“Definitely Not For Everyone”
Reviewed 8 February 2011

Its now safe to write this review because I've booked my reservation/ paid deposit for 2012. Come anytime you want!

This was our second visit to Mango Bay Resort. Last year we stayed four days. This year was seven. Next year fourteen.

Mango has no pool, tennis courts, spa, bar or restaurant. If you want pretentious, fancy or high filutin you'll be out of place here (You're far better off at Little Dix or Biras Creek)

This is a high quality place for low maintenace, self sufficient folks. Gino and his staff make everything easy for you. The other guests become extended family - even for private people like us. Like I said, no bar, but happy hour happens almost every night on the beach (the full kitchen helps in this regard). No restaurant, but you smell the barbeques sizzling nightly.

It lierally feels like home (sans the snow) after a few days.

Mango Bay is friendly, safe and comfortable. It has a beautiful, uncrowded beach (I've never seen more than five people in the water at any one time) and excellent snorkeling.

Our unit, #10, is ninety feet from the water. How many places well under $400 per night in the high season can offer that? Plus you'll save lots of money running your own bar and restaurant while you're there. I guess you tell we're sold.

We can't wait to get back!!!

We stayed at Mango Bay for three nights in early December in an ocean view villa (though we'd actually booked an ocean view efficiency, we were upgraded). It was our honeymoon. Mango Bay is in an absolutely beautiful location, and it is pretty quiet. During our stay, we didn't see many other guests. The beach was really nice, and we enjoyed using the resorts sea kayaks. Our stay was almost perfect - except for the mosquitoes. We expected them outside, but not inside the villa. There were gaps between the screens and they were able to get inside...and not just a few! But, this was just a minor annoyance, otherwise we loved the resort! If you stay at Mango Bay, you will need a car if you want to see the island or go out to eat.

Gino and his wife run this place like a dream. Everything was clean and fresh, the cleaning ladies were friendly and thorough. But the best part was that we woke up to waves lapping 10 feet from our front door every morning. The second best part was the outdoor kitchen. I don't ever want to go back to cooking indoors again, but alas, the vacation is over. Lastly, the buildings have this really cool tropical midcentury modern feel that let you know you are in a special place- not just any cookie cutter hotel

My Wife and I stayed in a beachfront suite for 7 days here absolutely loved it. This was our second trip to the BVI, so we knew what to expect, but were taken aback at how beautiful Mahoe Bay and Mango Bay resort are.
Our suite was literally just steps away from the surf with our own small private area. A couple loungers were all we had outside the large shaded porch, but that was all we needed. The shaded porch was spacious with a pair of very comfortable lounge chairs and a dining table to enjoy those beautiful sunsets or to escape the direct sun for a bit. Inside the suite was simple yet luxurious and comfortable. Spacious dining room with a nice table and sofas, cooking area with sink, stove and refrigerator, and a nice large bed and bathroom.
Outside the room, the resort was very well kept and beautiful. There was some construction going on at a location next to the resort, but it was a very minor inconvenience at the most. Noise was not a problem even though I am a late sleeper......lets face it, if you're up past 10 in the am in the islands, you need a wake up call lol.
Service was excellent. The cleaning crew were very friendly and very thorough, and the rest of the resort staff were very helpful with anything we needed. We came as a package that the resort put together which included a car rental, single dinner out, and a massage for two. The dinner at The Rock Cafe was excellent, again with great service and great food. The car rental was a small Suzuki Jimny, that was perfect for our needs.

Overall, I would definitely stay here again and certainly recommend this resort to friends and family.

We stayed in the beach studio for 10 days in Oct. The good news was we avoided the 20" rainfall that occurred just previous to our arrival (wake of a hurricane elsewhere). The bad news was that the repair and clean up brought out jack hammers and chainsaws on the property and down the beach, & guys throwing boulders into trucks on the road above the resort. Add in the churned up ocean & the leaf-blowers maintaining the landscaping and we were not the happiest of campers to begin with. Once things calmed down we had a pretty good time. My husband is extremely noise sensitive, so he never did relax completely -- I think that due to a fall special, there were perhaps were a few more people than normal for that time of year. But I should emphasize that for most people, the few other families there would not have posed a problem.

The public beach front area of the resort was a lot smaller than I had thought -- the place with the hammock & row of loungers. Walk down the steps on to Mahoe Bay proper and you have a lovely crescent bay. At that time of year though, the tides were very high and it could be difficult to walk the beach. There is next to no shade at the public part of the property & we envied the people who had paid a lot more for the couple of suites with deep sea facing porches with shade all day.

