One of the best accommodations I've ever had. Dinner was very good and fairly priced. Pamela, the host, took care of everything (laundry, car rental, boat trip). Whole staff was very helpful. Room was always clean and very well equiped. The beach is right in front of the door, beautiful environment. You can relax and recover for sure at this place.

We stayed for 9 days at the Fort Recovery during the first week of August. Our stay was more or less perfect.
Our experience starts earlier this year when I started decided where we would stay on Tortolla. Pamelah, who well, is in charge of everything, was so good and patient with me, answering my e-mails in a timely fashion, giving me quotes for different package deals. We ended up getting all our full breakfasts and 4 dinners here, a snorkeling trip, car, cell phone rental and a one bedroom unit for myself, my husband and our two boys ages 11 and 15.
This unit is perfect for a family with two kids. They put in two rollaways for the boys, it had a fridge, microwave, sink and coffee maker as well as dishes and the bedroom had an A/C but because of the layout of hte place it kept everything really cool. From the back terrace you step onto the sand and onto the beach - sunset from there is awesome!! We had enough room and some to spare. They even provide you with coolers to take on the road and beach towels.
Can't beat the location - it's not in Roadtown so it's secluded, yet it's a 15 minute drive at sea level to town (which is not common)
As I said, Pamelah made everything perfect. She knows everything, organizies. My husband had a toothache - she recommended a dentist, told him where he is. Knows how to get anywhere on the island. She gave us a cellphone, recharged the card whenever we needed it. We had already arranged our tours and had a car, but I saw her every morning talking with guests about their taxi, tour so she does that too. When I had ear problems after SCUBA she recommended a medication and told us where the pharmacy is. She also does their yoga classes. The list goes on ....

FOOD:
We come from California that has incredible restaurants so we trying new and great food is not part of our experience. I want the food to be safe, healthy, and someone else to cook it and clean it. I'm not going to lie, the food back home is better and cheaper. On the BVI, the best food that we had was at the Fort Recovery Resort. Their shrimp roti was awesome, as well as the fish and their daily soup. And the portions were huge so we would save the leftovers, supplmement it with a little from the corner grocery store and we had the next days dinner, so that covered dinner for an additional 4 days. We woudl heat it up and take it to the dock at sunset where there are picnic tables for an awesome view!! The additional day we went to the Jolly Roger and ate by the water - it was really nice and decently priced for a tourist trap.
There is a grocery store about 2 minutes by car that is small but has lots of lunch foods. We had a full breakfast each day at the hotel - it was delicious, I highly recommend their pancakes. My only complaint was the service was really slow at breakfast, but we found that if we write down our order and give it to the server right when we came in to the dining terrace it sped things up enough.
The selection of desserts at dinner was limited to key lime pie most of the time, but we found a fantastic ice cream place in Roadtown called La Dolce Vita - don't miss it - we went everyday. They make their own gelato and it's comparable to anything I've eaten in Italy and have an enormous selection of flavors.
The snorkel trip with Fort Recovery was a lot of fun - they take you to some great places. The Willie - T lunch however was probably the lowpoint of the entire trip - first of all, they messed up our order. We had ordered conch fritters as one of our lunches and didn't tell us until the rest of our lunch was ready and we had been waiting on the boat/restaurant for about 15 minutes. The burgers we had were passable. My boys had chicken ad both complained of stomach pains the next day. Also, decor is a bit inappropriate for kids, especially a photoalbum they have of various parties they've had. I woudl've prefered to have a picnic lunch on the beach.

BEACHES:
Every guide book I've read tellsyou to go to Smugglers Cove for great snorkeling. The road to the beach there is not as bad as they say but the beach is not that great. EAch day we went we encountered waves; same with Long Bay. Snorkeling was nice but apparently a lot of the coral was destroyed recently by a hurricane.
Cane Garden Bay is as beautiful as they describe - amazing sand, beautiful, warm, calm water, the perfect Carribean Beach. Food stands, drinks, water sports, beach chairs. We were there in off-season so it wasn't crowded it all but I've heard it can be when cruise ships are around.
Brewers Bay is probably the best snorkeling I've ever had, especially from a beach. SCUBA divers even come here. We went there four times. It's tucked away in a cove. Has nice sand, and the water initially is all sandy-bottom so it's good for playing in the water and for entering in. But, then when you get closer to the rocks the coral begins and the reef extends out from the rocks parallel to the shore. What a reef!!! Huge schools of silversides, giant parrot fish, trumpet fish, trunk fish, sting rays, squids (not just one but hundreds), beautiful coral!!! As you float in the water and look up there are pelicans diving in catching fish for a fun show!! You can park your car right close to the sand so you can keep an eye on it, there are trees for shade, you can rent beach chairs and there's a bar/grill in case you didn't bring enough food and it also has a bathroom. What more can you want !!!!
SCUBA:
We did our open water portion of our SCUBA certification here with Blue Water Divers and they were awesome - we had an instructor just for the four of us and he was great and very patient to all of us, from myself, a middle-aged mom, to my young 11 year old son.
Jost Van Dyke:
The other tour we went on was to Jost Van Dyke. We went with Snorkel BVI and tour was fantstic. We were the only ones on the tour that day so he basically did what we wanted; he even picked us up from the Fort Recovery dock. We spend more time on Sandy Cay than any of the other tours there - this place is good snorkeling and absolutely cute! Then went to Bubbly Pool which unfortunately wasn't that bubbly in the summer, but it was still fun and the walk there is beautifull. Then we hung out at White Bay!!

