“Fine But Not Spectacular”
Reviewed 21 June 2014 via mobile

I stayed at the Sunshine Suites with a friend for a dive weekend in early June. The room was large, clean and had a full size fridge which was useful. The bed was comfortable. The room, however, was in need of updating as the room feels a little tired.

The weather when we were there was very rainy (no fault of the hotel); but there is absolutely nothing to do at the Sunshine Suites if the weather doesn't cooperate. I was also surprised that they didn't have any loaner umbrellas at the front desk.

While the hotel is well situated, I would definitely opt for beachfront next time. It's true that the Suites are right across the street from the beach but I underestimated how much of a difference it makes to be on the water -- even at a slightly higher price.

The pool at the Suites is disappointing. While well maintained, it is small and unimpressive. Seating is limited; however, because the weather was particularly stormy, it wasn't overly crowded.

Staff, as noted in prior reviews, was helpful and courteous. The restaurant on site still serves the best fish tacos on the island. The self-serve breakfast was very good for a pre-dive fuel up.

Overall the hotel was fine. It was clean, the rooms were large and the staff was nice. However, the lack of beach, unimpressive pool and need of updating mean that I would be unlikely to stay here again (although I will surely go back to the restaurant).

We were so pleased with the Sunshine Suites. It was a really good price for a large spacious room- we had plenty of room even with a family of 4 and lots of luggage- bathroom was small but very functional. Linen and towels were decent quality- beds and pillows were soft. The room has a 2 burner stove, full sized fridge and toaster, so we were able to save a bit on meals. However, a small toaster oven would have been the perfect addition so you could make rolls/breads for breakfast and cookwear/sliverware is very very sparse and it could be difficult to cook/eat with and you have to clean up with a single sink- but it is do-able. Lighting was good and room temp was pretty easy to control. It does not have a reading chair though :( I missed a good chair to read in while on vacation. Housekeeping kept the room very and there were plenty of beach chairs to borrow at no charge. We would definitely stay here again! Desk staff was helpful and knowledgeable and the location was great! However- no elevators for a 3rd floor room, but grounds were clean and exterior/interior was cute and island themed.

That pretty much says it all. There's nothing spectacular about Sunshine Suite, in fact it's easy to imagine this sort of resort/hotel just about anywhere in US. But there were a few key ingredients that made or a bit better than ordinary.
Location: in the heart of 7 Mile beach, you're situated behind a strip mall, but one with a great cafe a liquor store with a decent wine selection, and a convenience store that also happens to operate trips to stingray city. And you're still just a 5 min walk to the beach.
Value: you're going to ends up staying here cause it's on the cheaper end and given the offerings, the price is pretty great.
Service: incredibly helpful front desk staff, wonderful maintenance personnel, everyone we encountered was friendly and ready to help.
Food: their little restaurant is the hunted down by lots of folks staying at other places along seven mile beach--surprisingly great food at reasonable prices.
I will admit, if I were to return to Grand Cayman I would not stay here again, but that's no knock on sunshine suite--they helped me have such a great time I'd be ready to explore the island in greater depth, not staying at a resort at all.
Finally, I did not travel with my kid, but I would highly recommend sunshine suite for families.

Yes, it's off beach. But rooms are updated, clean, and spacious. Rates are unbeatable other than the Comfort Inn down the street, which is the blandest of bland hotels and not why you'd pay to come to Cayman. You can pay for a beach front hotel like the Ritz, Westin, or Beach Suites, but emphasis on pay. Cayman isn't cheap and the Sunshine Suites offers a little bit of respite from your burning wallet. They have a great semi-outdoor-porch like bar and restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I think the fish tacos are overrated, but others seem to like them. By the way, if you are looking for elderly, ADA access, there are no elevators in the 2 and 3 story rooms - so make sure you request bottom floor.

Room Tip: Choose ground floor if you need elderly or ADA access...no elevators.

Great location, and friendly staff. The room was clean and comfortable bed. I like the double "stand up" shower saves time. We had room 128 located on the ground floor, so we did not have to log luggage up the stairs. Stayed for 3 night and 4 days. Parking was good to right in front of our room.

Room Tip: Ground level

Overall this is a great place to stay. Not fancy, but everything is very clean and the people are great. If you need anything, they are more than willing to accommodate you. Just ask politely. Continental breakfast was good too.

We thought the walk to the beach was a little far and a pain in the butt carrying bags, towels, and lawn chairs. Also there are no umbrellas. If we stay here again we would definitely buy one. We did take the car to Governor's beach and it was wonderful. Very short drive, able to park in the shade and right on the beach.

Really enjoyed the restaurant, the food was great and very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Ground floor is easy with bags, etc.

We booked a last minute, high-season trip to Grand Cayman in late Feb/early March. I don't know how we were lucky enough to get a room at Sunshine Suites, but we did and we couldn't have been happier. The hotel is boutique style and is an excellent value in pricey Grand Cayman. Yes, you do walk across the street to go to the beach and no, you do not have a view of the ocean. However, with a 5 minute walk, you can have the best view of all...the one from your chair with your toes in the sand! We have traveled quite a bit and this isn't a 5 star, luxury resort that takes your breath away. However, it doesn't market itself as such as for what this hotel is, it is definitely 5 stars in its category. Our room was small and basic, but It was incredibly clean and the grounds were well manicured. This small resort allowed us to enjoy an unexpected trip without breaking the bank. For a family, I believe they have larger rooms that would likely better suit the needs of more people. We had one queen bed and a small (but adequate for our needs) kitchenette. The beach in front of the resort is fantastic and the chairs they provide work well. Sunshine Grill is an added bonus! I cannot speak to the pool, as we never used it, but it seemed very nice and basic when we walked through that area. We will visit Sunshine Suites again in the future.
