“Island Oasis on a Bustling Island”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

The last review I wrote for this property was almost 10 years ago when hubs and I got married there! Therefore another review is warranted.

Since that time, we have retired and moved to St.Vincent. We enjoy popping over to Y.I. either for a lovely supper, to spend a day, or for special occasions, a night or two.

Our favorite cottage is #3. It is right on the beach; the sea is literally just a few steps from the door. It has a secluded sitting area and a great covered hammock. The pool is close-by as are the outdoor eating areas. The cottage itself is breezy and cool and has everything you might need; a fridge, a king sized bed, big closet, a desk and of course the ''famous" outdoor shower. Soap and shampoo are provided as are beach towels.

The food at Y.I. has never disappointed us, and I am very particular when it comes to food. The dishes are changed frequently and are presented with artistic flare. Their home baked breads are still being served and are sinfully delicious.

Staff at Y.I. are some of the best on the Island. They are friendly and gracious without being in your face or artificially over friendly. Same goes for the management and front desk staff.

Do walk around this little isle and become familiar with the local flora and fauna. If you're lucky you may get to see the family of agoutis. Have a chat with the (near extinction) Vincy parrots they have near the office. They provide a great wake up call on most mornings! The view from top of the isle is just lovely. And if you're lucky, you can witness some magnificent sunsets on Sunset Point.

Y.I. is the perfect destination for those who want to de-stress and simply relax. Ther is no TV, no hyped up animation staff, no organized activities. Having said that, should you wish to do some sightseeing, diving, or spend time on a sailboat, the staff will be more than happy to assist you with this.

The only complaint I want to make from our last visit was the noise from the ''mainland''. Unfortunately, there is a rather LOUD Kareoke bar right across the channel. Sound carries wonderfully well over water. We could hear every word from every horrible song that the patrons ''sang''. This noise went on until 3am. Add to that the constant, relentless barking of the island's numerous, heartbreakingly sad stray dogs, and well...bring earrplugs or perhaps one of the cottages further up the hill would be a bit quieter at night.

Please feel free to email me or message me via Tripadvisor. Since we live on the island I may be able to answer some of your questions that other travellers may not.

Room Tip: Cottages 3-6 are right on the beach. However, much of the beach near cottage 6 and beyond has been de...

On a recommendation of a friend we travelled to Young Island. On arrival at the small pier that takes you over to this idyllic place you get you first view of this very special island. As you step onto the island you are greeted with a welcoming rum punch and taken to reception to carry out the basic formalities. You are delivered to your cottage and so the relaxation begins.

Your every need is taken care of and if there is anything you require it is no problem for the wonderful staff to acquire it for you.

The pool is only to be described as swimming in a lovely warm bath surrounded by an abundance of beautiful trees, plants, flowers and very relaxing. You are only a few yards from the sea if that's what you prefer.

On the beach you have the choice of sun beds, shaded hammocks, water sports equipment and a swim-up bar.

There is very good selection of food which is beautifully prepared by the resident chefs and delivered to your table with a smile by the wonderful staff. The homemade ice creams and sorbets change daily and are to die for. Every meal is accompanied by a choice of freshly baked (and often still warm) bread. The varieties include coconut and cinnamon which were particular favourites with our kids.

If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing place to escape from it all then look no further. Visit Young Island.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Young Island. Beautiful island and views and lush vegetation. Large cottage, plunge pool, sunsets from sunset point, beach, etc.

Cottage 6 was awesome and was somewhat isolated as it only had another unit on one side with the other side facing the ocean.

Young Island resort is a throw back to a simpler time...when one went to a place to relax, enjoy, eat and drink a little...to enjoy fine food (really quite fine), the weather and just relax...as in chill to the max. Other reviewers are correct, if you are going to Young Island for night life or shopping adventures, you have chosen the wrong island.

The employees of Young Island are island friendly, hard working and earnest. The close staff and island wonderful. Remember, they are working on island time not New York time...but they are happy to assist and caring.

The food choices are wonderful. The cuisine is unlike most islands and is much more upbeat and stateslike. This is meant to be a compliment. One never loses weight while visiting... never.

Young Island resort will not be around forever...enjoy it while you can...my wife and I have gone there for our "honeymoon" many many times. Once there, you will wish to return again.

Room Tip: The beach rooms and fantastic and if you do not mind the walk and the steps...the cottages on the to...

Wife and I took a long weekend off on Young Island to celebrate a big anniversary at end of August 2013.

We ended up in an upgrade (cottage29) near the top of the hill. Views were spectular: district of Villa to the north and island of Bequia to the south-east.No AC, but at that level ,the breeze is always blowing. Downside: 123 steps, so be careful if you are a cardiac case.

Menu selection is small: admittedly it's low season, and the hotel is far from full. but you do get four courses. Fish is well prepared - almost never overcooked. Bread is not as "artisanal" as in past years.Soups are consistent, if not exciting. Red meats will be well done, unless specified. Desserts a little dull, save the "molten lava chocolate brownie" and the ginger sorbet. For something different , try the lime yogurt in the morning. Cocktails are good value on Young Island.

Rooms are well maintained, but have that "60's" look and feel. Actually, that's the attraction for us. If we have one recommendation, put a bottle of wine in the room fridge.

Staff are well trained and effective, in all areas. The "friendliness factor " is best in reception/front office and the ferry to the mainland ( two areas when you want staff to be welcoming). The restaurant staff need to smile more, as service is so critical in this area. Bar service can be inconsistent.

All in all, not a perfect "10", but dammed close. Real good value compared to similar lodgings in the Grenadines proper.

Room Tip: If you have a special occasion, spring for the cottages with the plunge pools. If tropical humidity...

I went to Young Island twice for lunch and to spend the afternoon with family and friends. A minute ferry ride across from the mainland, it was perfect as we were staying in the Villa area. The beach is beautiful and you immediately feel relaxed and in a special retreat once you step foot on the island. The prices for lunch was reasonable and you can also order smaller snacks such as french fries and sandwiches. The bartenders are friendly and make delicious cocktails which are also at a great price. The beach, the hammocks, the drinks, the scenery, the view. Definitely my favourite place in St. Vincent now. I can't wait to go back, a must visit every time I'm in St. Vincent from now on. Note it is advisable to make reservations in advance. Also note lunch ends at a certain time so inquire about that if you are interested in having lunch.
