“Could be so much better..”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

We chose Bird Rock for a couple of days relaxation at the end of a 3 week holiday travelling around Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis. The hotel suited us as it is in a beautiful location and our top floor studio unit with good balcony looking out to sea was spacious and had a ‘kitchenette’. The pool is lovely, large and very clean and the grounds are nicely kept. There were very few other guests so it was certainly peaceful.
We enjoyed our 2 nights but, unfortunately, our overall impression was that this hotel is failing. The staff are good and the whole place is clean but it is obvious that routine maintenance isn’t being carried out; paint is peeling badly, the rooms are getting somewhat tired and some equipment isn’t working properly. The areas that were not open (eg the pool bar, Diana’s restaurant) were messy. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening (we were the only diners) and, frankly, the food was terrible.
We did enjoy our stay and knew that this was a ‘basic’ place before we arrived so were not disappointed. However, there is the potential for this to be an excellent simple hotel in a fabulous location and we hope it is rescued before it is too late.

Room Tip: Worth getting a studio on the second floor for great views and bringing in food.

We made a booking via email and when we arrived at the hotel they were fully booked. At least they had arranged for us to stay at another hotel ( ocean terrace inn) at no additional charge so the only inconvenience was a trip across town and the disappointment of not seeing the hotel we had booked.

I've read the other reviews that have been written on this resort. I would like to add that the service here is very good. It is locally owned, small and caters to couples or families who want to relax. You really have to work at being stressed at the Bird Rock.

I give it a 3 star rating as a relative mark. We have stayed in many hotels/resorts and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel as long as people understand that it is not an all-inclusive offering a 5-star lifestyle.

We only had one issue during our 7 day stay that had nothing to do with the hotel. Our car rental company phoned the hotel on the morning of our rental to inform them, not us, that there was no car for us in spite of pre-booking and using a credit card to guarantee the reservation . One of the young ladies at the front desk, Uma, got on the phone and found a vehicle for us. What could have been a bad experience was turned into a positive one.

As pointed out in some of the other postings this hotel is close to town (20 minute walk) but a bit off the beaten track. So you may want to, at some point, rent a car or a scooter to see the sights. We took a taxi into town on one occasion but walked on another. It is within walking distance (10-15 minutes) of grocery stores and a bakery. Some people booked a guide to drive them around.

Finally the gentleman who is the grounds keeper/gardener takes a great deal of pride in his work. Grounds are nicely kept up although some of the buildings are a bit worn.

Room Tip: We had a room on the front side facing the Caribbean and the view was, well, you have to see it to a...

I was travelling with my husband and young children, so we chose to stay at a different resort with lots of kids activities etc… but I did all of my diving at Bird Rock (hubby doesn't dive) and it is easily one of the best dive operations in the Caribbean. Tony is an AMAZING Dive Instructor. Very thorough daily dive plans, etc.. and gorgeous dive sites. Super knowledgable and really nice. If you're travelling to St. Kitts, highly recommend the dive team at Bird Rock - you won't be disappointed.

The location is great and the view from the second floor balcony is excellent. We loved sitting out in the morning, drinking our coffee and watching the cruise ships dock. Also good for watching sunsets over the Caribbean. The accommodations are very basic with mismatched furniture, but we looked at this as a cottage. On arrival our AC and TV did not work and there was no hot water. The staff come out very promptly to fix items. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The TV gets about 5 channels and is something from my parent's time. The place definately needs some TLC as our room had not been renovated for some time (although the fridge and stove appeared to be new).
We never went for dinner as the dining room in the evenings was always empty. We did have snacks at the beach bar and they were OK. We enjoyed our stay as the resort is small and we met people that we chummed with and went out for dinner. The resort is a bit isolated and required a cab ride for the nice beaches and restaurants.
If you look at this as a rustic cottage, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Request a room on the second floor -- they all have balconies and the view is excellent. Get a kitc...

