“Discovery Point Club - Unit 26”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We just returned from a 12 day stay at DPC. It was our first time to Cayman. We had a great time. We stayed in Unit 26 and loved it! It is on the bottom floor with beach access a few steps from your door. The condo was well equipped with everything we needed in the kitchen. The beds were comfortable. There is a washer and dryer in the unit. There was six of us and we had plenty of room. The condo is cleaned daily, except Sunday, and they do a great job! We really enjoyed the beach and we brought our own snorkel gear and snorkeled everyday. We saw beautiful fish and a stingray right in front of the condo! The water is gorgeous! I was a liittle worried about some of the reviews regarding the rocky beach. Don't worry! We did not have water shoes and we were fine. There are sandy parts on either side of the rocky section and not a problem at all to get to. We brought a couple of floats, which we used everyday. They have floats and noodles available if you don't want to bring your own. We had a fantastic vacation and we highly recommend Unit 26!

I'm glad you note that there is no problem with entry to the water for world class snorkeling. The beach is all sand with sand access to the sea. The coral in the water is what makes for the great snorkeling.

The complex is right on the Seven Mile Beach but far enough away from the Cruise Ships and port to be enjoyable. First floor units are the best if you want the most convenient access to the beach and pool. Property was maintained daily and all staff was very nice and helpful. They all go out of their way to be helpful!!! About the beach cabanas. There really is no reasonable reason to allow people to "save" spaces overnight or all day if they aren't there. Many of the "saved" places were empty almost all day. Many times towels and gear were already covering chairs at 6am when I went out in the morning. This is why I don't stay at resorts, so I don't have these issues!! Ollie and her staff should be commended!!! Each unit is individually owned so chose wisely, some are nicer than others or have more amenities. Wouldn't hesitate going back!!

As you say, "Right on the Beach" All condos at DPC are direct beach front. about 75 ft. from the water's edge. No sea, pool, garden view. They also face West so you get the full sunsets!

Wow, what can I say! Had an amazing stay here. The views are impeccable, great cleaning service every day and the beach has a surplus of open chairs to lounge in as well as a few that are covered. The pool seems to be very popular and the location in West bay has prime snorkeling right in front of the apartments! Literally just walk into the water and swim out to seem some great small fish colonies. Couldn't ask for anything else. I would highly recommend getting a rental car however since the location in west bay is around 10 minutes drive away from restaurants and the closest grocery stores

WE agree that the views from the 3rd floor are spectacular. Especially the sunsets! I'm glad your experience with our staff was so positive. DPC prides itself on our staff-guest relations. Thanks for the great review.

We stayed 5 nights in unit 16. Loved the views on the 3rd floor. It was a corner unit with spectacular views from the front and side. This unit is directly in front of the pool, so if you don't like "pool noise" it's not for you. We had no problems with it. The interior of the unit is nice with granite counter tops and stainless appliances. Impeccably clean! The kitchen is well supplied with everything you would need for cooking breakfasts, lunches and light dinners. The beach was never crowded and we always were able to find chairs and an umbrella. The office staff is friendly and very helpful, they even arranged our rental car for us. The master bedroom faces the street, so if you are a light sleeper like me, it may wake you with early morning traffic. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds and a nice attached bath. My 18 year old son chose to never sleep in his bed and slept every night on the screened lanai listening to the ocean! You will need a car to get around the island and to the grocery store. We pretty much agree with the other positive reviews posted here, so I won't rehash. Just know that we will be making plans to visit here again.

We stayed at this condo the first week of July 2014. The condo is beautifully furnished and well-equipped. The beach is fantastic and the snorkeling was awesome. A wonderful quiet vacation spot away (but not too far) from the crowds downtown! The staff is also knowledgeable and helpful. A wonderful vacation!!

Discovery Point (DPC) was a great place to stay. Location was nice - not too close to Georgetown and all the cruise tourists.

Grounds:
We stayed in unit 18, which is on the 3rd floor. It was quiet and comfortable with great views from the balcony overlooking 7 mile beach and the DPC pool and private beach. Speaking of which, the beach at DPC is outstanding. Easy walk into the ocean on nice soft sand. We snorkeled a number of times off this beach. There is a nice reef to see straight out from the unit but not a whole lot else to the left or right. We did see lots of fish and even ran across 40+ squid while snorkeling.
The area is kept quite clean - the outdoor cleaning crew were there every day.
DPC has a couple propane grills that we used that worked out just fine.
The pool is quite nice and has a nice little hot tub next to it. There was a nice mix of families in the other units. We met some very nice people and our son had a good time playing with other kids. The kids ranged from 4 or 5 to 15-16 years of age.

