My wife and I stayed 4 days at The Heritage Inn in December 2010. We enjoyed making our breakfast in the well equipped kitchen and sitting on the balcony. The western view of the neighbouring islands was fantastic. There is a great market in Cane Bay and restaurants in the area, especially The Sugar Mill, pricey but beautiful and a great steak dinner. The Bananakeet on site was also one of the best meals we had, not to mention the views with a drink.
We rented a car with Chris's help and saw most of the island. We also went to Bomba's Shack for the Full Moon party, it was lots of fun. A day trip to Jost Van Dyke is well worth the effort as well as some of the other islands are close by. Make the effort to find the little bars and beaches; we especially enjoyed Josiah Bay Beach.
One note, this is not a place for the all-inclusive, facilities driven traveller. It’s a laid back and not in your face kind of place…the kind that my wife and I enjoy.
Thanks to Chris and staff for a great stay.

Our family of four stayed here for 3 nights in July 2011. We had been hopping around the USVIs and BVIs, and ended our vacation on Tortola at Heritage Inn. It was the perfect place to wrap up the trip. The views from our balcony were really unbelievably gorgeous. We had a rental jeep and felt like we should've been driving around the island more, but the real temptation was just to hang out at Heritage and enjoy the view.

Our 2-bedroom unit was spacious and clean, and we very much enjoyed a/c in the bedrooms (we had just come from Ivan's campground on Jost, so we were craving some cooler sleeping!). It was great having the kitchen, and we did get some food to cook some meals in.

Chris is an adorable host, very warm and likable :) and she's makes you feel at home immediately.

The pool was great for cooling off in the afternoon. It's small and right next to BananaKeet restaurant, so it (the pool) closes at 6pm when dinner guests are arriving. I was surprised at how deep the pool is -- I'm kinda short but I had to be at one end of the pool to stand up in it. Might be noteworthy for families with small children who aren't strong swimmers.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. It's quiet and beautiful, and just a short drive from Cane Garden Bay if you're in the mood for more activity.

Room Tip: Unit 3 (2-bedroom) has a very long balcony with terrific views toward Long Bay and also of sunsets o...

Stayed at the Heritage Inn for our first time in late April. We had considered Long Bay, Myett's, private villas, and even Leverick Bay on VG but we chose the HI because of the consistent reviews about the views and the staff and we were very happy with our choice.

We were in room 5, a one-bedroom lower unit closer to the parking lot end. The other end of the hotel is preferred for more quiet but we had no problems with noise at all. You can occasionally hear squealing tires from cars going around the switchback (curve) just above the hotel but not bothersome at all, especially at night with the AC on. It was actually more of a fun laugh for us when we heard that. The room is very adequate and very clean with plenty of room and everything you need to eat there if you'd like. The rooms are not newly remodeled and there are some cosmetic signs of wear or age, but definitely nothing of any concern. The rooms are brightly painted and are very nice. The hot water was great the 6 days we were there, and the towels were so soft and the soaps very nice. The bed was very comfy, the AC worked perfectly, and we slept well. WIFI worked well.

We ate breakfast on the balcony overlooking the nice pool and enjoying the unbeatable view of Carrot and Long Bays, along with Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay. We often enjoyed lunch there as well because of that beautiful panoramic view. You also have plenty of ice available at the bar, and a nice cold, cold mini refrig in the kitchen as well as microwave, stove top, blender, coffeemaker, toaster and anything else you might need. A small TV in the living room had more channels than we needed. The decor is comparable to other hotels on Tortola but these one-bedroom suites are roomier. The two-bedroom units on the 2nd floor are even more spacious.

The food at Bananakeet is great, the happy hours and sunset shots are fun, and as stated several times the view is spectacular! We've seen many, many unbelievable views from various spots in the BVI but the Windy Hill/Bananakeet view is gorgeous in the morning and the sunsets - wow! I also took the time to get some fun videos of cruise ship passengers holding on to an open-air safari taxi for dear life as it went up and around the switchbacks - funny!

