“Best location in Cane Garden Bay”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

I am almost too afraid to write this review, in case Mongoose gets so popular that I struggle to get a booking in future! From our first email interactions it was clear that this would be a home from home - friendly, safe and well equiped. Even so, it exceeded our expecations. It is a minute walk from the beach which, in my opinion, makes it better situated than the places on the beach that may get slightly noisy or busy during season. There is a little jungle path that connects the property with the beach, which is lush and beautiful. The apartments themselves are spacious, beautiful, well fitted with everything you might need on vacation, and clean as a whistle. They are well designed so that you may have your privacy or so that you could interact with your neighbours should you choose to. The guest manual is brilliant and comprehensive and explains everything you need to know about the services. One of my favourite things is that the tap water is clean and sweet and safe to drink. I didn't buy a single bottle of water during our entire stay, and I am usually very sensitive to water in foreign countries. The other boon is that there is a little supermarket 5min's walk down the road, and we could cater for ourselves in our well equiped kitchen very nicely. There was also a washing line right outside our kitchen door which is a blessing to many a traveller. Sandra and Elroy are superb hosts - friendly, helpful, intelligent & thoughtful people who get the balance between professionalism and personalising just right. Honestly, this is one of my favourite places of all time.

I have stayed here multiple times and yes you can nitpick (no microwave) but the location, value and the owners make this a tremendous place to stay.

Mongoose is very well maintained (it always seems freshly painted outside each time I visit), the wi-fi is great and there is a huge channel selection for those who want to escape the Caribbean sun for a while and relax inside. I have stayed here multiple times (lost count) since just after the year 2000. I've stayed here for a couple of days to decompress before and after a sailboat charter and also just come for a week (or more) to decompress on the beach. Mongoose is set back from the beach maybe 100 yards up though a palm tree plantation. In the evenings you are surrounded by lovely trees and hills with the amazing chorus of tiny tree frogs. The apartments are quite large and contain a king size bed, huge closet, changing room and open (very well supplied) kitchen dining area. There are two long bench sofas which (I presume) can be used as single beds for larger parties. There is Road Town for major shopping (you will need a car for that) but there are some small shops nearby which have most of the food things you will need.

I say go to Cane Garden Bay and stay at Mongoose as soon as you can. I doubt you'll regret it.

The section of beach that is closest to Mongoose is also the best in Cane Garden Bay. There are not that many bars in CGB anyway but this is, even so, the quietest section and the water is absolutely gorgeous. Each time I visit I am scared in case it has changed but it really has not over the years. It's amazing that you can swim out a couple of hundred yards from the beach, see the sand below and look around at the tree covered hills. Still relatively unspoiled. Do pay a visit.

Room Tip: Stay in a higher room if you can (thought that means there are stairs to climb) . It's like slee...

We have just returned from our sixth visit to Tortola. We have stayed at Mongoose for four of those trips. Our stay was two weeks, and we loved every minute! Mongoose is conveniently located in Cane Garden Bay, which has plenty of rest and entertainment. Groceries, laundry facilities, excellent restaurants and music are all within walking distance. The apartment kitchen is fully supplied with whatever cooking utensils you might need. Bobby's grocery is just down the road and is as well stocked as a grocery in Road Town. We rent a car and travel easily from Mongoose to any beach on the island. Should you want to go into Road Town, it's a quick drive down Joe's Hill Road. Sandra and Ellie are wonderful hosts, and can help you find anything or anyone you need on the island. They are a wealth of information about the history of Tortola and the surrounding islands. Sandra always made time to spend time chatting comfortably in the office on the first floor. Michelle kept the apartment clean and comfortable, and was also very helpful in answering any questions. Mongoose is a perfect place to spend an anniversary vacation, honeymoon, or just for some time away relaxing. We had access to internet through Wifi, which we really appreciated. Many other reviewers remarked on the roosters, but we did not find that they disturbed our sleep. We did make use of AC at night, and with that and the comfortable beds and darkened room (the closed shutters kept the sunlight away until we were ready to arise), we slept like babes. The walk to the beach is absolutely beautiful and makes the experience even better! At the end of the lane is Columbus Bar, which offers drinks and sundries at a reasonable price. Down the street is Myett's, Quito's, Sailor's Rest and many other wonderful beach vendors and restaurants. Just a short drive and you can find Sugar Mill, Bomba's Shack, and the Banankeet restaurant. All of the beaches (Smuggler's Cove, Long Bay, Brewer's Bay, Lambert Bay, Josaiah's Bay) are short drives from Cane Garden Bay. We learned of this beautiful spot from friends of ours who went to Tortola every year for 15+ years, and stayed at Mongoose for each visit. Sandra remembers each guest by name, and which room they stayed in. She truly enjoys meeting and getting to know all of her guests. We will return to Tortola next year, and don't even have to think about where we are going to stay...MONGOOSE!!

Room Tip: We stayed on the upper floor and had a beautiful view of the palm and mango trees. Apt. 4, 5, or 6 w...

I have been to Mongoose now 5-6 times all on business trips. The "home away from home" feeling is what keeps me coming back ... as well as the chats with Sandra in her office (if you go there you will know what I mean). The small grocery which is walking distance is very practical to make your own meals which is the whole idea behind Mongoose and its full kitchen. I highly recommend you rent a car while in BVI ; its the best way to get around and see everything.

We recently spent a week at the Mongoose Apartments on Tortola, and we’re glad to say we were entirely satisfied with all dimensions of our visit. The apartment was spacious, perfectly clean and in excellent repair, well equipped, and well situated for the beach (a three-minute walk…we could hear waves from our front porch) and nearby amenities (groceries, laundry, restaurants). But more than the apartment, Sandra herself was a warm, gracious, and incredibly helpful hostess. An altogether wonderful experience.

A must stay place. Stayed in room 5 and very happy. Big apartment with king bed, large kitchen and every kind of cooking tool we could think of. Roosters greeted us in the a.m. which we loved. Hummingbirds and bananaqeets are frequent visitors to the feeders.

We used the kayaks, loungers and floating mats. It was a hard choice on the toy of the day. Sandra and Michelle felt like family and very helpful from arranging a taxi to sharing the local hints.

We did not rent a car but one day during our stay and there is no need to since its relaxation city.

Our regret was venturing on to St. Thomas and St
John instead of hanging out longer in the Mongoose.

We returned from our 10th trip to Tortola and the Mongoose Apartments the first of Nov. Each time we complete the 20 plus hour trip from the Mongoose to our home we say, "this is probably the last trip" and then as time heals our travel wounds we say, "one more time". Hugs from Sandra, Michelle and Eli once again tell us the travel trama was worth it. We are at our home away from home!
Over the years we have watched the Mongoose develop and grow and the desire to make your stay pleasant has been maintained at the highest level. Sandra still makes it happen.
This is a great place to get married on the beach and also a wonderful place for a quiet honeymoon. At 70+ years of age and 50 plus years of marriage we still feel like we are on a honeymoon when we are at the Mongoose.

Room Tip: We really enjoyed the new apartments #7 & 8
