“Couples Stay AWAY!”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

My husband and I are avid travelers and spent lots of time researching for our honeymoon after our destination wedding. After reading countless reviews about how romantic and luxurious LDB was we splurged and booked our week long trip. We could not have been more disappointed with the quality, service or lack of luxury at LDB. Below are our three biggest concerns that would prevent us from recommending this hotel:

Rooms:
We stayed in a treehouse room because we were told these were close to the beach and families were not allowed to stay here due to the height. The rooms were less than luxurious. They are close to the service road so you have to keep the shades drawn for privacy, and there is no way to view the water front anywhere you can sit in the room. After two days we brought this to the attention of the management and they upgraded us to a junior suite. If you do stay at LDB I would not stay in any room categories lower than this as they are not acceptable for the price range.

Family Resort, not for couples!
This resort is clearly a family vacation spot and NOT meant for couples. There were families everywhere and absolutely no privacy or luxurious adults only environment. We are in no way against traveling to family friendly resorts but children clearly rule the hotel here. Large families were on vacation and left their children mostly unattended at the pool, beach and restaurant areas. The property is very safe so I understand this, however it is not ideal for honeymooners. There were even small children at the spa pool!! You should know the main hotel pool (only pool besides the spa pool that is only available during your treatments) closes at 6pm!! All restaurants on the property close at 9pm!!! There are no lights on the beach and absolutely nothing going on after dinner.

Food and Service were below par:
The hotel is quoted constantly for having outstanding service. We noticed very quickly that while the hotel had very friendly staff, they were not providing good service. We waiting long periods of time for food and drinks. One day towels were not made available at the pool or beach until well after 11am. The food was also severely lacking for the price. We opted for the Romance Package which included three meals so we ate every meal on the property. There was only one choice for breakfast, which was a buffet with only a few items that NEVER changed. We also only had one option for lunch with a menu that NEVER changed. For dinner we had a choice of buffet or a la cart. Men had to wear long pants to the a la cart restaurant and the food was a little better, but again the menu did not change. The buffet dinner was less than appetizing with lots of repeat (left overs) from one night to the next.

We have brought all our concerns to the management who received the suggestions well and have told us they are working on making changes to create more separation for adults. Until this change happens I cannot recommend the hotel for couples. And really unless the food were to improve or you eat only off property I couldn't recommend it to anyone in this price category. After sailing around BVI there are plenty of other areas with just as nice a location that provided better food, accommodations, service and experience.

Room Tip: Rooms below the Junior Suite category are not acceptable for the price range.

Dear "20sTravelers,"

Thank you for taking the time to review Rosewood Little Dix Bay. We are very sorry to read that your stay did not meet your expectations.

As you mention in your review, we do have quite a history as a couples-friendly resort. We also have a strong reputation as a family friendly resort with an excellent children's program. We do our best to maintain the individual experiences that our guests expect from our resort, but occassionally the separation between guests can get muddled along our beach and in our public areas. We will certainly consider the opportunities to create a better situation where families and honeymoon couples alike will be able to enjoy their stays.

We want you to know that we have taken your feedback and shared it with the rest of our management team and we intend to fully address the gaps in service you've experience. The resort is undergoing a phased multi-million dollar renewal plan that will take place over the next few years. Part of that plan includes updating accommodations including the Tree House cottages, as well as guest facilities at the resort. Another very important part of the plan involves in-depth staff training. This year our staff members will receive cross-exposure training to experience service and training techniques to share from our legendary sister properties.

With the planned improvements to our resort facilities, accommodations and service level, we envision a Rosewood Little Dix Bay that will continue to impress and satisfy all of our guests. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future, so that we might have the opportunity to exceed your expectations.