Chris and Merlyn are really unbelievable; they go way out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable. We felt like we were leaving old friends when we left the Heritage. Chris is such a down to earth person and is so comfortable to talk to. And Merlyn is wonderful and really helps you feel like you belong here. And then there's Bonkey - he's a great guy who I wish we had spent more time talking to. His daughter Violet (Chicken!) is an excellent bartender and makes a mean Bananakeet and black Russian! We were lucky enough to hear Rubin Chinnery one evening at the Bananakeet (don't miss him) and Chicken made sure we were taken care of. We had a chance to meet up with Chris and Bonkey on STT for cocktails the following week and that was a real treat for my wife and I! Just a great couple and so down to earth. It's obvious why the Heritage enjoys so many repeat couples and families year after year with this friendly, down to earth atmosphere and wonderful sunsets to boot!

We've enjoyed staying at Myett's with Val and being close to Stanley's and other beach bars and restaurants. But we will return to the Heritage Inn again because it's just a special place. The location is also prime for us - a short drive to Cane Garden Bay in one direction, and a short drive to Sebastian's for a great dinner and sunset, and Long Bay and Smuggler's Cove are just beyond (Sugar Mill and Bomba's are on the way to Sebastian's). And the sunset view really is spectacular - the motto "the higher you get the better the view" is true. But in this case it's the people that make the place, and the view and food and happy hour are just a great bonus! My wife always said she didn't really care about returning to Tortola as much as other destinations, but she is now OK with it after staying at the HI and we will be back sooner this time!

Thanks Chris, Merlyn, Bonkey, and Chicken for a very enjoyable stay, and we will see you next trip - have a great summer!

You know what... we cant thank you enough for your perspective on your stay with us here at the Heritage Inn!! Im hoping no one thinks that we paid you for such an honest, kind, detailed and 'fact of the matter' review!!
The truth however is... that you two were the perfect, most loving, fun and 'island style' laid back addition to our family!! It is always such a great pleasure to accommodate lovely folks like yourselves! We are so glad to have met you as well as had the opportunity to play together in St. T too!
We are hoping to see you sooner than later!!
Thank you again for your reviews!

We researched all the hotels on Tortola before deciding that Heritage would be our final few days getting back our land legs before going home. First, the staff during the reservation process were super! Second, the Inn is set high on the hillside, so don't expect a walk out to the ocean - but the view of YVD was simply beyond beautiful. When on BVI, we did not intend on spending any real time in our room, so the lack of TV and the lack of air in the main room was not a problem for us. Each bedroom had an air conditioner, so sleeping was not any problem. The restaurant was excellent and we were blessed with two incredible sunsets and they offer a free shot of a rum drink to celebrate the sun set. The bathrooms were clean. We did have some ants in the kitchen in the morning, but a little clean up and we were fine. The office helped arrange a taxi driver that we could trust for our trip to the national park and sopers hole. The pool was being converted to a salt water pool, so we did not take advantage of that (spent 8 days in the salt water and ready for a break) It is a 45 minute trip to the airport on Beef Island, so make sure to leave time and $$ for taxi trip back. Overall a very nice last couple days!

Room Tip: Just ask.

This is not the place to stay.. got there late. Some man came down and gave us a key. We walked into a real dump. Big gaps under front door way. Large enough for a good size rodent to get under. Water restriction notices on backs of bathroom door.. no a/c in living area, notice to keep bedroom doors closed while a/c running.. run down appliances. T.V was old and very small.. all furniture was old and smelled musty. No managers in office in the morning or even after 9 a,m. The took over 1000.00 dollars for 1 night stay as we left the next morning. We offered to pay them the deposit and call it even but they put through the rest of the charges. Have tried to work this out with them but they just don't want to give back the money. I have never endured such a awful night and if I had any idea that this was what we would have been getting would never have booked it. What you see on their web site and read about is not the truth. This is the truth.

Most definitely ISLAND LIFE isnt for everyone! Most folks appreciate the energy conscious and limited resource mentality of the 'islands'. Meanwhile this party arrived at 10pm were greeted and shown to their suite, as well as offered a cocktail at this late hour. The following morning they had packed up and in a taxi ready to leave prior to 9am without any formal complaints and waited until 4 months down the road to bring any complaints to the table. The complaints are geared toward personal standards & conservation. There are gentle reminders in the suites with regards to the water usage and conserving electricity, yes, however one can always use their own discretion. This is very unfortunate for this party but policy states no refunds less than 30 days prior to stay.
Even when they were departing they were greeted by staff and still were no constructive complaints aside from that they were not happy here. These complaints are over-exaggerated. The property consistently receives feedback on their true advertising, their cleanliness and kindness offered by the staff.

