Moorings Mariner Inn Hotel
Ranked #5 of 13 Hotels in Road Town
Reviewed 12 September 2011

We stayed at the Mariner Inn/Moorings the night prior to picking up our bareboat charter at the Moorings. We were picked up promptly at the ferry landing and brought right to the hotel. The checkin staff were delightful. Not too helpful about general activities around the island, ferry schedules, etc, but nice. Our room was stunningly and luxuriously decorated but had some physical problems. The lock on the balcony sliding glass door was broken and the safe lock was broken. The manager came up after a call down (we waited for a while) and he could not fix either so they switched our room. The switch was tough after a long day of travel but I was happy that they offered it since security is important to my husband. The food was pretty good at the main restaurant but they are not too flexible about leaving out the wonderful flavors of the islands for kids who like things simple...for instance, making plain chicken or eggs rather than West Indian fare. The kids did use the pool and we had to be quiet because it is right next to the bar (and they inadvertently splashed a woman who had sat with her laptop next to the pool). I got the impression that the pool is rarely used.

Overall, a pleasant enough experience. The price was quite high but I believe that even in shoulder season we are paying for the convenience to be at the marina. There are offsite hotels that would offer a better bargain.

We recently stayed here for two nights. The first night was prior to getting our sailboat and the second was for the night we returned and turned the boat in. Now for the review:

The first night we arrived late and were really looking forward to something to eat and some sleep. The driver who picked us up at the airport made sure we called ahead and ordered pizza which was a great call.

Our room was a Motel 6 quality room at a much higher then Motel 6 price. However, it seemed clean and the air conditioning worked great. We had two twin beds in the room and they were ok. In the morning when we used the shower there was a lot of brown water. The front desk clerk said the water just needed to run for a bit, there were two of us with two showers and the water was still brown at the end of the second.

Over all it was fine as we were getting our boat the next morning and the hotel was not really part of our trip. Come to find out there are two parts to this hotel, a newly renovated area and the old building. We also found out you could upgrade to a new room for $25. We upgraded for our return night and was pleasantly surprised.

The room was completely upgraded and appeared to be more adequate for what we paid. A couple things we noticed that were kind of bummer. It was really hard to control the water temp for the shower and every time you flushed water would come out the bottom of the toilet.

If you are planning on staying here be sure to upgrade to one of the newer rooms. You will be much happier you did. If you eat at Charlies the pizza is good and stay away from the hamburger. For breakfast the buffet is a good option.

The Moorings and the hotel are actually two separate companies and the Moorings can't be blamed for the hotels shortcomings. The staff for both of them were great and very helpful. We had a great vacation and am very happy I went.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for one of the new rooms!

The Moorings-Mariner Inn has been highly recommended by myself to all my family, friends and business partners that wish to visit or work in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It is ideal for those travelers who are staying in town for several weeks and need a centrally-located residence within walking distance of the downtown business area. The rooms are extremely comfortable and the ocean view apartments are a great option. The hotel is located in a quiet, highly trained and courteous staff and the general manager is attentive to the needs of the people staying there.

We stayed for 4 nights. We had a new room with 2 queen beds & a single. The room was lovely, spacious and very clean. The bathroom was also very large. We found it relaxing looking at the water view (yachts in foreground). We could see the sea from the bath, bedroom or balcony! Very nice!
We found the Mariner restaurant staff to be very friendly and helpful - they went out of their way to cater for the children offering meals they thought the children may like and helpful suggestions - "no problem". The Chef at Charlies was also willing to adapt meals from the adult menu - making them "plainer and smaller" for our young son, which was helpful as the adults were keen to try the food at Charlies.
Overall we found that the staff throughout the hotel all tried hard and when things didn't go quite right they did their best to rectify any problems.

Room Tip: Newer rooms with a sea view.

When booking a bareback boat with Moorings and paying the price that you pay, I would have expected better accommodations the night before we sailed. The Mariner Inn was disgusting- the rooms are old, the bathroom was filthy and by far the worst- brown water came out of the sink! We waited to take our morning showers until AFTER we were on the boat the next day. The stay at Mariner Inn was worse than a stay at a Motel 6 but with the price of resort! The ONLY positive I can give this place is the convenience to the Moorings office- which is the only reason this establishment is still in business.

While the Moorings, I am told is the best, You still need to check your equipment. Our radio didn't work very well, so I suggest getting a phone for back up $25 dollar rental fee on the dock and then cost of card came in handy to get in touch with different marinas when radio not working and luckily did not have any emergencies to speak off. However the pull came of the outboard motor on our dinghy. So we had to row our boat! We rented a 41.5 Sailboat not really fit for the 7 of us. Yes I did say 7.... 4 would be perfect 5 tolerable. Battery was always low and I don't believe the toilets were working as they should be. One towel per person for 7 days for both beach and shower doesn't work for me and neither do flat pillows..... Can't accuse me of being a "Ritz Carlton" girl because I was the only one who slept on deck the entire time so I consider the rest of the crew "Landlubbers". It was a great experience and the crew at the moorings did a wonderful job of responding to our requests. I just feel and perhaps that was our fault things should have been looked at carefully before we left.

Room Tip: Check at the Boat and Dinghy before you leave!
