“The best of not on the beach”
Reviewed 16 January 2012

Just got back from beautiful Grand Cayman Islands. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay within our budget. The Sunshine Suite's staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant food was delicious and since we didn't have a car you didn't need to go far for an excellent meal. The bus was close by and frequent along Seven Mile beach and we used it every day to go to town or visit Cemetary Beach which was great for snorkeling. Our room was immaculate. We were never short of clean towels. It was so convenient to have a small kitchen. In many ways it was like home away from home and we would definitely recommend staying at the Sunshine Suites for a relaxing vacation!

We enjoyed our stay at Sunshine Suites, but there were a few things that made the place less than perfect.
We booked a standard double room with queen bed, but were very disappointed when we saw it. Firstly, it looked out onto a car park. Cars were parked a few feet from the door and beyond the car park was the by-pass. The room itself was quite small, the aircon extremely noisy, and the lighting was cold and unwelcoming. We asked to be upgraded (at extra cost) and moved immediately. Our new room was on the second floor, much more spacious with two queen beds. The view was better, though over the palm trees we could see a piece of waste ground and beyond this the Ritz Carlton, which dominates the horizon and resembles a communist-era Romanian government building. A true blot on the landscape. Unfortunately, the aircon, though effective, was still noisy. We couldn’t have slept with it on. I’m no expert, but I believe that this is because the aircon is not central and each room has its own a/c fan, hence the noise. We had to rely on the ceiling fan in the night and the temperature was just about tolerable. The nice new fridge freezer was also a problem as it clicked on and off every fifteen or twenty minutes in the night, often waking us up. The kitchen area was a bit tired and the cutlery and plates a bit old and battered. The bathroom was functional but not attractive. And finally, we were surprised that the room did not have a safe. There are small, narrow safety deposit boxes in reception, but this isn’t really convenient and you have to leave larger valuable items (eg my SLR camera) unsecured in the room if you don’t want to carry them around all the time. I’m sure the rooms are pretty secure, but it can still be a niggling worry. End of gripes….it was not all bad!
The room was very clean and the beds very comfortable. There was plenty of storage for clothes and luggage. It was quiet (apart from the aircon), with little noise from adjoining rooms or from outside. The grounds, though small, were immaculately maintained, as was the pool area. Staff were friendly and helpful. The famous fish tacos were excellent, though more of a snack than a meal. Service in the Sunshine Grill was friendly. Drinks were a bit expensive; the price for the local beer, Caybrew, is on a par with the Ritz Carlton. As an alternative we used Legendz, just a few minutes walk away, which was good value and served good food in sensible portions (we’d recommend the tuna and the mahi mahi).

The Suites are well located, just five minutes walk from the best part of fabulous Seven Mile Beach. Crossing the road isn’t easy though; we are Brits and used to crossing busy roads in towns, but this was a challenge at times and bit of a pain, especially if you are loaded up with chairs, bags etc and wearing flip-flops. You then have to walk down the rather grubby and smelly path beside the Westin (think abandoned barbecue equipment, the smell of rancid fat and hotel staff enjoying an illicit cigarette). But then you are on SMB, where you can have a hundred yard stretch of beach to yourself in places if you turn right past the Westin towards the Governor’s Residence. It’s beautiful, it’s clean and it’s safe – no-one hassles you trying to sell you this and that and we were quite happy to leave our stuff on the beach when we swam.
Apart from the beach though, the strip behind SMB isn’t particularly attractive. It’s safe and clean, but a little sterile and characterless. If you tire of the beach, we’d recommend hiring a car and exploring the island. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit. Rum Point is beautiful and quiet. We didn’t see a soul on the Mastic Trail. And a wander around West Bay gives a little taste of true Caribbean life.
We feel a bit ambivalent about Sunshine Suites. It is undoubtedly good value and we had a good time in Grand Cayman, but if we return we may have to pay significantly more and find a place located on the beach, which is irresistible.

