“Delicious breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2014

We were staying at a nearby cottage so we decided to take the walk to the Hermitage for breakfast on a beautiful sunny day. The property is beautiful, with small gingerbread cottages scattered around. The service was top notch. I had intended to order something light, such as fruit, but when I saw "toasted coconut French toast" on the menu, I immediately changed my mind. It was delicious! My husband ordered the West Indies omelet, and said it was very good as well. It was served with homemade sausage which he liked.

Loved all of the little gingerbread bungalows scattered all over the plantation. The lobby, living room, bar, etc. are decorated beautiful and made me feel like I was stepping back in time in New England where I grew up. They were roasting a whole pig on a spit at the time and it smelled wonderful!

This was my fourth trip to Nevis, I have always stayed at the Hermitage both in the small delicate cottages on the property and once in one of their smaller rooms. This year, I rented the manor house over Christmas with my grown daughters and I can say it was one of the top five trips of our lives! the entire staff cannot do enough for you, the food is excellent, the small charming mahogany bar serves the best fresh rum punches on the island. The clientele at Hermitage have mostly been coming for years and everyone is absolutely delightful. We are already booking for next year and my grown Manhattan daughters had the time of their lives!

Room Tip: you cannot go wrong here, each cottage is situated for privacy and comfort, its pure charm at a clas...

The Hermitage is a great place to stay on Nevis if you like being surrounded by nature. It's located in the trees, part way up the side of Mount Nevis. We were delighted to see many Green Vervet Monkeys at The Hermitage during our stay, as well as goats and sheep along the nearby roads and trails. We enjoyed a short walk from The Hermitage to explore the Nevis Botanical Garden. Our Treetop Up unit was perfect, featuring a balcony with views of the Caribbean Sea and comfortable reading chairs with good lighting for any rainy days. We borrowed books from the library, located in the main building, and enjoyed great rum punch near the bar each night before dinner. We ate all of our breakfast and dinner meals at The Hermitage and were consistently delighted with the food and service. During the day, we took taxi rides around the island to explore. We appreciated The Hermitage arranging for transportation from the airport on St. Kitts to the boat that brought us to Nevis and for the final ride to The Hermitage. They also made the return arrangements to the St. Kitts airport. The experience couldn't have been better!