We also went to Sage Mountain. We've seen the rainforests in Costa Rica and while it's not as good as those, it still is an amazing rainforest with lush vegetation and a nice, pleasant, easy walk. The botanical gardens were great and an amazing oasis in the middle of town - don't miss it!! Another thing I recommended that is barely listed in any guidebook is a mangrove walk a few miles outside of town when going toward the airport. You enter the parking lot of the Center for Applied Marine studies, and just past the building on the left is a little trail that leads to a boardwalk that goes through the mangroves. They're still building it but it's a decent length adn absolutely beautiful.
One more thing that no review about Tortola shoudl be without is a comment about the roads. The island is mountainous and roads are expensive, so instead of making roads that slowly wind up the mountain, they simply go up & over. It's quite an experience and fun after the first few times when you realize that the cars can make it over!!
and ... the evening after we finished our SCUBA certification we asked to have dinner served on the dock as a special treat - what a treat it was!!! They would bring each course in separately, service was incredible and was well worth the extra charge.

The staff is very attentive, helpful and kind. The rooms are immaculate -- not a speck of dirt. And it is (as another reviewer described it), indeed, very unpretentious. Our meals at the resort were tasty and quite reasonably priced. It is certainly one of, if not THE BEST property on the island. The sea is literally right outside your door, and it's very tranquil. At one point, we had the entire resort to ourselves! We have become used to a more "touristy" type of experience...with cute little shops, high thread count sheets, plush lounge chairs, designer toiletry items and hip, soft music playing by the pool. So, we had to adjust ourselves. This is simple living. Now, I'm not saying I don't still enjoy those things. But this was a different experience. The whole island is extremely laid back. It's really quite beautiful, and if you are looking for an adorable cottage right on the ocean, with very little reminders of the bustle you left behind, this is for you. Think of it like staying at your friend's place, rather than a hotel.

This was our first trip to a "remote" island resort and we had no idea or expectation of what we would find. This turned out to be one of the BEST vacations that we've taken in years. Fort Recovery's package included everything we needed for our stay, meals, car, spa, snorkeling trip, cell phone. Eating all our meals on the porch surrounding the dining hall added to the exotic and rustic ambiance. Driving around the island and across the mountain was very exciting (my wife might say otherwise, however)! We ventured out to other islands, once by ferry, and once on a rented sailboat - each trip offerred something a little different to see. While the weather was hot and humid, the constant trade wind breeze kept us comfortable. Island time is the order of the day; take off your watch, leave the laptop at home. This place is a keeper! We will definitly return.

Anita MacShane, on-site owner of Fort Recovery at the west end of Tortola, along with her extended family and staff, have created an understated haven of unpretentious but deeply comforting hospitality, service and accommodation. Our villa looked out over the bay to St. John’s and the soft sound of the water caressing the beach greeted us each morning and lulled us to sleep each night after a hard day of reading and relaxing. While there’s no dearth of dining, nightlife and water activity (snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, sailboarding, catamaran touring) – and the well-connected Fort Recovery crew can arrange anything for you – I barely left the comfy sofa on the front deck of our villa. Days filled with reading were gently interrupted by early morning coffee on the beach, swim breaks, yoga with Pamelah on the dock at sunset, an amazing salt scrub massage by Ivette that left my skin singing – and dinner. What a flat word for such a fabulous experience. After the first evening’s Caribbean-spiced mahi mahi, I looked forward to the Chef’s perfectly prepared salmon, swordfish, shrimp jambalaya, and great steaks, accompanied by pumpkin, pea or broccoli soup. Reading 8 books in 8 days may not be everyone’s idea of a vacation, but I’m still floating in the benefits. Try a virtual visit at www.fortrecovery.com.

We booked our stay for a celebration based exclusively on the information on the website and the telephone calls that followed. We could not have made a luckier leap of faith. Accomodations and setting were perfect.

This is the 4th time we've stayed at Fort Recovery and each time we remember why we come back....First of all, the owner Anita and her staff, Pamelah, Tanya and Matt are like family to us. Always smiles on their faces and anxious to help in any way. Second, the villas are beautifully decorated with the bedrooms air conditioned (so welcomed when you come out of the hot BVI sun). You walk right off your porch and right into the beautiful Caribbean waters and see the most outrageous scenery...the tall mountains of Tortola and across the water to St. John. When you've had enough of the beach, there is a lovely chlorine pool surrounded by spectacular palm trees. In the area in front of the main office, there is a feel that you are truly in the jungle as there is no concrete or pavement in that particular area. Love everything about Ft. Recovery...and so will you. Captain Lucky & Linny Price, Landing NJ and PSL, FL
