“Amazing Service, Shabby but Elegant Decor, HIGH Prices”
Reviewed 6 November 2011

We just returned from a six-night stay at the Ritz for our honeymoon. First, the bad:
1. Prices are SKY high. Like, $18 US for a pina colada high. Champagne brunch on Sunday was $250 US for two people. We asked the hotel to prepare us two box lunches for our off-shore fishing trip, and it was $63. And the sandwiches were inedible. *sigh* But, when you order that pina colada, get ready - you won't need to drink more than two to catch a solid buzz. After a vodka tonic, you are unsafe around open flames. We left the champagne brunch full of fantastic seafood, beef, desserts, and well, champagne. So, you get what you pay for.

2. The walls are PAPER-thin. On our first morning there, we found this out when the children in the room next door awoke before dawn and had a melt-down and continued to scream and giggle for a couple of hours. After they checked out, we were able to hear the new neighbors every time they so much as coughed. If you are a light sleeper, this is NOT the hotel for you.

3. The decor has an appearance of being well-worn. And not in a "shabby chic" sort of way. Most of the carpet and upholstery is faded, stained, or visibly worn. There is an obvious smell of mildew in many parts of the hotel. But, compared to other properties, the Ritz can at least say it is "faded elegance" rather than cheap and moldy. If you travel to the Caribbean, you expect some odor of mildew - hurricanes are force majeure. 100 m.p.h. winds have a tendency to blow water into places its not going to dry immediately.

Now, the fantastic:

1. The beach is gorgeous. We were in an ocean-front room, and our view was amazing.
2. The service is personalized without being obsequious.
3. The staff is polite and reserved - they leave you alone unless you ask for their help.
4. The other guests are polite and reserved - most of the kids are well-behaved, the guests are appropriately dressed, and at that price point, everyone could handle their liquor.
5. Our room was tastefully decorated, comfortably appointed, and clean.

We chose the Ritz because we wanted a romantic and plush honeymoon, not a budget family vacation. If you're looking for a good value, your looking at the wrong hotel chain. If you want a wonderful vacation during which you need not lift a finger other than to call the front desk, stay at the Ritz. Just expect to pay for it.

Room Tip: Ocean-front is the way to go. But, people keep complaining about how long the walk was from the fro...

Just got back from a week at the Ritz and it was a great stay. Since it was the off season, I found the uncrowded conditions ideal. The room rates were surprisingly reasonable during our week (last of Oct) as well and included daily breakfast and $100/night resort credit. We were there to celebrate our 10th anniversary and the staff went out of their way to to help us celebrate - room upgrade to ocean view, complimentary champagne at Bleu and 7, desserts out of the blue, picture frames, cookies. . . . It was very sweet. The food is expensive, but there are so many options within a few minutes walk that you do not need to feel handcuffed to the resort. Literally within 5 minutes you can go from your beach chair and be at several spots including the excellent Sunshine Grill, Yoshi Sushi, Eats, Legendz or Luca. Fosters is also just a couple minute walk. The restaurant resorts had good specials while we were there in order to attract more off season business including half of bottles of wine at 7 on Fridays and a $95 three course meal including wine pairings at Blue. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. I can't recommend this resort enough.

We were disappointed in our stay at the Ritz Carlton in Grand Cayman after spending a lot of money to get there and pay for our room. We found the furnishing to be somewhat worn and needed replacing. The upholstery was faded and had spots on it. The mattresses especially were very used. They offered to switch mattresses for us instead of rooms (which we found odd). The second mattress was just as worn. Two obvious areas of depression where many people had slept. Never did get a decent nights sleep. The bathrooms were not that clean, hair and dust in corners after maid service.
On the upside, service at the hotel, pool and restaurants, very good. But you pay a lot extra in gratuities added to your bill. Nice location on beach. Lots of good restaurants to walk to. It was the off season so not crowded. I would suggest eating off site. An average drink at the pool was $15. Lounge chairs at the pool very nice and comfortable. Staff and local people very friendly.

Room Tip: Check out mattress before you settle on a room

of course the Ritz is nice...that's no different here than anywhere else. However I will definitely not stay here again. Most of our trip was diving and sitting by pool. The Mariott or Westin will be great for much less money. Money saved will go to diving and dining. The restaurants at the Ritz were CRAZY expensive. Also had some logistical mishaps. They thought it was 1. our anniversary, 2. my wife's birthday, and then 3. my birthday. I was expecting them to say "happy quanza". Also I spent 15 minutes at the front lobby waiting for them to find an envelope which had been dropped off for me. all the time it was sitting at the bell hop desk. i was shocked at the ineptitude of such a small and you'd think a common task!

My wife and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. After staying at various Ritz-Carlton hotels (San Francisco, Half Moon Bay etc.) we decided to stay at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman. It has got to be one of the best vacations of my life. The accommodations were wonderful, the food excellent and the staff very accommodating. Upon our arrival, we were met by a concierge by the name of Reese. Over the next week, he became our personnel host to the island. Nothing was too big or too small for him to take care of. This is one story that will stay with me as long as I live. Thank you very much for a great experience.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms are by far the best. I wish I had enrolled in the rewards program sooner.