Our lasting memory of arriving at St Kitts Airport was the welcome we received from Immigration and, in particular from Customs staff, to the islands.
After 20 Hours of travel, home to hotel, we arrived at The Hermitage at 8pm and received a very warm welcome from Reception and from Richie, one of the owner’s family. He showed us to our accommodation and pointed out the bar, Dining Terrace, main house and pool. We asked when the Dining Room closed, since we had arrived relatively late in the evening, and were pleased to be told that the staff would be there until we had finished dinner. We had a brief one course!
After a very comfortable night’s sleep, we woke to a slightly overcast sky. The first breakfast anywhere is always somewhat of an unknown entity, but the staff were extremely helpful and friendly as were the other resident and non-resident breakfasters. For the rest of our first day we were content to sit on our verandah enjoying the periods of sunshine between the clouds and to explore the beautiful gardens of The Hermitage. Unfortunately, the next five days were largely wet and stormy with a few brief spells of sunshine. However, this allowed us to enjoy the atmosphere and comfort of the Old House over afternoon tea and a rum punch or two! Run down and back up between the downpours! Thankfully, the weather improved on the day (Monday) of our Nevis Island tour which Reception had arranged for us (with Champs as our driver – SUPERB!). On the Wednesday we took the ferry to St Kitts where our driver ( Solomon, also arranged by the hotel) gave us an exceptional tour of the island. If you are taking the ferry over and back, you need to know that you need 2 tickets each way. One is for the journey itself and one is for the upkeep of the Ferry Terminal. On Nevis these are sold at separate windows! On St Kitts you get them from the same window.
Sad to say, from that evening on, our experience at The Hermitage took a distinct turn for the worse. During the ‘Pig Roast’ dinner that night our room was broken in to with the theft of a few hundred dollars. Thankfully, only cash was taken. Access had been gained by raising the storm shutter, cutting through the insect mesh on the outer window frame and then easily forcing open the inner glazed window. The owners did seem truly shocked at this and did the best they could to secure our room for that night. On the following morning, security chains were installed on all of the 3 vulnerable windows in our accommodation. We sought to be stoical about this (no one was physically harmed……!), but no guest in a hotel should EVER fear for their security or safety. We were not offered the option of moving to another room. We later learned from other visitors to Nevis and from friends who have lived in the Caribbean for many years that this form of crime is common! We also discovered that this current increase in petty crime/burglary is on display as part of the Nevis Museums’ exhibition on current affairs. We were very surprised at this as everyone we met when we arrived on St Kitts and Nevis told us how safe the islands were!!!
Our accommodation (Tower Down) was very clean and well maintained by housekeeping staff. Towels were changed daily and the pool towels changed daily, or as you required. Bed linen was changed every couple of days. Toiletries (Shower gel, Shampoo and soap) are provided. Each room has a small safe which is key operated (just make sure you have somewhere safe to keep it!). The safe is fine for document wallets, purses etc but not big enough for tablets, cameras or other electrical or similar goods. Electricity is 110 volts and they use the US flat pin type plugs. Tea and coffee facilities are provided in the rooms. One surprising omission is a guest information booklet. There is a telephone within the room but no internal directory or information on how to access emergency services.
Breakfast is usually served from 8am but on a Sunday seems to be from 9am. It became quite entertaining to find out what would happen each morning! Some days it was all table service, some days it was full buffet (even midweek for no apparent reason) and some days it was half and half! Every morning, though, the staff did tell you what was the system on any given day. Evening meals were all a 4 course fixed price menu, sometimes with the option of a Pizza Menu. On a Wednesday it was The Hermitage ‘Island famous’ Pig Roast Buffet. A heaving table of hot dishes and salads was on offer and repeat visits seemed to be the norm. There was a no smoking policy on the dining terrace. However, on some evenings, mostly when there was a high percentage of non-resident diners, cigar and cigarette smoke could pervade the dining area.
The pool area we have to say was quite disappointing. There were only 5-6 sun loungers (one was taken out of service while we were there) and these were very old and beginning to rot. The mattresses for the sun loungers were stained and showed signs of mould in places particularly along their seams. There were other hardwood pool chairs and tables and several wrought iron tables and chairs around the pool area. The pool was cleaned every few days, but unfortunately, because of the high winds, there was always debris from the trees and surrounding vegetation in the pool.
There was a comprehensive library within the main house from which you could borrow. The cottages have TV’s but the rooms do not. If you need a TV there is one within the main house in a side lounge.
Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout the property but can be temperamental dependent on the weather.
If you enjoy wildlife, you will love watching the troupe of monkeys (we counted 24 in one troupe), the goats, egrets and other birds and butterflies in the gardens. The hotel owners also rescue horses, so do not be surprised if you see some thin ones around – they do look after them very well. Had the weather not been so erratic we would have organised a trek. Reception will do this for you.
The final segment of this review has been the most difficult to compose of all those we have previously submitted to TripAdvisor, hence the delay in posting this.
We note in Fodor’s 2013 Caribbean Guide that one of the Pro’s for the Hermitage is “The delightful owners and clientele. This is certainly true of the family and of MOST of their clientele. In over 35 years of travel worldwide and using similar style accommodation in small groups, or, for the most part independently , we have always been able to find common ground with fellow guests from all social strata and from various nationalities. This has afforded us the opportunity to exchange experiences and anecdotes. Some of these meetings have resulted in continuing long distance, but more importantly, long lasting friendships.
At the Hermitage, there were times when we felt that we were looked apon as intruders at some private country house party. The most basic of greetings – Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening to some guests were at best ignored, at worst rebuffed. Combined, we have 60 years of experience in Health Care and are able to intuit and lip read. A comment from one dinner guest (overheard and lip read) “What are they doing at The Hermitage” seems to sum up the Island view, if not the Hermitage view. This was not the only occasion on which we overheard similar comments being made. We have never felt so conscious of our Regional accent, nor of being dismissed as unworthy guests because of this.
To Richie and staff…… we are sorry for the overall review which we have posted here. We know that most of the negative impressions we have are outwith your influence. Unfortunately, everything about our stay on the island has coloured our view of Nevis. We enjoyed our discussions with you about music and also our exchanges around the ingredients and execution of your dinner dishes. We regret to have to say that our lasting impression of The Hermitage, notwithstanding all of your excellent qualities, is of feeling uncomfortable. Beautiful as the islands of St Kitts and Nevis are, we did not ever really feel that we were in the relaxed and friendly Caribbean as we have previously known it.
We would also like to thank you again for making up our loss from the burglary.

We stayed at the Hermitage in November 2012. Been meaning to write a review, but kept forgetting to do so until now. We spent 10 days there and it was paradise. We stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage and it was delightful. No A/C in any of the cottages, but it was never a problem. Breezes were great and we had fan in our room, so it was very pleasant. We would sit on our screened in porch every morning and the families of monkeys come out of the jungle.....amazing! The grounds are beautiful. The staff was so helpful. The restaurant is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Breakfast was superb! Such variety and I think we tried everything. When we travel, we like to explore and try different restaurants, but their restaurant was so good that we ate 8 of our 10 dinners there. The menu changes nightly. Loved it! We rented a car and drove all over the island. Nevis is a small island with abundant beauty. Found the locals to be very friendly. Would highly recommend Nevis and the Hermitage. Definitely want to return.

My family and I have had the pleasure of two stays at The Hermitage- in 2011 and 2010. It is a special special treasure of a hotel. Fully authentic. Warm. Real. Open. Caribbean. You ARE staying in someone's home/estate. Forget swim-up bars. Forget kids clubs. Forget TV. Forget nonsense. The Hermitage is about good food. Walking in the mountain (and amazing and challenging running on the mountain). Reading books. Playing chess at sunset. Spending time with your kids. Nevis is the Caribbean as your dream it might be, dream it might HAVE been. It still is- at the Hermitage.