Sunshine Suites was great! Very accommodating staff, clean comfortable rooms, and a fantastic restaurant. We got a super rate on a 7 night, 6 day dive package with their dive partner (Divers Down) and everything worked out beautifully. Very convenient access to beautiful 7 mile beach (just across the street), and walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Grounds were well maintained, plenty of amenities and a nice continental breakfast each morning. Sunshine Suites has "figured it out", and we will definitely be back!

I finally put together a photo album of the 600+ pictures we took on our trip to GCM last August and I realized I never reviewed the Sunshine Suites for the website that convinced me to stay there. My 13yr old daughter and I loved it!

The landscaping, tropical flowers and trees, were beautiful. The location was great for going to the awesome beach across the street but mostly we went scuba diving with Don Foster's(free p/u and drop off), went on the Stingray City snorkel trip for free w/the hotel summer special, shopped everywhere, visited the Turtle Farm and the Macabuca at the Cracked Conch for lunch(great view and food), enjoyed the Grill at Sunshine Stes too--esp the fish taco and complimentary ice cream-a different flavor each day! The comp continental breakfast was included or you could pay a bit more for a hot one. In the office there are two computers for guests to use w/internet access which was convenient. The folks at the front desk were very friendly and helpful whenever I needed them.

Our spacious room had 2 great queen beds, a flat-screen TV, a large closet, 2 dressers, a kitchen table and nice little kitchen. Everything worked and was clean, though simple. We grocery shopped down the street. We took the "bus" into town often, made friends with some taxi drivers who didn't always charge us for the ride, and walked a lot too just so we could really know the place. It was this way we met fishermen cleaning their fish(all kinds) and got some to cook for dinner (and some photographs too). It was so nice to come back to our cool, air-conditioned room at the end of the day, shower, and lay in a hammock on the lawn in front of our room or sit in an adirondack chair before dinner. We booked the package through CheapCarribean and the price was good and all went well. I used to be a travel agent so I've stayed at more luxurious hotels on the island (it was free then), but I would go back to the Sunshine Suites again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Loved the ground floor, 2Queen room facing south I believe.

Sunshine is a lovely resort. The resort room is clean, lovely and bright. The bed and pillows are great. The only downside for me was that the complex lightning was on all night which makes it difficult to sleep with the light coming through to our room. Also I don't think the outdoor pool wasn't heated but there is lovely seven miles beach across the road. The restaurant was always full, but i am not a fan of burgers and tacos but if you love that kind of food, you will be delighted. We love the Cayman and would stay at the Sunshine Suties again.

I just spent six days in Grand Cayman scuba diving with Divers Down and stayed at Sunshine Suites. It was a great place...amazing restaraunt, nice, well maintained rooms with kitchens and the service was wonderful. The grounds provide relaxing pool with deck lounges and gazebo, fresh water, ice, beach chairs, lawns with lounge chairs and hammocks. Close to 7 Mile Beach and West Bay road that leads to many places on the island. Close to diving, shopping, site seeing and just walking around. The staff, many Canadian!!, we're most helpful, friendly and accommodating. For divers they provide special rates, a dunk tank for washing gear and storage lockers. I will definately go back to Cayman and will stay at Sunshine Suites again!

Room Tip: I had the one bedroom suite, main floor on south side closest to the beach very nice and lots of roo...

Great location on seven mile beach. Just have to cross the street to get to the beach. Nested between the Ritz and the Westin. Loved GCM no vendors on beach just the perfect place to relax! Hotel has a great restaurant the Sunshine Grill, delicious food. It does have a pool but I cannot comment on that, when I go to a beach vacation is to enjoy the beach. Free breakfast was good can pay a little more for a hot breakfast. The rate of exchange is .80 cents per $1.00 usd still Grand Caiman is one of the most affordable islands I have visited. Very safe would go back anytime. I was there for my 20th anniversary December 19-22 and the weather was just perfect.

Room Tip: No elevators here. I got a room on the second floor I asked them to switch because my husband has kn...