Kind regards,

Edward Linsley

To this day my kids still reflect back on our trip to Little Dix Bay as probably their favorite vacation! Its a nice tucked away spot that really allows you to get away from it all. We love the fact that we were just steps from the beach but that there was shade and a beautiful patio to sit out on if we decided to take a break from the beach. When we arrived they presented my kids with cupcakes that had their names in frosting on the plates! That could be what sold them on the whole trip. My husband also thinks that my younger son remembers it so well because of the vast and incredible buffets! The property is beautiful and natural without being 'fussy' and the excursions to neighboring beaches was great. We also took a day trip on our own down to the Bitter End which was fun. We loved the bay because it was so calm and the kids could play without worrying about getting pummeled by waves and there were still fish to see. Overall it was a great vacation for our family and we would definitely visit another Rosewood Property.

Since our disappointing visit last May a new Managing Director has taken the reins of this world-class resort and begun restoring it to it's former 'self'. A new head chef has improved and introduced new variety to the menus both in the Sugar Mill & the Pavilion restaurants, house-keeping is once again immaculate and dependable, the service is uniformly excellent, and the beach (as always) divine. It's a pleasure to look forward to our next visit (we've been going there for 25 years) and we've, in fact, booked in again for another two weeks in January.

My husband, 10 year old son and I just got back from a wonderful week-long vacation at LDB. We stayed in a beachfront cottage (#26) that was steps away from the gorgeous beach, Beach Grill restaurant and all beach activities.

All three of us enjoyed the free kayaks, paddle boards, hobie cats and snorkel equipment (the latter of which you can keep for the duration of your stay). We also took advantage of the beautiful tennis courts, well-equipped fitness center and the complimentary boat rides to The Baths and back. If you go to the Baths, I highly recommend the restaurant at the top (fittingly called Top of the Baths). It has a freshwater pool you can cool off in and the food was surprisingly good!

I felt the property could have used one more dinner option. We ate almost all dinners off property because buffet dining was offered at the Pavilion most nights and the Sugar Mill restaurant isn't for kids under 12. The restaurants we enjoyed off property were Coco Maya, The Rock Cafe and the Mineshaft. However, the daily breakfast buffet was very nice and included almost everything you could think of - waffles, french toast, pancakes, omlettes, eggs, plentiful fruits, meats, cheeses, cereals, pastries and made-to-order smoothies. Pizzas at the Beach Grill were also quite good for a lunch option.

Staff was wonderful and accommodating and we felt welcome at every turn. I especially enjoyed a pedicure at the lovely spa with Lissa.

We felt prices were inline with most island resorts. And, actually, I didn't feel nickle and dimed at LDB like some other places. For example, all water sports were complimentary and they provided bug spray and a citronella candle in our room -- surprisingly at other resorts I've had to pay for both.

Because we visited during the off-season, and right before the resort was due to close for a six-week renovation, we enjoyed a very laid-back vacation. It seemed like most of the guests at that time were also families with children of all ages. And although my son was concerned with the lack of TV in the room at first, there was so much to do on Virgin Gorda that he returned to the room exhausted each night.

We can't wait to return and visit our friends in VG!

Room Tip: We enjoyed easy beach access and a fairly short walk to the main buildings in our beachfront cottage...

We really enjoyed our stay. Our upgraded room slept 1 adult and 2 kids comfortably. Could not have had 4 people in the room. Breakfast buffet was very satisfying and the gym was well equipped. Spa was wonderful. Food was expensive so decided to order room service kids menu which turned out to be a great meal eaten on our ocean view balcony. No televisions in room which turned out to be a blessing. Free wifi in rooms though. Definitely would return.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from main building.

We got in later in the evening and were seated for dinner in a very mid-century modern building. I noticed that everyone at the surrounding tables was over the age of 65 years old. As my stay here progressed in time, I started to notice most of the other guests were not only older but also from the Southern parts of the USA and often voiced political opinions at breakfast time (because this is when they got their free xerox of the NY times headline stories) that were uncomfortable for me to listen too.

I loved the beaches here, this hotel has a great service in which they will take you to basically any local beach via small boat & for $45 you can get a picnic lunch for 2 with an umbrella. There are a ton of fish nearby in the waters and many of the rooms have a small private patio connected to the beach. The spa at Rosewood Little Dix Bay is incredibly expensive, expect to pay $200+ per basic service like massage. The meals are mostly buffet style and will run you anywhere from $50-125 per meal including breakfast.

