My husband and I stayed for a week at Frenchmans for a trip to celebrate his 40th birthday and it was really the perfect spot to do it. The staff, especially Michelle, are as great as everyone here has said--friendly, accomodating, full of useful info and tips, and happy to help.

The cottage was comfortable, with fantastic views and the grounds are just beautiful. We weren't looking for crowds or to meet other people, so the small boutique resort environment of Frenchmans was perfect. It often felt like we had the place to ourselves.

We also really enjoyed Tortola and the day trips Michelle helped us set up--ATVs on Jost Van Dyke and a day sail on Aristocat. Our one mistake was going to the Baths on Virgin Gorda when there were three cruise ships in port. It was a total zoo--we should have gone another time or just stayed holed up in the peace and quiet of Frenchmans!

Upon arriving at the resort after being stranded in the snow of Jan 10th 2011 and missing my flight and losing 2 days in this piece of Heaven on earth. I was greeted with not only the warmth of the sun but with a lady named Michelle that helps run this BEAUTIFUL Resort.. She is the warmest most kindest person I have met in a long time . The whole staff at Frenchmans are wonderful. They made our stay wonderful. My girlfriend and I travel alot and found ourselves very pampered and looked after, checked in on daily..making sure we were great and we felt very safe there, for we are two females that need to relax from our day to day stressful jobs. And at The Frenchmans we totally relaxed. The resort and Island is a great get away. We will return!

My wife and I stayed at Frenchman's Cay during the second week of our two week honeymoon in the BVI. We stayed Jan 3-8th in the Starfruit cottage. The cottage was fantastic, beautiful actually. We were on Virgin Gorda for 8 days prior staying in screened in cottage and it was a relief to get to Frenchmans and stay in a higher end accomodation. The screen/glass sliding door to the balcony was great and the air conditioned bedroom was quite nice. We had a very nice view of the Sir Francis Drake channel and the hills of Tortola. Our honeymoon package at Frenchmas was also very nice. We took advantage of the daysail to Norman Island on the Aristocat boat, drove some four-wheelers on Jost Van Dyke, had a night out at a four star Dove restaurant in Road Town and had a picnic lunch which we took over to Smugglers Cove....plus a car rental all included in the honeymoon package. Frenchman's Cay resort was beautifully landscaped and provided for everything that we wanted. Their beach is a little lacking but they make up for it with a man made tide pool. Great location the West End for shopping, dining out at Soper's Hole marina or taking a quick ride over to Carrot Bay, Cane Garden Bay, etc. We enjoyed our stay and would possibly consider going back for an anniversary. Tortola and Frenchmans Cay in particular is great for couples....if you go to the BVI with friends or family another resort or island may be better for you.

We believe this IS the nicest place in Tortola. However, Tortola itself is not a place we would recommend for a honeymoon (that's for another review though). Frenchmans was a LOVELY property and the layout of the rooms are amazing. I'll start with the 5 star pros: Perfect Kitchen, stocked with every appliance and tool we needed. Clean Rooms, THE BEST TOWELS, great products, beautifully decorated space with expensive high quality items, gorgeous views, private porch, great mattress, wonderful common area, great food, games, and drink sign out honor system. Fun pool and lounge chairs and our favorite thing to do was to kayak which was free and accessible at all times. Also, they had a WONDERFULLY kind and accommodating staff. Now to the tough parts: for a honeymoon in late June the house was too warm downstairs to really enjoy our time to the fullest in that area of our unit. When we arrived late in the evening, I had hoped that as we entered our suite we would feel cool air and be able to begin our honeymoon on a good note, but it was blisteringly hot and humid and with no AC downstairs, we began to feel a little down in the dumps about how the rest of our week might be, given that it was warm inside even at night. The kitchen would give off blasting heat if you cooked, etc. There is AC in the bedroom, but I believe AC needs to be installed in the whole townhouse. The only other drawback was that the steps. Although they were beautiful they felt very dangerous to us, as the AC would drip onto them and they were slippery, steep and made of hard stone. You had to be VERY careful coming down the stairs (the floors are stone as well...prob wouldn't be the best place to bring a small child). Also, as a side note the bed has a rough base that the corners were VERY easy to bump into. In fact I left with several bruises because of this, but I am not blaming Frenchmans, maybe I'm the only dummy who did this. Also, I am allergic to grass pollen and EACH day someone would be mowing the property while we were out and about... right outside of our windows or in the common area. Twice the mowers picked up a pebble which managed to hit me from "out of nowhere" with force (I was fine, but still kind of strange). When we mentioned my grass pollen allergy and asked if they could let us know when they would be mowing again so I could stay as far away as possible, they arranged for the mowers to stop and gave me a free in room massage for my inconvenience...Which was very kind! We were able to rent a car right through the front desk which was awesome. The views at Sunset were also ruggedly stunning. If they installed AC below we would certainly consider returning.

