“Inexpensive but some ups and downs”

My girlfriend and I just recently returned from our stay at Sunset House. We would describe it as a motel that is ocean front. The rooms are clean and the air conditioning was great, so sleeping was lovely. However, it's really no frills. Do not expect a resort hotel room. The staff is quite lovely and they provided excellent service when we asked them to make dinner reservations for us. The restaurant at the hotel has mediocre food and drinks, but the waitresses are very nice and it's an absolutely gorgeous spot to take in the sunset. We don't dive, so we rented a car and drove to 7 mile beach every day so that we could sit on the beach, but you have to pay to rent lounge chairs. All in all, the hotel was great for a cheap room that's clean and within a short drive from where we wanted to be. We didn't get wireless internet in our room and the hot tub is cold.

This was a very nice, well run, clean efficient property. We booked on a Getaway through Interval International. The staff in the office: Wonderful, The housekeeping: Wonderful, The staff at the bar and restaurant : Wonderful!!!!! Fun place to be, internet included, daily housekeeping, free chairs to take to beach. And most importantly a free daily continental breakfast..... You don't get service like this. We were actually sad to leave and head to the Marriott for the second week. We would of loved to stay there even though it was off the beach!!! We plan on returning and telling everyone about it! Way to go Sunshine....We hope you read this! We actually walked miles later in our vacation to eat there again, and took family.................. Great Monster Burgers!!!!Tom and Stacie Holbel:) Hi Paco!!!!!

I stayed a few nights Jan 2011. Other reviews are correct that it's average hotel, basic, outdated furnishings, small A/C unit OK, not great and a bit noisy, bed was OK, clearly old, so only stay here for the diving or if you just want a basic hotel. If you're not fussy, the hotel is fine. Front desk staff very friendly, helpful. I did not dive, so can't comment. Hotel is 5 miles from the center of 7 mile beach so you'll need to rent a car ($50/day for economy car) or taxi ($15-20 each way to 7 mile area). Taxi from airport to hotel is $17 I think. All taxi rates are at fixed price based on distance, no meters, no gouging. US dollars accepted everywhere but they give change back in Cayman dollars unless they happen to have some US dollars from an earlier customer.

Snorkeling off the rocky coast behind the hotel is not good...no bright coral, just rocks, some fish but nothing special. Also planes fly directly over this hotel in landing pattern for airport abt once an hour...pretty loud but only lasts abt 15 seconds. Jacuzzi water was cold, never went in, so that was disappointing. Hotel has iron, ironing board, hairdryer, just ask front desk. Also has a computer w/ internet in lobby area.

I rented a car one day, drove the entire island in 5 hrs...nothing really to see or do...lots of empty beaches, empty land, just a few cafe/bars here and there along the coast, not interesting at all. 7 mile is the only developed area on the island. Suggest you make a daily plan of your activities.

Was booked at the Sunset House for the first week of January but Delta Airlines bungled things and got us there a day late and most of our bags with SCUBA gear a day after that. Maybe not the best way to start a vacation but things definitely improved when we got to the Sunset House. The check in was smooth and the welcome drink at My Bar went down fast. My Bar is an addicting place to watch the sunsets and destroyed all ambition to go to town for dining that week. We aren't naming staff individually in fear of leaving anyone out. All encountered that week at the front desk, bar, restaurant, dive shop, cleaning, and maintainance staff were good to excellent. Cathy Church's gallery is a world class treat that should be not be missed. The only thing we can't comment directly on is the boat diving as we did all shore diving trying to revisit some of the sites on our first dive trip a fast decade ago when we were too excited or scared to remember all we'd seen. The guests we had contact with there did rave about the boat diving that week but that is second hand coming from us. While Cayman is somewhat pricey, we look forward to returning to the Sunset House. Thanks for a great almost week!

