“Stingray Sailing - Must Do in Caymans!”
Reviewed 13 April 2009

We just got back from a cruise that took us into Grand Cayman for a day. I booked with Stingray Sailing because of the promise of fewer people on the boat. Chip was GREAT! From the time I booked he had great communication and was very easy going. We were able to pay once we got there and you could tell it was a very laid back but professional operation. We met right where the cruise docked so it was very easy for us to find. We took a short bus ride to the boat which is a lovely catamaran. There was plenty of room on board for us to lay down and enjoy the short ride to the stingrays. Obviously plenty of operations go to Stingray City and once I saw them all I was so glad to be with Chip and Stingray Sailing. First, there were only 25 people on our boat and well more than that on the others. Secondly, the other operations made the people all wear bright yellow flotation jackets. Now the water is only 3 feet deep so I was VERY glad that I was able to move around without a life jacket on. Chip was educational and capable, playing with the stingrays and making sure all of us that wanted to got a chance to feed and pet them. He taught us the best way to feed them and made us feel comfortable the entire time. After we had finished feeding them, we all got back on the boat and went to a snorkeling spot over a reef. Then Chip fed us some of the best fruit I have had and we enjoyed a trip back to the mainland. On our way back, Chip dove off the boat and found a starfish and some other creatures. He brought them back on board and let us touch them before safely returning them to the ocean. It was educational and unique. I am a diver and in all the times that I have been out with operators, have never seen anyone do what he did. It was amazing and fun! I would highly recommend Chip and Stingray Sailing as an alternative to the over booked cruise options. I went with my parents who are in their 60s and it was fun for all of us. We got back to the cruise ship port exactly when he promised. I would use Stingray Sailing again and again!

“Stingray Sailing On the Far Tortuga”
Reviewed 27 March 2009

Stingray Sailing made our day trip to Grand Cayman. Chip was waiting an hour early for us at the dock. Short van ride later we were at the marina climbing onto a nice catamaran. We had ten people total with plenty of room to spread out. All the other boats were elbow to elbow -- if you want a personalized experience stingray sailing is for you. Bert sailed us to the sting ray sandbar where we swam with the beautiful animals and fed them squid. It was a once in a lifetime experience. After we motored to a reef where Bert coaxed a huge eel out of his cave. The snorkeling was cool and very relaxing with Bert showing us around the reef for an hour or so. We got back on the boat and relaxed in the sun with a cold drink for our ride back to the marina. Chip and Bert offered us fresh fruit, water and beer or soft drink for purchase. Chip recommended a local spot for lunch and dropped us off on the way back to the boat. Avoid the cattle boats and have a great time aboard the Far Tortuga!

“Fantastic Experience”
Reviewed 18 March 2009

This was a great experience- get up close with some majestic marine life in their natural habitat, while cruising there and back on a cozy catamaran.

The trip was well organized, the tour operator was easy to find in the cruise-ship plaza as they are well-signed and favorably known by the other tour-guides. We quickly met our guide Chip and our group of 10 was driven in a clean late-model passenger-van to the tour boat (a well-maintained catamaran piloted by Bert).

Before casting-off we were advised the conditions that day were uncharacteristcally very windy so that anyone uncomfortable with wavy conditions had the opportunity opt out. We all went anyways as it was sunny and warm.

The stingrays did not disappoint in their numbers or curiousity- be prepared to come in full contact with these peaceful and playful creatures as they swim all around you.

Our tour that day was cut short due to heavy wind and waves that quickly developed, and even though we had some time in the water, our tour was fully refunded because the conditions deteriorated to the point where our guide felt it was not safe to continue. A very prudent decision in the open ocean- kudos to Stingray Sailing's professionalism in dealing with the situation. The plus side to the winds was that we had an exciting sail back to shore with the catamaran showing fully what it was made for. Yippie!

I would definitely go out with thier tour again.
Thanks Chip and Bert for a great day, despite the weather!

“Stingray Sailing, Grand Cayman”
Reviewed 15 March 2009

My wife and I booked our excursion with Stingray Sailing over the internet prior to our cruise aboard the Ruby Princess. We arrived into port @ approximately 7:30 am on the 24th of February. As arranged Captain Chip was awaiting our arrival with a Stingray Sailing sign and we along with 6 others boarded Chip's air conditioned van for the short trip to the marina to board the catamaran. We were the first boat to arrive at the sandbar at Stingray City and after Chip gave us a brief "how to" we had a wonderfull experiance with the many stingrays. Chip and his crew hand also joined us in the water and they were very informative. The best part of the excursion was the fact that it was a small group (8 plus 3 crew) and the boat was very spacious. We saw many other boats with 50 to 60 people per boat!! Certainly a very great and memorable experiance. Way to go Chip!!

“Personalized service while avoiding the crowds”
Reviewed 4 March 2009

My husband and I had a wonderful first anniversary sailing with Captain Chip Whitney on the Far-Tortuga, a 43 foot sailing catamaran.

After booking my first cruise ever, I started researching the best activities with the best providers at each location. There are several vendors with good reviews to Stingray City but we were absolutely delighted that we chose Stingray Sailing. Most of the excursions are regular motorized boats packed with people. Not Stingray Sailing as Chip likes to limit it to 25 people even though he can carry considerably more.

I emailed from their website www.stingraysailing.com and Michelle promptly wrote back (She's Chip's wife.) She already knew the time our ship arrived and that we were the only one in port that day. Once we made the final reservation, she quickly acknowledged and even sent a map to know exactly where to meet them since Grand Cayman is a tender port with more than one dock.

We were the only two scheduled for last Friday (2/27/09) and that couldn't have been a more perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. Chip has a great van (even provides a step stool!) and the trip to the marina went quickly.

Chip explained that he was somewhat concerned about the amount of wind and that he would not put us in any risk if we arrived at Stingray City and were unable to swim due to wave action. And he made it clear he wouldn't charge us for the day if that was the case. (We didn't pay up front.) Unbelievable! Where do you find a business willing to honor your reservation even though you're the only two and it might be futile if the wind worsened?

On the way out, Chip made sure that we located several very large iguanas, slowing down and pulling close to shore so we could get a good look.

The wind actually lessened so we had a wonderful time. He set anchor away from the crowded boats. Chip personally took us into the water and explained exactly how to safely feed squid to the stingrays. We were free to spend as much time in the water with the rays as we wanted.

Next came the reef which was just a few minutes away. Chip made sure we were comfortable swimming and knew how to snorkel. He had great equipment, even providing my husband with a special mask since he has a beard. Chip looked in a couple of places where a large moray eel hangs out in order to show him to us, but was unable to spot him that day. He swam around some especially good areas to show us the ropes, then let us explore on our own.

Sailing back to shore, we were provided with fresh cut fruit and drinks. Marvelous day. Chip is a jewel. Although he was born and raised on Grand Cayman, he looks and sounds like an American. When I asked, he said he tries to speak so as his customers can best understand him. He also went to college in the US so is familiar with US culture as well.

Go with the best! Choose Stingray Sailing for the best time ever while on Grand Cayman.
