Our visit to the Cayman Islands was our first introduction to the Carribean - and we weren't diasappointed! A a budget conscious couple looking for a getaway - we chose the Sunshine Suites as a slightly chaper option to staying in a traditional hotel venue.
The Sunshine Suites Resort is laid out in lovely landscaped grounds, right accross the road from famous, and truly beautiful Seven Mile Beach. You can pay so much extra to stay in one of the hotels that backs onto the beach - but a two minute wakl from the Sunshine Suites and your basking in the sun on that very same beach, having paid a fraction of the cost! To us it made perfect sense - especially as when we're on holiday we tend to spend our days sightseeing and our evenings dining out - so we really spend minimal time in the room anyway.

The rooms at the Sunshine Suites are clean, neat and have all you could need. Decor is plain and minimal - absolutely fine - but nothing to write home about. Our room contained a mini kitchen - so if you wanted to you could cook there .. although we didn't . We did utilse the fridge for keeping the odd beer and bottle of wine cool - which we could drink as we showered and got ready to got out each evening.

The bathroom was a little on the small side - but had a shower, bath and a hairdryer - all in nice condition.

There was no safe in the room - but the hotel offer a safe in the reception area for guests to use.

On site there is a nice little pool for guests to use as well as various places to sunbathe and relax. I liked the hammocks in the grounds, where you can go to get out the sun and relax; soaking up the Carribean atmosphere.

We were on B&B board - and breakfasts were nice - if a little repetative. Scrambled egg, muffins, toast, various jams etc - plus juices and coffee.

The on site restaurant/bar was also good fun - with friendly staff and nice cocktails.
The staff throughout our stay in reception and all areas of the resort were friendly and helpful - booking taxis etc when you needed them.

Location of the Sunshine Suites is great. As mentioned, you can walk to the beach in a couple of minutes. The hotel provide beach chairs for you to take with you - but we didn't bother with them as we were happy to lie on beach towels and we like walking to different sunbathings spots, and the beack chairs would have been a drag to carry with us.

We would recommed that you book a hire car while you're in the Caymans - we did and enjoyed our trips around the small but perfectly formed island - the highlight of which was our day out at Rum Point.

The Sunshine Suites and Grand Cayman are a wonderful place to visit and we really hope to return and take our little girl with us!

TOP TIPS: don't miss - The Turtle Farm and Sting Ray City - both unique and fantastic days out!

Hotel was in a great location and only about a 10 minute walk to the local grocery store and also a KFC (if your looking for cheap eats). The restaurant at the resort is very good but if your looking for a greater selection and delicious food which is cheap try Eats Cafe and Legends in the plaza at the road. Breakfast was good for saving on costs, there was a little something for everyone.

Make sure you ask for a room on the ground level as we were first put on the third floor with no elevators, normally this wouldn't be a problem but it is extremely hot in Grand Cayman which made this challenging. Beach is amazing with the clearest water ever! We have travelled a lot and we loved this beach the best! Our last trip was Hawaii two months earlier.

The rooms were very clean and cozy, our bed wasn't the most comfortable but price can't be beat. Keep in mind the safes are not in your room rather kept at the front desk. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I wrote a few things down while we were at the Sunshine Suites that hopefully will be helpful. I would suggest packing ...

Shower cap
Small broom for sand in your room
Large beach towels, hotel supplies them but they are small
Hair towels (twist ones)
No adapters needed, my straightener worked fine
Blanket , if you like to stay warm at night (they have a very thin blanket & sheet on the bed)
Cooler bag (small one to put pop and ice in for beach)
Thermal long sleeve/fuzzy socks (if your hubby likes air on cause its freezing in room although you can adjust by the wall thermostat)
Pack treats for room like Kraft dinner cups & pop tarts, a big bag of doritio chips was 8 bucks American in Grand Cayman. Treats cost more.
No long pants except for plane, trust me, it's so hot you can wear shorts and a tank everynight!
Different assortment of lotions, make sure you wear at least a 30 the first couple days!
Good conditioner for hair
Travel alarm clock (they have a clock but it was weird to use and I was glad I brought one)
Antibacterial wipes in ziploc bag for wiping down converter/light switches etc
Waterproof beach bag
Life vests, we do a lot of snorkelling and I was so happy to have our vests. Best spot in front of Cemetary Beach. I think you can rent on beach but cheaper to bring.
You can borrow umbrellas and chairs from the front desk.

Do not rent a car for more than 1 day. A day rental is about 60 bucks including the 7.50 it costs for a cayman licence. The front desk can set it up for you where the rental company picks you up and drops you off. You do have to drive on the left side but it wasn't bad at all, the hardest part was entering roundabouts to the left. Rental cars have white licence plates! Watch out for these drivers lol. You can take a bus van for 2 dollars american, just walk out to the road and they will honk at you.

Be prepared to have American dollars converted twice or at least it seems so! When you purchase anything and give them a 20 dollar bill they enter it as 16.00 on the register and then they give you your change in cayman dollars!

If your looking for an excellent excursion I would highly recommend Fat Fish Aventures! Do the wave runner, swim with stingrays and snorkel tour. These guys were amazing! Do it early in your trip to set the week off, bring sunglasses and make sure to wear a band or something to keep them on your face. Bring a comb for your hair as well as you do stop for a drink. Also, book the afternoon time as they are less rushed.

Hope this helps! Enjoy

My husband and I have vacationed in Grand Cayman many times with & without family. Each time we visit we stay at Sunshine Suites because we know it’s reliable in quality hospitality, with a staff that is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean & nicely furnished. Towels for the pool are provided at the office, not to mention beach chairs. And if you want to go across the street to the beach you are able to take the chairs & towels with you. The staff will go out of their way to ensure your stay is pleasant-from making dinner reservations, to calling a taxi, to giving you feedback on the local attractions available to tourists. The Sunshine

Bar & Grill is not to be missed for its varied menu. Each item is a delicious treat with something to please everyone’s taste. Our personal favorites are the sliders & the fish tacos. We highly recommend staying at the Sunshine Suites whenever you visit Grand Cayman.

My 11 yr. old daughter and I stayed at Sunshine suites. Cleanliness was very good. Every Employee we encountered was very nice, pleasant and helpful. Our housekeeper Rose is a wonderful person! Their food also very good. My daughter and I enjoyed horseback riding with " Spirit of the West " . Paul is a very nice person, the ride along the beach beautiful, the swim on bare back outstanding! Make this your first excursion. Waverunners were fun. Try to do Sting Ray City when cruise ships aren't there. Way too many people. I would try Waverunners to Sting Ray City instead of cattle boats. We enjoyed a restaurant called" Chicken, Chicken" . " Over The Edge" restaurant on the Northside was good too.All in all, nothing beats an ocean front view. The only draw back is Sunshine Suites is 200 yards away from the beach and you cross a busy road to get to it.

Not knowing anything about Hotels in the area, we chose Sunshine Suites because my wife loved the exterior colors. With the overall Excellent expirience we had with Sunshine, I believe that from now on, all my decisions will be based on Colors ! LOL... The staff made us feel at home, and the restaurant was very good. The pool was nice and clean. We are going to start planning for a family vacation for 2011, and Sunshine will be our pick. Thanks for the great exp. and keep up the good work. I have already told many others that I know of a place to stay in the Cayman Islands if there ever is a need. Thanks again, Martin Reyes