Beautiful resort, stayed in a ocean front room, first night on the island stayed a another hotel, second day we moved to the Ritz Carlton. Traveling with my disabled mother in law I can honestly say the entire staff was wonderful to the three of us. The Concierge gentleman "Reece" was the gem of this hotel. He went above and beyond his call of duty to make sure all of our needs were not only met BUT exceeded. He treated us with such kindness, thoughtfullness, and truly cared, and he knows all about the island what to do, dine, everything. Everything about the hotel was a class act. Can't wait to return again. Our trip was PERFECT at the Ritz Carlton.

Room Tip: Our oceanfront room had amazing views!!!!

We're just back from a last minute week long holiday at the Ritz on Grand Cayman. We can't speak highly enough about the property, beach, staff, amenities and food. All was more than we expected. This was my husband’s first trip to the Caribbean and his first “sun holiday” and I’m happy to say it was a huge success. He was very skeptical about going at first. As we were leaving to come home he said “when do you want to come back”!!! Yeah!!!

The staff at the Ritz went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. So many great things to say. Here's a few:

1. Sunday brunch was out of this world and since we arrived at 1pm on a Sunday, it was a great way to start the vacation.
2. Breakfast buffet was delicious and had a large variety – healthy as well.
3. Free valet parking and great recommendations from the doorman
4. The gym had many treadmills and plenty of equipment and was always empty
5. Sauna/steam room/whirlpool was phenomenal (especially since I was the only one using it).
6. We learned so much from a 1 hour wine tasting on a cloudy afternoon. Thanks for teaching us so much about Pinot Noir!
7. Blue restaurant should be Michelin Star rated, it was that good. Staff made you feel relaxed and at ease. The wine pairing was perfect. I could have eaten there every night.
8. The café with free coffee and tea in the morning was a nice touch and had snacks (salads, sandwiches, danishes) if you wanted to get something quick.
9. Being able to book everything right there at the hotel with knowledgeable and friendly concierge
10. You can order a picnic lunch if you are going to take a day trip which I think was a nice touch
11. Small refrigerator in the room had some space if you wanted to get a few things at Fosters
12. Grocery, liquor store, restaurant, cafés and all within 5 minute walk
13. Large bathroom (though under the sink had a musty odor as did the closet)
14. The loungers on the beach were comfortable and allowed you to be shaded if you were trying to avoid the sun. Ladies, bring a hat!! Beach staff so hard working and friendly.
15. We loved when beach staff came around with free juice and ice cold clothes to put on your face – heavenly!!!
16. Free dvd rentals – they had a large, current selection for rainy days or early nights
17. The floating bed, chair/tables, free kayaking, snorkel gear, etc. So easy to use. So much fun.
18. Every meal we had on the island was fantastic. Everything so fresh, tasty and healthy.
19. Loved the Pink Sand drinks at the beach bar. Delicious!
20. We didn’t have to think the whole time we were there. Everything was effortless.
21. It's the best spot on 7 mile beach and the best looking resort.

We had a great holiday. Fantastic. The resort is gorgeous. Though there were no features on the island or about the room that real stood out. The island itself is very flat. From what we saw, there are many strip malls, restaurants, a food store that is very convenient. All very low rise buildings. All clean. It felt very American. Which is fine, if that’s what you are looking for. It made for a simple, stress free, easy, uncomplicated, relaxing holiday. If you want something a bit more exotic then you might want to look at another island.

Recommendations –

Camera: bring/borrow an underwater camera if you are going to do snorkeling or go on the stingray tour.

Snorkel: Silly but true. We got squeamish about using ‘used’ snorkels so we purchased cheap ones at home and brought with us.

Car: We rented a car but didn’t really use it. We like to have a couple of drinks with dinner and we don’t drink and drive, so we found ourselves either walking to restaurants or taking a taxi. And some of the daytrips actually pick you up at the hotel. As for going to Foster’s or the local café, we didn’t mind the 5 minute walk.

Room: The ocean view room and the resort was well worth it for $349 a night. I enjoyed seeing the ocean as soon as I woke up, having a drink out on the balcony, reading on the balcony, watching storms come in, seeing how crowded the beach/pool was. We would not however spend $900 a night to stay here.

Prices: Yep, breakfast is expensive, as is Sunday brunch and drinks. But we knew that before we got there. Once we accepted it, we were fine. Besides, you don’t have to eat breakfast there every morning. Try some of the local places as well.

Would we go back? Yes, but only off season when the prices are reasonable and it’s less crowded…we prefer a quieter holiday and hence often travel during the shoulder seasons. Yes, you take a chance with the weather but when you book last minute like us, you know the forecast.

Looking forward to maybe squeezing in a long weekend before year end!