Our room felt relaxing however it lacked some basics like no coffee maker or TV. The remodel that was done was done in such a way that it looked unfinished, some bad design choices. The hotel needs some updating in general especially the lounge room with the games/books/computers/tv felt dirty and chaotic.

This hotel was hard to get to, if you fly into Beef Island I would pay the extra money to have the hotel pick you up by boat otherwise expect delays.

Stayed Aug 7-12:

Travel - Arriving was difficult due to 2 separate airline travel issues. Major storm in ATL caused a 2 hour delay departing ATL to SJU on Delta. Definitely NOT the airline's fault, it was a ground stop absolute inundation sitting on the tarmac. We arrived in SJU with 12 minutes to get to Seaborne for the departure. We obviously missed that.

I had corresponded with Seaborne and Little Dix while GoGo was still working and was able to look at possible alternatives to get there. Seaborne was great in accommodating us on a 7 pm departure from SJU to Tortola (we were on the 3:20 pm to Virgin Gorda directly).

Seaborne's 7:00 pm was delayed by nearly 2 hours due to their IT system crashing. Finally landed in Tortola around 10:15-10:30.

Immigration was abysmal - pointlessly slow and painful.

Then - Vacation began!! Little Dix representative met us outside of immigration. They had kept up with our delays and changes. Quick shuttle to the boat - cold towels and rum punches and we were off on an 11:00+pm boat ride to Little Dix!! Gorgeous starry night set the tone for the rest of the trip.

Check-in was seamless in the room; complimentary bottle of rum, etc. We stayed in Treehouse #6 - nearly in the middle of the crescent-shaped bay and a short walk to Pavillion/Sugar Mill in 1 direction and fitness center/tennis in the other.

Since our first day there was a Thursday, they had a picnic at a remote beach. We chose to hang at the resort instead - great idea. I counted no more than 4-5 other people on the beach the entire day!! It was so quiet - exactly what I needed.

The entire stay was really highlighted by the small number of people across the resort - giving the feeling of a private resort.

Room - 50 steps to the beach!, perfect laid-back room design with a bit of a rustic beach feel - suits my taste perfectly. Outdoor rain-shower, lounge chairs on the deck, hammock below - just perfect. Housekeeping came 3-4 times per day and were really invisible - couldn't have asked for anything better.

Food - For me, it's all about fresh fruit/veggies, local fish, simple preparation. We booked through AMEX's FHR, so got he breakfast buffet included. Fresh fruit was abundant and beautiful. They had grilled mahi on the breakfast a la carte and I added that on a couple of times.

Lunch - IMHO, was the best meal each day. I typically had the local grilled fish and a side salad - each day the fish was based on whatever was local and fresh - mahi, swordfish, snapper - cooked to perfection!!

Dinner - Large buffets at the Pavillion most nights. I'd give them a 7/10 on those. Great selections, etc., but each night the fish was overcooked. For a large group, I know it's hard to get that right, but they could have done much better IMHO. Sugar Mill 1 night was fine, but not extraordinary.

Beach/Beach drops - perfection!! Ideally, I'd like a secluded beach with clear water, beautiful sand, snorkeling and body surfing. No waves here for body surfing, but the rest they have in spades!! Effortless access to beach, floats, snorkel gear, hobie cats, kayaks, paddle boards, etc., all free of charge and plentiful. Did a complimentary beach drop to The Baths - again, effortless!

Staff - Was very nice, accommodating, friendly, etc. We had a couple of less than friendly people on the wait staff, but nothing overt, just not as warm as the stupendous ones.

Spa - With FHR, got a $100 Spa discount. 90-minute deep tissue massage, infinity pool at the spa, etc. - all were marvelous. There's a hike down to a secluded beach past the spa. Went there for a few hours and again, I was the only one there.

Departure - Smooth as silk. Departed from VIJ to SJU on Seaborne. Small planes with huge windows made the flight pretty cool. No issues on the travel day back!

Notes: I'd be wary of the large buffets and be prepared for delays in customs. If you are looking for laid back, casual, intense beach time, etc., this is the place!!