Apart from the lack of afternoon shade, the beach studio was nice. The air conditioned bedroom was simple but quite comfortable; we felt perfectly safe without locks etc. & left valuables in the sturdy in-room safe. i cooked all meals in the outdoor kitchen & loved sitting in the hammock with a rum drink as the sun set. Flies & mosquitoes were fierce (after a 20" rain storm!) but we kept the bedroom closed, the maids sprayed every day & we went through a couple of cans of Off.

We had gone to Mango Bay chiefly for the snorkeling & we absolutely loved the reef. Once the water cleared, we were out a couple of times a day & every trip brought a treat of some sort. Once on a very calm day as I was looking out to sea, a ray came swimming by, only its eyes above water. If we were ever to return, we would pay the (considerable) extra and take the large one bedroom next to the beach studio -- it offers so much more shade, views and privacy.

Virgin Gorda is a lovely, sleepy island. The people are pretty friendly and helpful. We went 10/2010 and high season had not QUITE started yet so it was very slow and things still weren't totally open.

Gino at Mango Bay was friendly and helpful.
Our room was the Ocean View studio ($180 a night) - up a flight of very steep, tiled stairs - not for the elderly or out of shape!
The room smelled like it had been shut up a while... it was better after airing out.
It was pretty clean overall.
The kitchenette was stocked fairly well (but no oven).
Bathroom was older... there was a bidet but it was broken, a light was out, bathroom not air conditioned. The bathrooms had soap and nice towels but no shampoo & conditioner (you can pick up in town if you didn't bring any). There is a hairdryer.
Mosquitos didn't seem to be able to get in to our room which was a plus because that would've been miserable... they were out in full force after all the recent rains!
We DID get a room key and chose to lock our room (just in case - computers & stuff).
Parking was ample and not too far away.
They DID have kayaks, but not with back rests, so sadly we could not sue them.
The floating mats are nice and new.
Sadly and frustratingly, the wi-fi was spotty/intermittent which was frustrating (we had been on a catamaran for a week and NEEDED to check in with kids and with office and were COUNTING on it!).

The rooms are basic. Another reviewer said "Think IKEA meets the beach" which was so true. A/C units are wall units in the bedrooms only. We had a studio, so this worked for us just fine :)
It actually got TOO cold and turning it down was not working... we had to request a blanket for the next night!
TV was small (18") and older and far away from the bed, which was fine but a bit hard to see. There was a DVD player. This was nice because with limited night life, we watched a movie every night.

You NEED a car on this island. Period. There are not a lot of restaurants and nothing is in walking distance. (There is no restaurant onsite and no room service or anything... you could probably find a provisioning service, but with a car, you could just go down to Spanish Town to Buck's and grocery shop yourself.)

We ate at Saba Rock (you have to drive to ferry and take a free ferry over) The Rocks, and Chez Bamboo... all fine if pricey.

Definitely spend a day at the Baths (make sure to go when the cruise ships aren't in or you will miss the beauty in the crowds).
Savannah Beach (spectacular!) had some people on Sunday but was virtually deserted during the week. We also took a day trip to the island Anegada... we LOVED this trip! We rented a car there for $50 and went to Cow Wreck beach and a few others. SO worth it. Ferry runs to Anegada from VG on Mon/Wed/Fri at 7:20AM and picks you back up at Anegada at 5:00PM (ferry ride is an hour and costs around $30 or so per person). This is a long one day adventure.

We would recommend Mango Bay Resort, but realistic expectations would be a plus.

We were ocean front from 8-21 thru 8-28. We just beat out Hurricane Earl and had no problems with the weather.

PROS: Right on the beach, 12 pelicans, free Kayaks, great hosts.
Cons: Virgin Gorda was mostly shut down and two weeks early. No TV, no internet and the heat made the living room tough to bear.

My wife and I, in our 50's, returned for a full week at Mango Bay in Virgin Gorda after a two night stay in 2007. The bathroom on our oceanfront room was remodeled and that was great. The resort would be better served to extend the AC to the bathroom so ladies can dress and put on makeup without melting or retreating to a somewhat darker bedroom. Gino, our host, makes the island personable and friendly. The unexpected shut down of darn near all restaurants and bars made the islandless fun.

Mango Bay added a car and an in-the-room couples massage to our package and those were great additions to the resort.