We stayed here Jan 1-3 for two nights, only because we bid on priceline and couldn't get the Marriott for those dates. We arrived on saturday, party of 4, requested a two bedded room. We were sent to room 420, walked in to an unmade king bed, dirty bathroom, stinky room and garbage, called front desk, went back for an apology and given room 419, two beds and clean with a view of the ocean and sea pool. Tile floors, ok it's a diving hotel. My husband noticed cobwebs on the walls and ceiling, drips on the mirrored closet doors all which stayed there for the 2 nights. To top it off a really dirty toilet brush next to the toilet. The beds were uncomfortable. The best part of staying here, hubby and niece went diving.

Dear Ralphy57,

Thank you for taking time to provide a review of our property and I am sorry your stay with us this time was not as good as your previous two stays at Sunset House. We try very hard to ensure the rooms are properly prepared for our guests but in this instance it was not and I apologize and I wish you would have spoken to me about your concerns so your time with us would have been more enjoyable. On the day you arrived we were 100% occupied and in our hurry to get you and your companions checked into the room we assigned you one that was not yet prepared and again I apologize for the negative first impression on your return. In your review you say "No way again" but I would ask that you reconsider and try us once more so you can experience our true Caymanian hospitality. Please contact me direclty at the hotel should you wish to make a reservation as I would be pleased to assist you in your return. All the best.

Sunset house lives up to it's name with the perfect perch to watch the sinking sun from My Bar. The dive crew was top notch and the shore diving was great too! Accommodations were clean and spacious. Tiled floors are always a good idea for divers who always seems to be sloshing around wet stuff. The dive lockers were also conveniently located a short hike from the boat.

My wife and I spent a week at Sunset House in Oct 2010.

It's only a 10 minute ride from the airport, and in fact the "airport transfer" in the package consisted of us just taking a cab which the front desk paid for when we got to the hotel. Georgetown is a 15-20 minute walk, although the route is along a busy road which only has a sidewalk for a short part of the way. Cabs are relatively easy to get, but not cheap. Car rental, on the other hand, is very cheap...roughly the same per day as a round trip taxi ride ot seven mile beach. We were not interested in shopping and were very satisfied with the food at SH so we didn't spend very much time at all off the resort. The reception desk was very helpful in the planning stages and had all the information you would expect for things to do off the resort.

Our sea view room was very large with king bed and plenty of space for clothes/luggage in the large closet and dressers. There was also a small refrigerator, ac, and ceiling fan. The outdoor patio had two chairs and small table. It's nothing fancy, in keeping with the dive resort theme, but roomy, functional, and clean.

There is an above average gift/dive shop with a big focus on photography (ie, Cathy Chursh photo center). The large bar (My Bar) is a Cayman hot spot and attracts a lot of locals. It also serves as the outdoor seating area for the very pleasantly surprising restaurant. All the food we had from the extensive menu was good, and most of it was very good. It includes hotel standards, local favorites, and several Indian dishes. Prices are very reasonable and service was great. We didn't run out of choices in 7 days of lunches and 6 dinners. The included breakfast, served indoors, has a decent variety and comes in respectable portions.

The dive shop was excellent. Each diver is given a locker adjacent to the dive shop to store gear during his or her stay. The boat goes out for two one-tank dives around 8:15am each morning with up to about 15 divers on board. In the high season, they will regularly run 2-3 boats daily, but during our stay in Oct there was just one boat going out each day with 10-12 divers. Most dive sites are 10-30 minutes boat ride from the resort. The quality of instruction is very good (my wife finished her AOW training) and the costs are very reasonable.

In general, the dive masters were very hands off once you got in the water. They would typically give the group options for two guided dives (one deep profile, one more shallow) but they mostly left you and your buddy to your own devices. We were used to a much more I-lead-you-follow style but after a day or two we got used to doing most of the navigating ourselves. Most of the dive sites we visited had very tall, almost canyon-life reefs with lots of channels, swim-throughs, and over-hangs to explore.

Packages typically include two boat divers per day plus unlimited shore diving, but the shore diving is by far the best I have ever seen anywhere. The house reef is massive, with huge amounts of ground to explore. The boats almost never go out for night dives because the house reef is so good. Just rent a flashlight before the dive shop closes at 5:00pm. There's no beach at the resort (nearest beach is a 15+ minute walk down the road) by there is a pool and hot tub for lounging.
