“Beautiful Property! Spectacular Accommodations!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2014

We spent 4 days at Caneel Bay (St. John) and 4 days at Little Dix Bay (Virgin Gorda) -- both Rosewood properties. Our accommodations at LDB were much nicer. LDB beach drops are nice and there are 2 excellent hiking trails from the property. Sense Spa (on property) is AMAZING. The closest town to LDB (Spanish Town) doesn't have much to offer. Although Coco Maya is a very nice tapas-style beachfront restaurant. My only very minor complaint about LDB would be that there are few a la carte dining options. That said, I'd highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: The "Junior Suite" at LDB is AWESOME! These are the newest rooms on the property.

My wife and I made our 4th annual trip back to this little paradise resort on Virgin Gorda. Our trip was made a bit more difficult, due to American Eagle no longer flying from San Juan to Tortola. So, we had to make due with a late afternoon arrival. We arrived in tortola, and as usual a friendly face was awaiting to take us and our bags to the boat. And as usual, we completed the sign in while sipping rum punch on our way to LDB. The boat ride from Tortola to LDB is a great way to get into full relaxation mood. Anyway, as usual, the weather was perfect. The staff was great. The food was great. The only thing that was bad was that the time went by too quickly. Before we knew it, it was time to head back home to reality. Yes, the price went up a bit. But, we still had a great time. A room footsteps off the beach, torchlit dinners, Lobster night, relaxing spa treatments, beach dropoffs are all great. But, simply floating on a mat in the bay, or sitting under a pomfrond hut reading my kindle are great ways to experience the true beauty of LDB.

One night, after Lobster night was just ending the power went out in the entire resort. Nobody, and I mean nobody panicked. They made sure everyone was ok. I was sitting at the bar and offered to help drink all of the beer before it got warm (I'm always thinking of others). There was a cool breeze that night, so we kept the doors open in our room. And the power was restored within 12 hours to most of the resort. But to my point, nobody let it bother them. We were in paradise, and simply went out to the beach and enjoyed paradise.

This trip we actually decided to run up the winding roads that lead up to the condos. Great views, and a killer hill workout. We never left the resort, except a sunset cruise and a dropoff @ Saba Rock...gotta love those Painkillers!

As always, its nice to see the same familiar faces every year like Jimmy, Clinton, Monique, Venita, Captain Kodak and many others that I am unintentionally leaving out due to a brain fart. A hotel staff can make or break a guests stay. And the staff really performed well during the power outage, and as a result the guests were able to remain relaxed. Relaxation, after all, is the main reason my wife and I keep returning.

I recently spent a week here with two friends and two of our seven year olds. It was a girls trip... A tropical dream trip. Here are my thoughts...
-We rented a villa with a pool-- great choice especially if you have children. Everything you need is in the villa.. Laundry room, full kitchen. They stocked the fridge for us.
-Location--excellent. It is about 2 min from the harbor. We chartered a sailboat through La Boheme Charters.. Excellent day and highly recommend.. They are great with children.
Kids camp-- excellent; it is a well thought out room that apparently a teacher planned.
Food-- very good food; the Monday night buffet was amazing.
-Staff-- very kind, very attentive; not nosey or in your face.
-Beach-- magical with great water activities
-Spa-- a must
-golf carts-- probably need replacing but they do get you from point A to B.

When people complain of the price I have to laugh... It is no secret when you book it Well worth it if you can comfortably afford it.

Overall it was amazing.. A great family or couples resort.

Just returned from another fabulous visit to LDB! The resort once again exceeded our expectations for hospitality. The staff is so friendly and helpful, from the time we were met at the airport, we felt like we were "home" again. The room was clean and comfortable, housekeeping is terrific. The breakfasts were a daily treat, especially having that first cup of coffee looking out over the Caribbean, the dining room staff never had to be asked to seat us as close to the water as possible. Dinners were good, we had one of the nicest Valentine's Day dinners ever in the Sugar Mill. It was really wonderful to have more live music in the evenings than in past years. The Beach Restaurant has its own "live entertainment", it was the frequent observation of Sea Turtles! Also, while we tend to do MAP (for the convenience), it was nice to note that the resort allows one to change the selected meal plan once during the stay, which we took advantage of and were able to try the fabulous and nearby Coco Maya Restaurant.
The excursions were just as terrific as in years past, with a couple of special highlights. One was the Spring Bay picnic on Thursdays which includes a Steel Drum band as well as delicious BarBQ on the beach. Our favorite excursion, the Norman Island snorkeling excursion was made even better this year by the addition of Sean to the trip. He led us around the various stops we made and pointed out and named the beautiful fish we were seeing (including a Barracuda!) as we snorkeled. The trip generally ends in lunch at the famous floating bar/restaurant, Willie T's. The great food and atmosphere are not to be missed. Also fun is the Sunset cruise.
Only used the Spa for a much needed manicure, it was so relaxing, being pampered while watching the water. The fitness center is small but well equipped and the option to have some personal training seemed very popular while we were there. As usual, the tennis courts were busy throughout our stay.
Have been to multiple places in the Caribbean over the years and we keep coming back to LDB for the perfect mix of romantic, relaxing, friendly and luxurious to complement the most beautiful place on earth. Can't wait to return next year!

