“A highlight of our stay”

Joe Tourist Cave Tour
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 May 2014

Joe Tourist, "Big Joe", Gilbert Nicoletta is a must. Spending the better part of a day with Gil on a customized tour was so very enjoyable for each one of the four of us in our group. Gil is a Caymanian--a big man with a big personality and a big heart. He desires to please his guests with a memorable time. Gil's respectful, fun, funny, articulate, and very knowledgeable about the island, its people, its culture, its history, its flora and fauna, and its marine life. We tasted "exotic" fruit (right in his back yard) along with almonds (right from the "shell"), learned medicinal uses of various plants/trees, held his "pet" iguana, were soaked from the blowholes, ate mahi-mahi/turtle/conch for the first time, snorkeled in a lovely cove, picked up starfish, swam with turtles, and saw a lovely sunset. There wasn't a question Gil couldn't answer. Don't miss this opportunity to truly "connect" with this island and "discover the un-discovered side of Grand Cayman." We were all certainly happy that we did!

If you are interested in a personalized tour of Grand Cayman then give Gilbert a call. I had met Gilbert before and had been to Cayman several times before taking his tour. He's funny and knowledgeable and tells great stories. We had a group of 4 who had not met before (1 married couple, plus 2 singles) so Gilbert drove us around in a van and that made the experience feel more personal because we all had a chance to talk and get to know one another. It was more like a road trip with friends than a tour, but you'll find most Caymanians are warm and friendly like that! We snorkeled at Smith Cove, walked the Mastic trail, got soaked at the blow holes, had lunch at Over the Edge, played with star fish at Star Fish Point, saw tons of sea turtles at Spotts Beach and watched the gorgeous sunset. I really enjoyed learning about the native plants and animals and tasting a few of the local fruits growing at our various stops. As a previous reviewer pointed out, these attractions are free of charge and you could rent a car and do them yourself. If you have been to the island before and are familiar with it, sure, that's an option. But if you have not visited Cayman before or just stopped over on a cruise ship then taking a personalized tour (ask to be driven so you don't have to pay attention to the road) is a great way to see many different attractions in one day. You can put your feet up and enjoy Gilbert's entertaining stories, history and science lessons and beautiful scenery that Grand Cayman has to offer.

Don't get me wrong, Gilbert was a real nice guy, but this tour is NOT fair and cost us a lot of money. So, I'll save you $125 per person and you may rent a car and give yourself the tour free of charge!

1. Rent a car & grab a map
2. Follow Gilbert around on his motorcycle as he takes you to totally public and free tourist locations
3. Visit Hell
4. Snorkel at a public beach while he sits and waits
5. Visit the blow holes
6. Eat at Over the Edge and order whatever the hell you want
7. Visit a tree full of shoes on the side of the road
8. Walk up someone's driveway and look at the islands local flora and fauna
9. Trespass through their private yard
10. Visit a cave full of bats, crap, and graffiti
11. Watch a beautiful sunset

There's your Joe Tour.....
:)

We started off by doing some snorkelling while learning about the area around us. Gil was very informative and laid back at the same time. We also visited Starfish Point, the Blow Holes and the Mastic trail, where he told us about the history and plants/trees around us. We also stopped at Over the Edge restaurant for a delicious and local meal that included turtle, Mahi Mahi and conch. He drove us all over the island while telling us the history. We finished the day watching the sunset at a quiet location where we also got to see sea turtles swimming near by. All in all, we had a great day with good company.

Gilbert put together a personalized tour of a beautiful uncrowded beach, the mastic trail, caves, the blow holes and a meal at Over the Edge Cafe. He was very informative about the native culture, eco-systems and animals. He's a great guide and we are glad that we were directed to his company!