We recently returned from our trip to the BVI. We spent 10 days at Frenchmans on Tortola. The resort is actually located on a tiny island which is attached to Tortola by a small bridge. It's very close to the West End Ferry and Soper's Hole.

I have stayed in many upscale resorts but to me this place had everything we could ask for. Michelle was awesome. She coordinated everything for us prior to travel. She gave me advice regarding the ferry, set up a taxi to pick us up and bring us to the resort, set up a car rental (which they brought to us at the resort) and hooked us up with Captain Roy for a day trip beyond compare. She also helped with numerous small things throughout our stay including dinner recommendations, ideas for New Year's eve, etc. If you choose to stay here I would recommend that you take her suggestions because she didn't steer us wrong once. When Michelle isn't there, Chris is, and he was also very helpful.

On arrival there was a huge fruit basket, a bottle of wine and 2 large bottles of Fiji water in our cottage.

The cottages are 1 and 2 bedroom houses with full kitchens and 1 or 2 balconies which overlook the point of Frenchman's Cay. We stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage (Guava) for the first 6 nights and then we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom for the last 3 nights (Lime). We thought Guava was really beautiful until we moved to Lime. Lime was absolutely amazing. Both were clean and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes pans, etc. No coffee or tea supplied in Guava but there was tea and sugar when we moved into Lime. There is a coffee press so you can just buy some coffee at one of the stores on the island. The beds were clean and comfortable with lots of pillows. Bathrooms had shower, no tub, and there was really no vanity to speak of. But they were clean, nice water pressure, lots of hot water and nicely decorated. In Lime the lighting in the upstairs bathroom wasn't good.

There were 3 sets of decent snorkeling gear waiting for us in our room on arrival (2 adult and 1 child size). We were able to take these with us when we went on trips during the day. There were new beach towels every day even if we were unable to return the old ones to housekeeping before they cleaned. These little things made everything even better.

Our patios had the most amazing views (see the photos). There was powerful A/C in the bedrooms but since it was winter we rarely needed it (temps were in the upper 70s, low 80s). When we opened the patio doors the breeze was cool and kept the room in the low 70s. All the windows and doors had screens, although we did get some mosquito bites during our stay.

I had read extensively on tripadvisor about the various beaches and other resorts on Tortola while planning the trip. I had the impression that Smugglers, Long Bay and Cane Garden Bay would be the beaches we would spend time on. We spent the first day on our beach. When I say "our beach" that's what I mean. We were essentially alone on the entire beach. The snorkeling was very nice around the point. We saw a lot of fish (sargent majors, parrot fish, crabs, lizard fish, etc) and lots of brain and fan corals. The water was very flat and easy to snorkel in. There had been a storm 2 days before we arrived so the water was a little more choppy the first few days but even then my 8 yr old son was able to snorkle here. We found perfect shells and large pieces of coral on the beach every day too. The only negative is that the bar is not open during the mid day (not enough business to make it worthwhile). So no mixed drinks were available in the day time but you can get a beer, soda, juice etc.

