If you are looking for a place to sleep before you embark on a sailing vacation out of Road Town, this is the place! Our extended family of ten stayed at Hummingbird House for one night. After long flights from various locations, we enjoyed that fact that the 10 of us had upwittingly taken up all the rooms which meant we had this hillside B&B to ourselves. After an orientation by owner Yvonne, we helped ourselves to the honor bar, floated in the small pool, and marveled at our luck of finding this gem. The room rate is much better than most other accommodations on the island and the ambiance is warm and inviting.

Pros -
1. A very nice poolside breakfast of a wide selection from omelettes to hash and poached eggs is included in the price of your room.
2. Roomy rooms with lots of sitting space.
3. Great deck area around a small pool that includes a bay view.
4. The "welcome team" of several cats complete the island feel.

Cons -
1. If you choose to run the AC, there's a $20 service fee. This is not unusual in some island location, however, it would be great to understand this charge before the bill comes. Granted, there is a small sign posted in the room, but weary travelers arriving in the night following a 16 hour travel day can easily miss this. No one in our party read the posting in their rooms so this came as a surprise.
2. Hummingbird can hold up to 14, I believe, but any guests over 8 are charged $30 per guest. Given that breakfast is included, an additional charge is reasonable, but $30 is a bit steep.
3. After our long travel day, we were in need of a good meal. Yvonne did us a favor by calling the private restaurant just across the way from Hummingbird to see if it would serve us a late dinner even though a large private party had just ended there. They allowed us over, but after a very long wait for food , we were served some very strange concontions that were pricey for the quality. Perhaps the real chef had left and the wait team and bartender were doing the cooking. That would explain the 20 minute wait for a glass of wine and the hour wait for a beginning salad. Strange. Convenient, though! Stick to the fish and chips and you'll be fine.

Final Comment:
Don't let the few "cons" keep you from staying at Hummingbird. We loved and will definitely stay here on any trips back to Road Town whether we are here for one night or several nights. If you want to stay on the beach, this is not the place. If you want a very comfortable, clean, and inviting accommodation, you'll be very happy with your choice to stay here.

We stayed at the Hummingbird House on March 20th, 2008. Our original plans were to stay there on the 19th and 20th. Our flights were totally messed up and we arrived a day late after an over night in Boston (from LAX).

We called the owner to let her know our dilemma. Nothing we could do about it....

Once we showed up (we had been in transit for 30 hours with about 3 hours of sleep), we were not greeted by a warm or even pleasant proprietor. She was extremely annoyed and the very first thing out of her mouth was that "I did not like kids". (I booked this place months ago and was very up front about my 6 & 9 year old boys traveling with us). She then started to point out all of the places the kids were NOT ALLOWED, which was most of the place. She also screamed at them several times for trying to pet the many dogs and "feral" cats on the property (her words, not mine). She had a ton of nick-knacks all over the place, very cluttered and messy looking.

We checked into our room, dropped off our bags and left. We decided to walk down to the Moorings complex to check things out and grab a late lunch. We stayed as long as we could so we could. We finally went back to our place, took a short nap and got ready for dinner. Again, when we left for dinner, the kids were screamed at again for trying to pet the animals.

We arrived back and went straight to bed. My husband visited with the other guests in the courtyard and had a nice time.

The next morning, I slept in with the kids but my husband went out for breakfast. The owner was quite pleasant to the other guests but was rude and curt with my husband. Even one to the other guests commented on the difference in treatment. I finally ventured out to get a cup of self-service tea and she snapped at me, “Do you want breakfast?” I said No, Thank You, tea is fine. She stormed off. We checked out exactly on time and Moorings picked us up. My husband tried to negotiate a minor discount on our bill since we only stayed there one night, not two and my husband was the only one to have breakfast. She was charging us $30/per child/per night extra. She gave us a few dollars off the bill.

I would not recommend this place, especially if you have children. The owner was extremely rude to us and our children during our entire stay. We tried to be as nice and pleasant as we could and the kids stayed out of sight the entire time.

If you're in Road Town, you're probably on the way somewhere else. There's little reason to hang out in Road Town---it's not a great town. It's small, with no real beach, and with no real remarkable attractions. What Road Town has is a marina where charters can originate, and an airport close by.

So---if you must stay in Road Town, this is a nice option. This is a quiet place, kept up very well by the very nice owner who makes a good breakfast, and is extremely helpful. The surroundings and small pool and deck are pleasant. This is not the kind of place I would necessarily view as a destination, but would think it is a great place if you are on your way to one of the out islands or to a charter. It is also worth noting that it is a 10 minute walk or so along a busy street with limited sidewalk to the actual town, so this may not be to everyone's liking. If you wish to spend a few days in Tortola lazing by the beach, I'd look somewhere else---but if you have a car, and want to explore, this could be a good option.

We have been to Tortola 3 times and the Hummingbird House is by far our favorite place to stay. Yvonne makes a lovely breakfast and for the price this place can't be beat! We stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed every minute of our trip. We rented a car so that we could travel around to all of the beaches and the restaurants and Yvonne was happy to give us some suggestions. We stayed in the room with the king size bed and while not fancy, the room is very comfy and you have your own little deck with patio furniture to enjoy. There is also a tv with all of the cable channels and a refrigerator in your room. SInce we stayed for so many days we went to the grocery store and stocked up but you can also get snacks and drinks from the honor bar. We will definitely be back! Oh and she has free wireless internet around the pool which is good if you need to stay in touch with the real world :) One last suggestion, take the free ferry to Marina Cay for a day trip - the snorkeling at Diamond Reef (accessible by a kayak that you can rent for $15 from the on-site dive shop) is the best that we saw and Pusser's is a good place for lunch and drinks.

We stayed here before and after our Moorings charter. It is just across the street from the Moorings docks in a residential neighborhood, a 5 minute walk away. The street is lined with trees but the house is on a hill above the tree line so you have great views of the water. Yvonne has a lovely bar set up with tables next to a small plunge pool. The bar is self serve, just keep a talley of what you had and she adds it to the bill. There is a nice living area next to the bar with a tv and many books and magazines to look at. Our room was modest and clean with a television and a few fans. Be patient with the shower, the hot water is solar heated. There is AC available at an extra charge, we didn't need it at all.
Yvonne offers wonderfully prepared breakfasts in the morning. Its a great time to watch the feral cats and their antics by the pool. She has lovingly cared for these creatures, they won't get close to you but they still hang around.
The center of Road Town is only a 15 minute walk away and the area is very safe. We had no problems. Everyone we met was very cordial.
We loved the warm casual atmosphere at the Hummingbird, it's much better than a sterile hotel. We plan to stay here again.
