“Nanny Cay Hotel & Marina”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

Pleased to spend 4 comfortable nights at the Nanny Cay Hotel. Not a new property, but large accommodation with two comfortable beds, nice little porch, good bathroom & very serviceable kitchenette., The weather was great, the beach & pool welcome and the on-site restaurant "Peg Legs" and beach bar were great. Don't miss the Fri. night beach party.

The sail boats, yachts, & mega yachts are amazing! The on-site laundry is very busy, but can be accessed for self service (a bit of a waiting game) or wash/dry/fold service available with the attendant.

Nice little snack bar/pub included in the area of shops. There is a dive shop and all things needed for nautical types to plan, chart, provision or hire a captain and a vessel.

I Loved It!! Thankyou Miles and Lisa!

We came in two nights early to pick up a charter out of Nanny Cay and what a nightmare !!! The staff is almost hostile and the rooms had cold showers. There was a loud racket right outside our rooms both mornings and guess who the culprits were-HOTEL EMPLOYEES.

I was afriad to stand in the showers without sandals and the front desk was unresponsive to our oblections to the cold showers. We were given some explanation "you had to let the water run for a bit" before it got warm" but it never seemed to work. I could go on and on and discuss their "restuarant"
but I would only be re-living a big mistake.

I can only say "we got what we paid paid for" and the place should have been demolished decades ago.

The prices were attractive and I should have known better...my bad.

Room Tip: There are no "good rooms" in this dump.

This resort as all your basic needs, the pool is clean and the beach is 50 yrds away, a couple of nice bars, one on the complex which is the beach bar and one near the entrance to the complex which is the spots bar, locals use this for food as well so it can be bad, the resturant on the complex is nice but a little pricey. Theres a great, friendly and quality price mini resturant n the mariner, i had a cooked breakfast every morning with great coffee.
This hotel is not a holiday hotel but grear for a stop over for a couple of days. The rooms are basic but very clean, if you are staying any longer you need a vehicle to get around, road town approx 6 km away.
Overall a great ireland with some fantastic beaches, if you get the chance virgin gorda (the rock) is a dream

Room Tip: Upper floor, you get better tv signal and good wifi

Stayed here twice in 2013. Once to buy a boat and once to go sailing. Poor to bad both times. 1st time we did not get the room we booked and despite promises they never moved us. Second time, they initially overcharged us and it took a good while to get fixed. Very slow check in and check out. The rooms are basic and both times needed repairs. The sink plumbing in the entire "resort" is improperly installed (sink handles and spigots are not attached to the sinks). The 2nd time the AC rattled, until I "fixed" it by wedging a wad of toilet paper against the vent. Neither room had working windows, nor a fan in the shower. Hot water was variable. The 2nd time the toilet ran constantly and we had to remove the top of the tank and fix the float valve. Each stay we reported the problems and even with 3-4 day stays nothing was fixed.

Once, I went to use the marina showers (free to marina customers) and found the only one that was available with a toilet full of feces spilling onto the floor.

There are chickens and roosters wandering around outside and the roosters start to crow at 4:00am. There are feral cats everywhere, which is probably good because cats catch the cock-roaches that wander the sidewalks.

Nanny Cay is far from town. If you have a car you can drive to restaurants but the traffic can be horrendous if a cruise ship is in town. Other drivers are aggressive and rude and tailgating is epidemic. If you get lucky you will have another out of town driver behind you instead of a local.

Nanny Cay claims to have a grocery store for yacht provisioning and this is just a flat out lie. Its actually a tiny mini-mart, with a very limited selection and everything is ridiculously overpriced. Forget about buying food for a cruise. You must drive through Roadtown to the new RiteWay supermarket. There are other large food stores but many of them do not mark prices on most items so you have to either guess at the price or stack items in your cart and then go to the isle that has a price scanner to see what the cost will be.

Nanny Cay also advertises the Genaker Cafe. Forget about eating here. The service is terrible and the food not much better. If any locals are eating there you will be ignored while the staff caters to the people they know. We gave up trying to get food there.

Peg Legs Restaurant is good, but a bit pricey. The service there is good and the staff is friendly.

