“Wonderful!”
Reviewed 5 July 2011

What a hotel!!! We had an oceanfront suite that was wonderful!!! Over the top service and rooms were gorgeous, clean and comfortable. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay a great one! Didn't have to lift a finger to do a thing on our own...unbelievable!

Ate at Bar Jack - food was very good and service was quick. Also ate at Seven for both breakfast and dinner. Food was good at both breakfast and dinner and service was exceptional!!!

Definitely try the water sports and equipment - it's free! Tried the water bike and kayak and they were a blast! Saw some rays swimming below us! Water was warm and clear! Can't say enough good things about this place! Will definitely return!

Loved loved loved this place, last time we went to Cayman we stayed at the Westin next door, so glad we decided to stay here this time, pay the extra and stay ocean front, though the walk across the walkway is entertaining, the ocean front view is amazing, service was outstanding, food at BarJacks was very good, we mostly had wine and beer and sat at the bar one night and had a margarita and a mojito which were both very good.
The bar by the lobby is nice to enjoy an afternoon bottle of wine, the servers are very attentive, one night they had a DJ and it was alot of fun. Overall a very pleasant stay, can't wait to go back with the whole family.

Room Tip: the walls are paper thing, kid next door woke us up at 6:00 am screaming out of the top of his lungs

Our family of 4 stayed at this property in late June, 2011 and found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. I will say that because of the Brand and, to some extent, the cost, we probably held it to a higher standard and nothing on its own was particularly egregious.

THE GOOD

- Our reservation was for the Resort side and we were immediately upgraded to the Pool/ Beach side of the property at check in. Granted, it is the "off season," but the effort was appreciated. For convenience purposes, I would recommend spending a little more $ and staying on the Pool/ Beach side if you can swing it.

- The facility was immaculate, indoor and outdoor, and that obviously is an effort with the size of the property.

- The Staff, without exception, was courteous, friendly, and seemed genuinely eager to help with anything. One person was nicer than the next and it added to our trip.

- The Pool and Beach were great. We did not see the stampede for chairs that we have read about in previous reviews.....but again, we were there in the off season

NOT SO GOOD

Individually, nothing that we are complaining about is a show stopper. But, when you are paying $ 95 per day in Resort & Service Fees, all taken together, it was an annoyance.

-"Coconut Phones". The property will distribute iPhone-like devices, at the Pool, to electronically place food & drink orders....great, right? Well, it would have been, if 3 orders, that we did NOT place did not show up at our chairs. You would have thought after we told them about 1 order, it would have been straightened out, but the food & drink orders kept on coming. We had to go to the front desk to make sure none of this hit our bill.....again, this was avoidable.

-Part of your Resort Fee is having access to Floats, Water Tricycles etc. They were extremely understocked with each of these and some were being repaired. Again, it happens, but if you are going to market what you get for "free" as part of your Resort Fee, have some of the water devices ready......and it is off season.....if the place was crowded, which it was NOT, we would have gotten shut out.

- Again, as part of your "Resort Fee," internet connectivity was "free"......my first few days, I felt I had the bandwidth that I would expect in 1994.

- Ate at Periwinkle twice as my young kids wanted to watch the movie (again, a freebie part of your "Resort Fee"). That would be great if they did not steer us to a time an hour in advance of the showing.....and we specifically asked while booking.

- During our 2nd dinner, we noticed that our dinner order was taking an inordinate amount of time.....when we politely asked, only then did they tell us that there was a problem with the "gas" in the kitchen....no explanation beforehand, no offer of a free glass of wine etc. We had a late reservation that night because they were full....when we inquired why the place was half empty, they mentioned that they told THOSE folks about the gas problems so they could make other arrangements.....all the while we are sitting there starving and with no explanation.

-We had to use the dry cleaning service for a shirt that had gotten stained, which was completely our fault. We receive a call the next day that the shirt has been ruined during the washing. Now, they did give a credit and they did give us the other item that we had cleaned.....gratis....and they were very apologetic........but I wanted the shirt, not the credit. Again, innocent and well intentioned mistakes happen, but there were too many of them.....especially when you market the brand of the Ritz caliber.

So, as I mentioned, nothing, taken by itself, was bad.......but they could use some tightening up. This property is expensive, but you know that going in. I could see, potentially, going back to this property......but I do not think $ 800 per night, IN SEASON (say, in February), would be great value

My wife, five year old son and I got back yesterday and we loved the place. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel is beautiful. The beach is awesome! The water is very clear and the water is not rough at all. There are two sides to the hotel, the beach side and the resort side. They are seperated by a fairly busy road, but there is an enclosed walkway and you never leave the hotel. We were in the next to last room on the 4th floor of the resort side, so it was a fair walk, but nothing to complain about. We ate at Bar Jack and Periwinkle nearly every meal and the food and service at both were very good. I did find Cupboard, which is convenience store type place near the beach pool. Each morning I got us some Cokes and breakfast sandwiches there. It was handy. Grand Cayman is a very clean and friendly island and we always felt safe. The island is very expensive and the hotel follows suit, so be prepared and don't let it ruin your vacation!

