“Great week at Sunshine Suites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2013

We just returned from a week at Sunshine Resorts and I want to commend you for your excellent staff. Renoir, at the front desk, was helpful, gracious, and made us feel very welcome. Marie, who cleaned our room, was a delight to meet and did a great job. Darin, the host in your oh-so-delicious restaurant, was also very friendly and accommodating. Thank you all very much for enhancing our stay!

We have been on several cruises that took us to Georgetown, Grand Cayman - and we fell in love with the island and the people on our very first cruise visit and promised ourselves that we would go back for an extended stay!
My husband and I travelled to Grand Cayman between Jan 25 and Feb 1, 2013 for our 25th wedding anniversary. Had a wonderful and relaxing time at the Sunshine Suites Resort, right across the street from one of the best beaches in the World - Seven Mile Beach.
The staff at the resort go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one, the rooms are large and kept immaculately clean. The kitchenette in the room is awesome with a fridge, microwave, cook top - we would buy groceries at the local Foster's supermarket (IGA) and make sandwiches and snacks to take with us to the beach.
The pool at the resort is quite small, but we are beach people anyway, so we only hung around the pool in the evenings for drinks, unless we were in Georgetown to take in the nightlife there! Atmosphere on the resort is very relaxing with no loud music or screaming teenagers running around.
Getting around the island is a breeze - hop on one of the local busses right outside the resort and take in beautiful Georgetown with plenty of shopping and people watching - especially when the cruise ships are docked! Car rental is also an inexpensive option. (If you are looking for jewelry, watches, perfume, hand bags, etc. etc., then Grand Cayman is the place to go!!)
The walk to the beach is no further than the walk you would have if you stayed at an all inclusive, larger resort. The traffic is good at stopping for you when getting across the street to the beach, so no problems there.
Beach chairs are also available from Sunshine Suites to take with you to the beach (at no charge), as are umbrellas. THE SUNSETS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD! Have a camera ready for sure!
Breakfast at the resort is included and there is always something for everyone to eat - both hot and cold dishes (I especially loved the lovely fruit yogurts).
We had our 25th anniversary dinner at Sunshine Grill at the resort (we booked a table before we arrived), and WOW, what service and great food! It seems like a good idea to book before hand for the restaurant, as it's very popular. People line up to get a table - the food is very reasonably priced. In fact, as Canadians, we didn't find that the prices on the island were much more expensive than the prices in Canada. (NO TAX on ANYTHING!!!).
It is VERY safe to walk around the island and explore on your own - my husband and I did a lot of walking/travelling off the beaten path, met a lot of wonderful Grand Caymanians, who always took time to talk to us and always had a smile on their faces.
We would definately recommend Grand Cayman and the Sunshine Suites Resort to anyone - we are planning a trip back there next January/February.
If you have any questions - ask away! And when you go to Grand Cayman, don't forget to bring back RUM CAKES AND TORTUGA RUM!!!

We just got back from a lovely week's stay at the Sunshine Suite. This is a very friendly and relaxing place. The rooms are spacious and very clean. While the pool is small, it is great for a quick cool off. Th beach is across a road but no farther than if you stayed at a large all inclusive resort. Would definitely go back.

This was an excellent choice for staying in the Caymans. Located in the best spot along 7 mile beach. Easy to get around with buses along the west side of the island. If staying more then 3 days best to rent a car. It is very easy to get around.

Room Tip: Our room was facing the back and very quiet, we were on 3rd floor and there are no elevators.

We were at SS for the week of Jan 24, 2013. It was our second trip to the Cayman Islands.
The hotel is ok, the staff were polite but not over-friendly except Paco, the resident feline!
The major complaint we had was the staying on the south west corner, meant hearing the WestBay garbage truck pick up at 6:50am, now I know municipalities start early, but in our & our hotel neighbours opinion, that is too early.
We skipped the daily free breakfast as soon as we discovered what we had bought at Kirks grocery was much tastier.
FYI the hotel doesn't supply a reusable coffee filter for the 10 cup coffee pot or much in the way of good sized pots & pans. You'll have to be inventive if you are planning on cooking for more then 2 people. The one bedroom we stayed did not have a door to the bedroom, so it's a suite.

If you are on the Island during the Taste of Cayman, go.
It is so worth the money.
We were there in 2008 after Hurricane Ivan, & I am so glad to see the difference in the Island, even I was impressed with Camana Bay.

Someone who was on the charter bus to the airport complained how commercial the island was, they apparently had only gone to Cuba before, we laughed and asked if they had rented a car & explored the island, of course the answer was no! First timers!

Now for all you single malt drinkers & you top self drinkers in general, try Seven Fathoms Rum.
Foodies I recommend highly the Havana chicken dish at he Sunshine Grill, it's enough for 2 people.
Go try the Tukka restaurant is on the north east side of the island, try the Kangaroo Sausage!
Yep Kanga on Cayman!

I have stayed at this hotel twice..once in August 2011 with a friend and, more recently, in August 2012 with my husband and 17 year old daughter. The second stay was as lovely as the first. Much has been said about Sunshine Suites so I will hit what I saw as the key Pros and Cons for us:

Pros:
- excellent price point in comparison to the larger hotels and most of the condos that I researched
- even though beach is across the road, it is equal to or shorter than some of the long walks to the beach we have had at some mega resorts
- Darren, Manager...very friendly fellow and can provide great information about the island and little out of the way places that are a must see...staff in general are lovely
- located near the fabulous 7 Mile Beach...one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen
- a family feel
- kitchenette is great; we would pack a soft sided cooler with drinks, snacks, sandwiches before heading to the beach or where ever we were travelling

Cons:
- bicycle rental - wish they included use of bicycles in the price of the room and simply required a refundable deposit for patrons to take them out
- pull out couch in the 1 bedroom suite was horrible...either mattress or entire couch needs to be replaced...the staff valiantly tried to make it more comfortable by putting mattress pads on it but the steel springs and metal frame still came through...our poor daughter was very uncomfortable

Would I/we stay here again? You betcha.

This property is very well maintained. Our suite was clean and comfortable with an adequate kitchen area. It did not have much of a view (we faced a road and a wall), but we got a good rate through Expedia and didn't expect more. While the pool area is small for the size of the property, it wasn't busy and we enjoyed sitting in the shade of a very comfortable cabana that cost nothing extra. The restaurant was well managed and had excellent food, especially the snapper. Plenty of chairs were available to carry across the street to the famous 7-Mile Beach. This was a fine place to stay for a few nights. We really enjoyed the kindness of all of the Cayman people we encountered, and the water is gorgeous. Would visit again.