Unit:
The unit itself was pretty comfortable. The units seemed pretty soundproof and we didn't hear a whole lot of noise from other guests.
The master bedroom had a king bed that was quite soft. If you need a firm bed, this is not the bed for you. The second bedroom had 2 twins. The family room couch was comfortable and there was a small table that seated 4 people for eating. There were 3 or 4 bar stools that could be used to sit/eat at the kitchen counter.
The kitchen was fully stocked with all manner of plates, silverware, pots, pans and the like. The refrigerator was clean and the stove, oven, microwave, and dishwasher all worked just fine.

We did notice that you have to keep all food sealed very tightly at all times or these tiny little ants became a nuisance. Do not leave ANY food on the counter or tables. If you spill any crumbs or drinks, clean it up immediately.
The balcony was nice. Good sized with a table with 4 chairs and 2 chaise lounges. Fully screened in so bugs/birds were not a problem.

Some units provided water gear such as paddleboards and the like. Unit 18 had no such items.

We opted to not have the cleaning crew come into our unit, which worked out fine. Be advised that the floor will be quite sandy/dirty after a short time. It's impossible to get all the sand and such off your gear so inevitably some ends up in the condo.
The unit had its own washer/dryer which was great. We didn't have to pack nearly as much and we did 3-4 loads of laundry throughout the week (including towels since we didn't have maid service). Beach towels are provided by DPC and are available from outside the main office on the grounds. Very convenient.

The unit had wifi and the speed was ok. Not great, but acceptable. The strength of the wifi is weak though - it could barely reach into the front bedroom. We turned the TV on once and the channel selection was ok.

The air conditioning worked just fine, but the humidity was still a bit high in the unit.

Getting around:
You will want a car if you stay here. It's about a 20-30 minute drive from the airport and there is nothing within walking distance. There is a grocery store (Fosters) about 2 minute drive north, but there is a nicer Fosters closer to Georgetown (about a 5-10 minute drive). There are numerous beach entry points scattered around the area, including Cemetery beach, which was really nice. You could walk there, but it'd take about 10 minutes if you've got snorkel gear.
It's an easy drive to Georgetown where there are lots of restaurants and touristy stores.

Summary:
I'd stay at DPC again. In all likelihood I'd try a different unit, not because anything was wrong with 18, but I'd like to try a first floor unit next time. The first floor units walk out right onto the beach, which looked nice. The 2nd and 3rd floor units require a short walk around the unit to get to the beach. There are no elevators.
Very nice place to stay!

Just to let everyone know the paddle boards are not owned by individual condos but are supplied by a rental company and can be rented through the DPC office.

We just returned from DPC and had a great time. We loved the beach at DPC. The beach is rocky and full of coral. This makes a great snorkelling spot. The water clarity is amazing! We saw sea turtles, sting rays, lobster, conch, sand dollars, and of course many beautiful fish. We rented a car and traveled to all of the snorkelling spots suggested. We believe that there is no better place than in front of DPC. There are sandy bottom spots throughout Seven Mile Beach. A short walk next to DPC and you can walk and play in the water without rocks.

Recommendations:
1. Pick a ground level unit. We were on the third floor during our stay. The third floor has great views, but it's not fun carrying everything up the stairs. The lower units have easy walk out access to the beach and pool.
2. Rent a car during your stay. This allows you to explore and see some other sites. We really enjoyed Rum Point and Starfish Point.
3. Shop at Cost-U-Less first, before going to local grocery store. This is like a Costco or Sams Club. You do not need a membership! It is just down the road from DPC.
4. Go to the Fish Market in George Town for fresh fish. We went around 11 A.M. and picked up tuna. He cleaned it all up for us to take back to the condo. We made sashimi and tuna steaks--Yum!

Keep in mind:
1. The American dollar is weak in the Cayman Island. It is a set rate of $1 Cayman to $1.25 U.S. Most prices are in Cayman Dollars so remember that when shopping or dining out.
2. There is a 15% gratuity added to dining checks.
3. Dining out in Grand Cayman is expensive. In my opinion, even more expensive than Hawaii. We tried eating out once a day. For a family of four we spend about $80-100 U.S. with tip for lunch and dinner was usually $140-200 U.S. with tip.

I have to conclude by mentioning the grounds and staff. The grounds are beautifully maintained and well kept. The staff was friendly and helpful. If we return to Grand Cayman, we would definitely pick DPC again for our stay.

Thanks for the detailed review. It should be helpful to all. One clarification-when you say "rocky beach" you are referring to the coral in the water not the all sand beach at DPC.