Stayed here for our second time in March for spring break. Last time was just my husband and I, but this time we had to bring our kids and parents with to show them how wonderful it is. It is such a beautiful area on the beach and the hotel was great although you don't spend much time in it! We stayed club level and the service there is perfect. Spent most of the time on the beach, but a couple times at the pool. Service was terrific both places. Would never stay anywhere else here! ***Have to go to Blue...I could not wait to eat there again and now I can't wait for the next time!!!

Stayed at Ritz Cayman for 8 days in mid-June. The hotel is in an excellent location along 7 Mile Beach on prime beachfront property. To note, I have stayed at many 5-star hotels around the world and have seen my share of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Overall, I rate my experience at the RC Cayman as a 4 out of 5, as the positives do far exceed any negatives. Let's start with the positives. As I said, the beaches and the crystal blue waters off 7 Mile Beach are some of the best in the world and the RC is right in the heart of this. The hotel grounds and interior spaces are very well maintained as one should expect from a 5 star hotel. The staff were very friendly, professional, and aimed to please. The pool area and beachfront were clean of debris/garbage and someone was always there to provide you with towels and to set up your lounge chairs. The hotel room was well above average and the cleaning staff were always there to refresh your room or to provide extra towels.

The big problem I have with the RC Cayman is the "value for money" aspect of it. In other words, do I feel satisfied with the overall quality of what I'm receiving in exchange for the high cost of staying there. And that is my problem with the RC Cayman. The hotel is very expensive, but as a 5 star, it lacked those finishing touches that one should expect. Our room, though nice, seemed to have rather basic furnishings- I just expected "more" out of a RC hotel. The bathroom was a bit dirty in some areas- nothing drastic- and the tv set really didn't work too well. The food served at the hotel was very good and we dined at 3 of the hotel restaurants. However, the prices were absolutely through the roof! Yes, hotel restaurants are more expensive, yes, Cayman is an expensive island, and yes, again, the food was good. But the prices seem to border on the absurd- US$14 for a bowl of chips? Finally, it seems that almost everything has an extra cost to it. You're charged a $45 fee to use the pool/beach/water sports. They say this fee allows you to use their video movie library, however, this just allows you to "look" at the library. Actually renting a movie costs extra.

In summary, this is a very nice hotel in a fantastic location. The staff are great and the hotel itself is very well maintained. For me, the high price they charge did not meet my expectation for what a 5 star hotel should truly deliver. If they were to lower their price by a few hundred dollars, then yes, it would be good value for money. Until then, I hope this helps you in your hotel selection.

First Impression
The hotel is in keeping with the traditional style Ritz Carlton (RC) Hotels (our preference as opposed to the modern RC properties). We were greeted with a nonalcoholic drink which was fine. No cold towel like at the RC properties in Jamaica, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico but that was okay.

The front desk attendants were very professional but not exceptionally warm. However, the staffer from the front desk that showed us our room was fantastic. The bell staff were professional and charming.

Twice a day maid service was top notch. We have small children and whether we left the room at 7:30 am or 1:30 pm, our room was attended to by house keeping while we were away.

When it comes to beaches in the Carribean, Seven Mile Beach is second to none. Let me discuss the beach chair problem that so many guests have written about. People do get up early in the morning to get beach or pool chair setups. The attendants are normally out around seven in the morning. I was often up early and saw people get chair setups and not return for hours. This is not a shortcoming of the hotel but the guests if anyone must be blamed. Afterall, its the Ritz, imagine if a beach or pool attendant said I am not giving you a towel setup unless you are going to use it now.

The Food
We are foodies and have had the privilege to dine at some of the best restaurants in the world, so please consider these comments carefully.
Seven was wonderful for breakfast (good resort style buffet) and dinner.
Barjacks was good and reasonably priced considering where you are.
Perwinkles was great for the kids (outdoor movie and kid's buffet) but our food was not very good.
Blue was world class with world class prices...$460 for 2 adults and two children. (However, definitely 5 star and worth the money if you love fine dining as we do.)
We ate off site at the Copper Falls Steakhouse, Sunshine Grill and Eats Cafe. All were good. The fish tacos at Sunshine Grill were outstanding and the restaurant had a very local feel.
Keep in mind dinner for two adults and two children off site in the Cayman's will still cost between $100 for a very casual meal and a little fancier meal of fish or steak about $150. Alcohol drinks are $11-$17 pretty much everywhere on the island.

Tennis
Illian at the tennis center was one of the best pros I have ever worked with. All of the pros at the Nick Boletteri Courts also appeared to be top notch.

Final Analysis
This is a Ritz so it is not the low cost leader. However, my recommendation is that you should visit and visit often if you can!

Room Tip: Stay on the beach side for a terrific ocean view
