This is a great church. The older half is smaller and the new part is well blended creating a double nave. Nice small organ. Recent renovations to rectify a leaky roof had been sympathetically done resulting in an enhanced experienced .
Great cemetery outside with black skate stonework looked good in the unseasonal autumn sun but would look pleasingly dramatic in a storm.
You ought not visit the area without going into the church. It can give the impression of being closed but is open during most days. I do not like reviewing places of worship as they are not tourist attractions for their own sake although some will visit this due to the R.S. Thomas connection (a one time vicar). There is not a lot else in the village if you discount the beach which the church overlooks and the small variety of shops and eating places - although Prince Charles has been a visitor. Slightly off the beaten track and parking could be difficult and costly in peak season however it is well visited by walkers of the Llyn, accessible by bus and notably in season by the small coastal minibus services..
What a delightful church this is and it feels really historical. It just sits here almost on the beach and is a must to go in.
A gem of great value. This small church and graveyard are a once in a lifetime find. At one time R.S.Thomas the Welsh poet was vicar of this church, somehow his presence can still be felt. Don't pass by without stopping, who knows it may just change your life.
A very interesting location, made all the more memorable by a small 8 page booklet available at back of church. Titled ' Sauntering around St. Hywyn's ' ( please leave a small donation to cover printing cost ) even on reading the cover I learned something .
The first paragraph in the booklet says it all. You are invited to take your time, to walk slowly, to tread softly, and to ponder silently. What an invitation in this, noisy ,busy world.
This booklet is amongst the best and most interesting I have come across.
Before you leave, stop outside close your eyes and listen to the sound of the sea
This church is very special, from its ancient walls to its connection with one of our finest recent poets RS Thomas. I love its sense of peace in such a rugged location.
A church by the sea with background music of the waves. A churchyard climbing the hill, packed with wobbly gravestones.
A serious calm interior with the lovely sea reflected light pouring through the windows and the poetry of RS Thomas.
A place to savour and enjoy with a brooding feeling of spirit.