We drove around the island on several days to see the other beaches. Long Bay and Smuggler's were crowded with people. The waves were breaking about waist high (it was winter). Snorkeling was impossible on those beaches. There was a protected area near Apple/Cane Garden that looked like it might be good for swimming and possibly snorkeling. But we found that our beach was the best so we didn't go back to try that one out.

The restaurant served breakfast daily (included with the room). The food was great. The chef, Paul, was very nice and willing to occasionally stray from the menu for our picky eater 8 yr old. Breakfast choices included Quiche, granola, omelets, banana pancakes (delicious), coconut french toast, etc. There were 3 choices daily. Everything was great. The Sunday brunch is normally $25 but only $10 if you're staying there and well worth it. It was 3 courses with a drink included. Enough food to last the entire day if you can eat it all.

We ate dinner at the restaurant once and had appetizers another night. The Blue Mussel Chowder was amazing! The only negative for us was that there were really no choices for kids who have a limited palate. We would have eaten there more if there had been something simple like penne with butter or a grilled cheese for our son to eat. The waitress who served us breakfast every day was very sweet and personable.

Housekeeping did a good job and they were willing to work around our schedule. We temporarily lost my husband's watch for a day. They were very concerned and helped us look for it. We eventually found it in our backpack.

There are a lot of stairs to get to and from the beach. For us this was no problem, but its important to know this if you have limited mobility. The location was otherwise absolutely perfect.

While we were there the room's phone service was out. Michelle made all of our calls for us (no charge) and it really wasn't a problem.

The "office" (really just a little cubby off the restaurant) had movies that you could borrow and games too. We had our laptop but the Wifi really didn't work in our room. We were able to get good internet service in the restaurant though. There was a problem with our TV remote that they couldn't fix but we never really needed the TV anyway.

Overall, I can't say enough about what a great stay we had. The ammenities, service, location, views etc. Everything was amazing. Yes. It was expensive. But if you find the money to stay here it's worth it.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Frenchman's the beginning of December. Michelle had set us up with the "Sail & Stay" package, where we sailed on a sailboat for the first 4 nights of our vacation, and then stayed at Frenchman's for the latter 4 nights. Michelle set up everything, including the charter, so that when we arrived on Tortola we went directly to the marina and our sailing portion would begin. I highly recommend this combo, as the sailboat is really the best way to explore the BVI.

When at Frenchman's the latter 4 nights, we stayed in the Star Fruit 1 bedroom cottage. We were very impressed with our cottage! It has everything you need to feel at home, and is very clean and stylish. This particular cottage has the well-equipped kitchen (was even stocked with a bottle of wine, water, and chocolate when we arrived), dining room/living room and porch on the 1st floor, and the bedroom and bathroom on the 2nd floor. The views from our cottage were spectacular. Our only complaint about the cottage is that there were many mosquitos, so we got bit quite a lot. They do however provide OFF! in the cottages which is a nice touch.

The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed the pool and the ocean. They provide kayaks which we used one afternoon, which were fun to swim around and look at the sea life (wear water shoes, its rocky). The rate includes breakfast which we found to be great. Chef Paul includes 3 items on the menu each morning which changes daily and we found it to be the perfect start to our day. We only ate at the restaurant one night for dinner, but it was excellent. We did go there for happy hour a couple of times however which we really enjoyed. They had $2 fish tacos and $3 mojitos each night as the happy hour special.

I strongly suggest renting a car. The resort is within walking distance to Soper's Hole Marina, which is great, but you're going to want to explore the island more and can only do that by car (Michelle can arrange this for you). We were happy however that we were staying on the West End after exploring the island- we just found it to be more quaint in that area.

Michelle really provides exceptional customer service, which is why I believe this property really stands out (beyond its natural beauty). We booked our trip 8 months in advance, and she was always available when we had questions, and she would be very available when we eventually got onsite to answer questions, set up more day trips etc.

Excellent stay!

A wonderful place to relax, snorkel, shop, whatever you desire at the time. The people were more than helpful, no matter what we asked. The food was tremendous! The room more than expected. Beautiful scenery from all rooms. What a great end to an already fantastic sailing trip!