If you are going to stay at Nanny Cay more than one or two nights, you need a car.

We kept our boat on the land for hurricane season. It is very expensive. Someone went into our boat and stole items. We know of two other yachts that also had this happen. We reported the loss to the marina management and asked for help but never even received a response.

We had work done at the boatyard by one of the approved contractors, supposedly supervised by the yacht "manager" we hired. They violated our specific, written instructions and the work was done wrong and we had to take the boat to another marina for haul out and repair. This took one week off our month of cruising and will cost us thousands to repair.

Our stay in the water at the marina was marred by the bad electrical system on the docks. The voltage varied so much our charging system only worked late at night when the voltage drop was not as bad. Another boat owner told us their air conditioning system was destroyed by the voltage drops. Despite the inadequate electrical system, we were charged $35.00 per day for electricity. We spent two days trouble-shooting our battery charger/inverter before we discovered it was working perfectly, protecting our boat from the voltage drops.

On the day of our launch the marina still had not confirmed that we could rent a slip while we prepared the boat for cruising. They told us the marina was full due to arrival of a rally. But during our entire three night stay at the dock there were always numerous empty slips.

Fuel at the fuel dock is priced way, way past reasonable. But the staff at the fuel dock was friendly and helpful.

The attitude at Nanny Cay is not to treat people as customers. You are treated as a tourist, and tolerated as long as you are spending money without complaining. You always sense that they want you there to spend money and then leave.

When we reported our experiences to other cruisers we met in the Virgin Islands, the common response was, "Remember, you don't have to be good to be 'Best on the Island, Mon'."

If you are going to the BVI stay at Nanny Cay only if you have no other choice. Do not have work done on your boat unless you can be there to personally supervise.

Tortola is an island without Branded hotels and most people are only staying one night before chartering a boat or after returning a boat and so this very pleasant hotel is basic by North American Standards but perfectly by most Caribbean standards with en-suite shower, mini kitchen (wet bar) and free wireless internet plus comfortable bed and a porch-balcony over looking a grassed garden.

Within the grounds are the following sailing club restaurant for fancy dinning, small shop, gift shops and a burger ( more down to earth bar but closes by 9pm) Surrounding area has restaurants see later review.

I always stay here when I visit the island on business and hence stay for a week or more at a time and so this a good place to work in the evening as it is very quiet, while a little out of town for walking and therefore a car is needed.

I can recommend this place for both one nighters and as well people who want a location to explore Tortola without the noise of normal tourist hotels or are visiting on a business trip and need to work.

Tortola is expensive to buy your food so bring basics with you. Local off location restaurants while appear a little rough offer good value and remember this the caribbean so local are friendly.

Room Tip: Choose a room set back from the dock if you are staying for several nights as holiday makers on the...

This resort is fine enough for the basics, but it's really pretty far from downtown and not within walking distance. Especially since there aren't any sidewalks.
The Nanny Cay has a small outside near the beach but the waitress wasn't the most friendly person going and the bar closes pretty early.
The rooms are pretty basic and if you have Verizon as your cell carrier, be prepared for spotty coverage everywhere.
The dining options on the resort consist of one restaurant and another one that's near the marina. However it has limited hours and again, the wait staff move at their own speed.
The beach and pool are pretty well maintained, but you need your own beach towels and there lounge chairs don't appear to have ever been cleaned.
The bottom line here is that place will do if there are no other options or you enjoy sitting around in the evening in absolute silence,

We had to get our sailboat fixed and spent the night. It's off season so the rate was only $115! Everyone was so kind, quiet, reserved but also witty, efficient. Couldn't figure out the TV, coffee maker and the ice machine. Immediately a staff person helped us...

Room was very quiet, ocean view. The AC was powerful. Other hotels charge for bottled water...two free cold ones in the refrigerator!

The grounds are clean, well manicured. If you are expecting a sandy white beach don't come here. This is a working marina, not a pampering spa for rich people. It has everything a boater needs.

Great roti at their restaurant. Pool lovely.

It was just so relaxing....and the boat was fixed...