Views: During our first stay we stayed in a 1 bedroom, this time we stayed in a 2 bedroom unit. The elevated position of the 2 bedroom, the corner angle and generous length of the balcony provided a much more expansive view. Wow! Breakfast and dinners on the balcony and the sunsets...amazing! We had just arrived from Jost Van Dyke and thought it was so cool that we could see JVD directly to the right of the balcony, Sandy Spit..everything was very clear. We could even trace the latter half of our journey from White Bay to the Bubbly Pool. Long Bay is directly across from us and we could see our path to Smugglers Cove in the distance. Just beautiful.

Staff: For months I had communicated with Chris and Merlyn by email and phone and they were willing to accommodate my requests and answer my questions. As soon as we arrived there were hugs all around....both Chris and Merlyn are the best. I needed a few toiletries during the trip and without thinking twice Chris went to her room and gave me some from her personal stash to hold me over until I made it to the store. One morning we were headed out to the beach and she handed us a few apples from her bag. They came in handy midday after so much sun and sea. Chris and Merlyn definitely provided personable service and care you don't find everywhere.

Rooms: The suites are very spacious. I like that each has a living/lounge area with a couch in front of the balcony aside from the bedroom so you can enjoy the view from indoors as well and have a common space without the bed. This was also the case with the 1 bedroom. With the 2 bedroom there was truly a great deal of space which was a nice treat for us. We spent time lounging on the couches where you can still see the view, eating at the breakfast bar (view is still there) then on the balcony. Even in the bedroom we had the same view that we did on the balcony and could enjoy it while chatting. I like the decor: simple and colorful. The beds are also very comfortable. The soaps, lotions etc are really nice. Water piping hot.

I saw a negative review about how the kitchen isn't a recent remodel, about some rust coloring in the bathroom and the weak a/c. Its true, the kitchen wasnt built recently but its perfectly functional and wasn't an eyesore for me. It was nice to have a fully functioning kitchen as food on island can be expensive. We shopped at Riteway and had gourmet cheeses, meats, wine etc on the balcony and prepared lunches for the beach. It was great. I did see a tiny bit rust coloring in the shower but it is not dirt or grime. The rooms are spotless! These things can happen with metal fixtures close to sea water. The a/c isnt strong- its more like a fan. There is a note that explains this and we slept comfortably.

If I had to make a suggestion, I would suggest sealing the windows further (a few mosquitos came in through the cracks and gaps in the windows). HOWEVER I researched accommodations all over the island and the rates are VERY reasonable for the pool access, top rated restaurant on site, beautiful views, suite with full kitchen and living room, prime location (a hop away from CGB, Bomba, Sebastians, West End etc) good service, clean rooms, and an overall great stay provided. The BVIs are more expensive that many other islands, so the accommodations must be compared with others on the island. Most accommodations in a similar price range on Tortola have similar decor etc - but are not suites with kitchen and living room and either sans a pool or restaurant ....not to mention the incredible view. We think Heritage is wonderful and that the fair price is in consideration of some of the issues mentioned, but if you will be put off, simply book elsewhere. There definitely isn't a shortage of luxury options on the island.

Bananakeet: Delicious! And a great way to enjoy the views if you are not staying there. We loved the seared tuna. The jerk pork was savory but not "true jerk"...maybe it should have a different name? The chocolate mousse was divine.

Thanks for your hospitality Chris and Merlyn. We had a wonderful time and can not wait to return! Can't get that view off of my mind.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Heritage Inn is just what you want if you are looking for the total getaway. The Inn is located on the hilltop of a sleepy village: Carrot Bay, on the north side of Tortola. These comfortable apartments offer probably the most breathtaking views on the island: "voted Best sunset view in the BVI!" 180 degrees east and west and overlooking Jost Van Dyke, Sandy & Green Cays and three Tortola bays. This locally owned inn is quaint and quiet. Each suite has a private view-facing balcony and is furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, living room and AC king-size bed in bedrooms. Three suites have two bedrooms for family or friendly vacationers. Six, clean and comfortable, one bedroom suites also offer enough space to just forget your cares and hang out for a week. The views are so beautiful that most guests just "gape" for the first few days. In the summer the sun sets directly over the water. It is so beautiful that the locals go up for sunset cocktails at the BananaKeet Cafe on the poolside veranda to watch the sun setting over the awesome horizon. It's no wonder the slogan reads... the Higher you Get... the Better the Views!! ... more   less
