Tip: We had the Plantation Suite room. It is close to the road but road noise is overcome by the sound of...

We stayed here for seven nights. Overall, it is a nice enough place but could use some updating. The nights are pretty quiet on Tortola, so a television with cable and perhaps a DVD player would have been good. The beach out front is kind of rough for swimming, but a nice view. The outdoor shower at our room (no indoor shower is available) was okay but there was not enough hot water for my husband and I to each have a hot shower without making sure we kept it very short. Staff was overall pleasant. Dining room for dinner is very nice but expensive. Lunch on the beach was really good. If you stay here you must rent a car, as it's pretty isolated.

Room Tip: The pool suites provide a nice seating/living area separate from the bedroom which is good if one pe...

My husband and I spent a week at the Sugar Mill Hotel. It certainly lived up to the expectations we had. This is not a chain hotel and thus you don't get all the amenities a big hotel can offer. But, if you are looking for a great hotel with wonderful food, views and comfortable rooms this. Is your place. We had a microwave and fridge in our room, a sitting are and a separate bedroom area. The beach is not the best on the island, very small, but it's a great place to sit and watch the sunset, have lunch or just bring a drink down. The pool is not big but very pleasant. This is not the place to go to if you are looking for nightlife, but if romance, great food and ambiance is what you want, this is the one for you! The staff was very helpful, nice and friendly. Wish I could go back right now!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 143 that had a great patio, closest one to the road though, but we never were both...

Based on the recommendation of American friends who had been trying, for many years, to encourage us to visit Tortola and, in paraticular, The Sugar Mill Hotel, we eventually made it! (For British visitors - via Antigua) The setting is a delight and, from our pool suite, we woke to a stunning view every morning. The rooms are beautifully cleaned and the lush grounds full of exotic flowers, shrubs and trees are well maintained but allow the individual rooms/cottages to feel secluded in their tropical setting.

We had chosen the seven day adventure package which seemed to provide the best value after very expensive travel from the UK.

Breakfast is taken in a dining room overlooking the ocean and the hotel's sandy beach, so you can start the day watching pelicans diving! The hotel's beach is small but more than adequate for the hotel's clients - loungers are provided as are bathing towels. There is a beach restaurant that serves a good selection of lunch time meals and drinks. Dinner is served in a more formal setting of the beautiful old stone "mill". The menu changes daily (sign in for dinner each morning) As well as good food there is an excellent wine list.

The bar serves a wide range of cocktails.

The staff are a joy and the welcome is warm and friendly. If we were nearer we would not hesitate to return

Room Tip: Beautiful views from the pool suites

We visited Tortola to attend our nephew's wedding. We thoroughly enjoyed our days at Sugar Mill. The staff was very attentive in every way - room maintenance, the loan of snorkel fins, and luggage retrieval. Our suite was spectacular and the stone and planter "outdoor" shower was unique and wonderful. We loved the small, sandy beach and easy access to the quiet and warm water. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Tortola.

Jane and Jim

Room Tip: We stayed in a Pool Suite and highly recommend it for the view and comfort.

Three of us stayed for a couple of nights before going on a yacht trip. I booked this hotel based on the various reviews that I had read and was anticipating something special. The hotel did not quite reach those heights for me. Don't get me wrong it was good but just did not stand out. I probably was a result of the age demographic but the place was dead by 9:30 in the evening which takes quiet to a new level. Bomba shack just down the road though...!

Room Tip: De Luxe studios provide a great view and are away from the road altough up a short steep slope

My husband and I recently traveled from our home on St Maarten to try another Caribbean island that we had not yet visited. We decided on Tortola and chose the Sugar Mill Hotel for our stay. I had read about the Sugar Mill in Bon Appetit years ago and always dreamed of staying there. My dream came true! It was a perfect stay. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a pool suite. We absolutely loved the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful and truly seemed to care that we had a great time. We had several meals at the hotel and they were all wonderful. We definitely recommend the Sugar Mill Hotel to anyone who plans to visit Tortola.