The resort needed some TLC but the staff was courteous and accommodating. I would rate the resort as very good but the Dive crew was totally 5 star!
I was in St. Kitts for a scuba diving vacation and I cannot praise the team at Dive St. Kitts enough. They were fantastic! Service was beyond my expectations. Dive team was knowledgeable, professional and enjoyable to be with. I highly recommend them! A big thanks to Tony, Danny and the Captain!

Bird Rock Beach is the perfect place for anyone looking for a relaxed and peaceful environment in a beautiful setting.
The good stuff- The hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood overlooking the water, the city, and the port. The grounds are well maintained with beautiful greenery and flowers. A set of stairs winds down to a tiny beach/sandy area and beach bar. There is a tiny bay protected by rocks so the water is clear, calm, and shallow for wading and swimming. You can snorkel right off the shore. (Bring your own gear if you have it. We had to go to the front desk to have them track down someone to get the gear. They did and were very casual about letting us use it for a few days.) It is fairly rocky so water socks would be helpful. True, it is not a beach as you may expect but there are rarely many people there. The privacy and quiet is great. We watched the sun set each evening from a small raised deck. Again very few people to spoil the relaxed vibe. One day we had the area to ourselves for most of the day. We saw the beach at the Marriot while driving. It is much larger but we saw 3 rows of what had to be about 50-100 beach chairs. IMO a smaller, quieter area is better.

The pool was clean and good sized. It was on a hill overlooking the water. Again, very few people very quiet. I wouldn't have expected the swim up bar to be open. It would have been easy to pop down to the beach bar for a drink or bring something down from the room. One evening we brought down a bottle of wine and the front desk ordered a pizza for us. We had the pool and patio to ourselves.

One of the restaurants was opened each day from 7 a.m- 9 p.m. We opted for the continental breakfast most days. They had a nice menu including pancakes, coconut french toast, cereals, egg dishes, and local dishes. The menu at lunch was a good sized varied menu of salads, sandwiches, fish, snacks etc. The fish burger and veggie burger were great. In the evening there were a few specials, a soup, and changing sides in addition to the lunch menu. I would have loved if there was a vegetarian special each night. They were accommodating when I was looking for something different and served rice and beans with a delicious salad and veggies. The prices were comparable to the other places we ate at on the island. Prices on the island, in general, were a bit higher than some other islands we have visited. Service was understated yet welcoming which I prefer to pushy service.

We had a car but did walk into town a couple times. It was about a 30-35 minute walk. Not much between the hotel and town. There is a store that's a quick drive or close walk from the hotel. They have beer, wine, fruit, cereal, snacks, and lots of regular grocery items and some drug store items.

The not so good- When we checked in they offered to show us 2 rooms. When we entered the first room it was as I expected. However, the sliding doors opened up to the kitchenette and the balcony was off a side door. The balcony was tiny- about 2.5 x 5.5 feet. You could barely fit 2 chairs on the balcony and one person kind of had to climb into the chair. You really were sitting one person in front of another. This room also pretty much looked at the back of another building. You would have to work to see the water. The second room had the same set up but luckily there was a better view of the water, town, and the port. I told myself there probably were other rooms like this, maybe all kitchenettes had this set up, and the hotel was probably full. The next day I realized that those were the only 2 rooms with the set up and the hotel didn't appear to be full. Since I had booked 9 months in advance I was hoping for a better room. We were above the kitchen and smells and a bit of noise filtered up to the room occasionally. Now, our neighbors were very noisy and disruptive (no fault of the hotel) and were always in their room. This didn't help the situation. Our last night they were gone and all of a sudden our room didn't seem so bad. The kitchenette did have a large window and the room had 2 extra side windows to let in a lot of light. We also were offered continental breakfast which I am grateful for. Next time I would be specific about not wanting room 401. We ended up in room 406 and would be willing to stay there if that was all that was available or if a price adjustment was made rather than choose another hotel.

We loved Bird Rock Beach and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Avoid room 401. Kitchenettes are nice at least for the fridge and microwave.