Room Tip: Check out the new TreeTop Suites! Lovely renovation

Little Dix Bay has great "chi" - a relaxed, soothing atmosphere complimented by the friendliest staff you'll find anywhere in the world. This places oozes R & R. However, at these prices one expects rooms that are pretty much impeccable, and Little Dix is getting a Little Long in the Tooth.

Fit and finish are sometimes in need of attention - some paint and maintenance would do wonders. Also need to patch up the road/walkway -- the potholes are ankle-breakers, especially in the dark of night....

But in general, the amazing atmosphere at this world-class destination resort smooths over the niggling deficiencies.

Room Tip: Check out a resort mp before booking - some rooms are a kilometer or more away from reception and di...

This was our fourth trip to LDB. That right there should tell you something. With the world to choose from, we keep coming back.

The bay is the main attraction. Half a mile of sand and gorgeous water just for you. We did run into a wedding party this time that made an awful lot of noise, but they were gone after a couple of days.

The staff is very nice. We stayed in the same room we had been 2 other times. One thing that disappointed was the new increased noise level coming from the golf-cart depot behind us. Several times an hour, we were treated to the loud backing up noise. This was not present nearly as much the first few times we had been there.

Otherwise, we love this place, we will keep coming back, and we recommend it to everyone all the time.

My husband, son and I spent just under two weeks at Little Dix right after Christmas. The grounds are immaculate, and it is one of the prettiest beaches on one of the prettiest islands in the Caribbean. Our "premium ocean view" rooms were lovely, tastefully decorated, immaculately clean and beachfront. We enjoyed many hours idling on the lounge chairs just out front, listening to the waves, reading novels and visiting with one another.

Our two rooms (1 and 2) were just down the beach from the Sugar Mill, and that's where the problem began. On an ordinary night, the Pavilion and Sugar Mill are good neighbors; we were not once disturbed by noise or traffic -- that is, until the convention arrived. Though there were no more than 40 or so members of the group, this is a small resort, and it is not capable of absorbing the extra traffic or commotion. At well over $2000 a night, we did not expect to witness pirate parties, booze cruises, or big loud groups in the bar. It's just not what we came for....

The issue came to a roiling head when the group took over the Sugar Mill for their closing festivities. We returned to our rooms following dinner to find that their music was inescapable. Even in the shower, it was overwhelming. The walls vibrated with the bass. And we could hear every word their Master of Ceremonies shouted out through the hyped up PA system. When we expressed our concern by calling the front desk, a very pleasant young woman said she was having trouble hearing me and then opined that "the party was quite loud." Right. While she assured me that such parties usually ended by 10 pm (it was already around that time), she took no action whatsoever to help remedy the situation. On our 4th call to the front desk, I asked to speak to the Managing Director. I was put on hold for a few minutes, and then told that he was "off property" and "not answering." Eventually, somewhere around midnight the noise finally stopped.

The following morning, I stopped by the front desk to register my dissatisfaction with both the noise and staff's response. The front desk manager was quick to apologize, offer a compensatory massage, and assure me that the Managing Director would be by to see me shortly. And, indeed, he was. He too apologized profusely and assured me that had he received my call the previous evening, he would have intervened immediately. And I believe him. But the fact is that he did not get the message, and that suggests a serious staffing problem.

Again, the real issue is that Little Dix Bay is too small and quiet a resort to absorb large business groups. And it's core customers like it that way. We won't return without first confirming that there won't groups in-house during our stay.

Room Tip: Beware of big groups..... POV rooms 1 and 2 are noisy when groups are in-house.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Rosewood Little Dix Bay is currently closed for a comprehensive renovation and is scheduled to re-open in late 2017. The iconic Rosewood Little Dix Bay is currently closed for a comprehensive, multi-million dollar restoration, which will be the most substantial beautification project since the resort was founded by Laurance S. Rockefeller over 50 years ago. The restoration will include the complete redesign of the resort’s guestrooms and suites, its three restaurants and overall enhancements to the resort’s gardens and landscaping. New York City-based Meyer Davis Studio will lead the restoration, working alongside Miami-based architectural firm OBMI. Together these agencies will honor Laurance S. Rockefeller’s unique vision of a luxurious hideaway set amidst the pristine backdrop of Virgin Gorda. The renewal will bring about a new level of sophistication in keeping with the natural setting, whilst introducing brand new signature suites for the ultimate in relaxation and style. A rebuilt Beach Grill will offer a one-of-a-kind beach dining experience, while the iconic Pavilion and Sugar Mill buildings will remain intact but will feature extended indoor/outdoor dining areas. Guests will also enjoy an elevated arrival experience and the resort’s vibrant tropical gardens will be enhanced with new lighting, signage and improved access to Little Dix Bay beach. The renovation will also bring the addition of new restaurant concepts for The Pavilion, Beach Grill and Sugar Mill; new world-class amenities; elevated service standards and an increased focus on sustainability. Upon reopening towards the end of 2017, Rosewood Little Dix Bay will reaffirm its legacy as the Caribbean’s leading luxury resort. ... more   less
