I stayed at The Sugar Mill while conducting business in the BVI recently. My wife and I quite enjoyed our stay there. Normally, when I go to Tortola, I stay at Long Bay Resort, just down the street. I think The Sugar Mill will be my new first choice. The service was the best you can expect for the Virgin Islands. They were extremely accommodating and helped us arrange many of our activities to keep us occupied in our free time.

Our room provided us with an amazing view of the ocean. We also enjoyed relaxing by the pool. The beach was nice, but the constant sound of cars and trucks passing made it hard to relax. Aside from that, it was a peaceful place to watch the sun set and on clear days we could see many of the surrounding islands.

We ate most of our meals at the hotel restaurant. It is considered one of the best on the island. I can see why, After eating at The Dove and Jolly Roger on our first two nights, we ate the hotel on the third night, and every night after that. The menu is not as big as most places, but it changes every night. My favorite was the short ribs, which were done with a caribbean twist. My wife is a vegetarian and each night she was provided with a new option, which was nice. The service at the restaurant was also very good.

If you are ever in Tortola and are looking for a nice quiet place to stay, be sure to check out this little hidden gem.

We just returned from our stay at the Sugar Mill in Tortola. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to have been upgraded to the Plantation Suite which we found to be quite charming. The decor was lovely, the bed very comfortable, and the balcony with the swinging hammock overlooking the water was idyllic.

Overall, our experience at the hotel was very satisfactory...if I had to pick a negative, it would be lack of 'concierge' type service for advice on where to go, how to get around, tips on how to make the most of our vacation, etc...

The one thing I was disappointed in contrary to other posts, is the dinner meal we experienced at the Sugar Mill restaurant. While the service was great and the atmosphere beyond compare...the food selection was limited ( and repetitive throughout our stay ) and not that tasty. Most importantly, I feel it was way overpriced for the subpar food.

That said, we did have some decent, less expensive meals at Sebastian's, Long Bay Resort, and Pusser's.

Taxi rides seemed very expensive and for 3 days of our stay we did have a car rental. We nearly wore our nerves down to their painful ends driving past Long Bay down the unpaved roads by Smuggler's Cove and up and over the island to the south end by Soper's Hole ( lots of curves, dips, and riding on the edges of cliffs). Later, we realized there was a much easier and calmer route cutting across Zion Hill. So, just a word of warning - if you are brave enough to ride around, ask a local for the best route how to get there without scaring the beejeezus out of yourself.

The beach at Sugar Mill was really nice...great to take evening swims! Long Bay also had a very nice beach as was White Bay over on Yost Van Dyke which was a 20 minute ferry ride away. Serenity spa down at Soper's Hole provided some relaxing massages...the botanical gardens in Roadtown are a must see...the race track on Sunday was fun...and Bomba had a nice full moon party despite an overcast and drainy night.

Last bit of advice..make sure to purchase some Off! when you get there as the mosquitos are very much active on the island. While I was spared for the most part, my partner didn't fare so well.

The Sugar Mill Hotel is the perfect place to unwind and relax. The atmosphere is laid back, quiet, and romantic. This was our first trip to Tortola and couldn’t have asked for better accommodations. Our room had a wonderful ocean view, with lovely surroundings. The restaurant exceeded our expectations with a different menu every day. Everybody agrees it is one of the best restaurants on the island. The beach, like other travelers said, is small but never crowded. The very professional warm and friendly staff made you feel welcome. If you want an intimate, beautiful, and quiet place to relax the Sugar Mill Hotel is the place to be. We highly recommend it.

My husband I went to the Sugar Mill Hotel on Tortola for our honeymoon, and it exceeded all of our highest expectations. It is a quick 10 minute taxi ride from the West End ferry dock, and from the moment we arrived, every last detail is accounted for. The rooms are clean and beautiful, the outdoor stone showers are INCREDIBLE and the location exudes relaxation and bliss!

The restaurant was amazing, too. The breakfast terrace was serene and gorgeous, the lunch cabana on the beach is perfect, but the most incredible part of the dining experience was dinner. The menu changes every night and each course and meal is better than the next! I promise you that you'll find it unique and amazing!

A few pieces of advice for people reading this review:
1.) Since meals are served at set times, I would recommend picking up some drinks and snacks from a grocery store before getting to the Sugar Mill;
2.) We went sailing on the White Squall 2 and it was the MOST incredible day! I definitely recommend this boat over all other companies!
3.) Go to Serenity Spa in West End. It's a small spa, but the massages we got were awesome and it was very relaxing!

Intimate hotel which exceeded our expectations with beautiful caribbean decor in the rooms and common areas. Extremely well maintained rooms and property with everything you could want at your fingertips (especially the little things like drying racks for bathing suits on the large porch to our room and basins to wash the sand off your feet). We were also automatically upgraded to a pool suite with separate bedroom and living room/bar area without having to ask. The roomy outdoor shower was like bathing in a tropical garden - really unique experience!

Dinner definately lived up to the reviews we read - it was an excellent meal, well paced to allow the time to enjoy the meal to it fullest from appetizer to dessert. We were amazed that after checking in and seeing some of the staff once, when we arrived for dinner they greeted us by name. Lots of places to sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful views from the porches at the main building, your room or the pool. Nice size swimable beach with bar & food. Watching the pelicans dive for their dinner was a new experience while in the BVI.

The Sugar Mill has to be the best on the island and we will definately be staying there again next time we visit.

this place is in a lovely setting, has a pool and their own private beach. Their restaurant is one of the best on the island and the cafe on the beach is excellent. The pictures I've seen on the Web and in their own brochures don't do it justice. The staff was exceptionally friendly!
