We have today returned from a wonderful two week stay at Sugar Reef. Landing at dreary Gatwick was a complete contrast to our superb holiday.

We have visited other Caribbean islands and hotels but none match Bequai and Sugar Reef This really is an affordable boutique hotel with an air of the old Caribbean. Nothing old about the rooms and stylish facilities though. Great thought and design has gone into the decor but it is the staff that make or break a business and everyone at Sugar Reef was warm, welcoming and extremely helpful. Emmett the owner is on hand daily to keep an eye on things and led by example as we saw him helping out in the restaurant, behind the bar and even mopping up a spillage.

Our room was one of the beach front ones and exactly as shown in the photographs. The first class toiletries are a super gesture and the cleanliness of the rooms simply stunning. We were lulled to sleep by the ocean and ate our breakfast gazing at it. The food was delicious and deserves a separate review in TAs restaurant section.

What more can we say a dream destination that we will definitely visit again.

Room Tip: We visited French House and again the accommodation was first class but the beach front room are a m...

We stayed at Sugar Reef for our honeymoon in December ,2013. The welcome was warm, beach villa luxurious, the views at the French House amazing and staff were friendly and very helpful. A couple of days before we were leaving, a new chef was brought in as well so expect even more delicious food is on its way.

Thanks again for all of your recommendations, help and daily lunch on the beach!

Room Tip: Choose a beach villa if you can. The waves are very soothing at night.

Best clean, relaxing, inn we have ever visited. The staff is great, the chef makes great local cuisine, as well as international. Hemmet the owner, and his wife Heather are the warmest persons we have ever met in the hotel business. Sugar Reef is the place to stay in Bequia .

Consider that inn as a ten

We stayed for a week in a beach side room at Sugar Reef. The location is a dream. Quiet, beautiful, and on a beach that is beautiful and almost always empty and, therefore, ALL YOURS! The staff (ask for Javal!!) at Sugar Reef is amazing! Every single person was incredibly helpful, knowledgable, friendly, and accommodating. The chef is TOP NOTCH. Everything we tried on the menu was superb but def recommend the tartare and all of the soups! If you stay anywhere else on the island and only drop by for a meal- you will be sad! You need the whole experience- stay, play, and EAT at Sugar Reef! The town is easy to reach and only a short taxi ride away that will arrive shortly after you call (ask for Gideon Taxi Co! They are wonderful!) And not to mention- the owner (Emmet) of Sugar Reef is basically the coolest dude on earth. If we could give this hotel 5,000 stars we would!

Room Tip: If you want to dive in the ocean as soon as you wake up- stay in a beach room! French House rooms if...

So often, the hotel experience does not live up to the expectation created by the website. But our four day stay at Sugar Reef was a total delight and far exceeded what we had anticipated.

From the moment of arrival in the Great Hall with the wondrous view over Crescent Bay and the very warm welcome from the owner and his delightful manager to the time of our departure, we enjoyed so many different aspects of this enchanting place. Our beachside room was superbly appointed as described by previous guests and we very much appreciated the generous supplies of the gorgeous Antica Farmacista toiletries.

Sugar Reef is deservedly proud of their green credentials and we were most impressed with their water management from rainfall and well sources. Bottles of chilled drinking water from the rainwater source were available whenever asked for and the water was of excellent quality. Food is sourced as locally as possible with great emphasis on showcasing the superb fish, lobster, fruit and vegetables. Breakfasts taken overlooking the morning sunshine on Crescent Bay were superb with a different arrangements of fruit plates, flavours of homemade yoghurt with estate honey and varieties of pumpkin and carrot cake, served with excellent coffee. We ate both lunch and dinner and I have posted a separate review of these to the Restaurant review site.

Wifi ( albeit rather slow but very adequate) was available in the Great Hall and the Beachfront rooms. Relaxing in the Great Room was delightful with the soft breeze, books to read or games to play, The elegant furnishings show wonderful attention to detail and the huge driftwood hanging lamps and surrounds to the mirrors are stunning.

The restaurant opens to the public from 11am, when most days a number of guests came in for lunch and to laze by the ocean. But for guests in the beachfront rooms, there is a separate area with sun beds and hammock so never any pressure of finding somewhere to take in the views or laze in the sunshine.

Emmett, the owner, was usually around and friendly to everyone in a very understated way and all the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful, always remembering guests' names and preferences.

Swimming in the bay was really good and there are bikes and a kayak available as well as snorkelling equipment. Walking locally was very easy with the walk to Port Elizabeth taking around 50 minutes. Taxi drivers were very helpful and we found it brilliant to have a tour around the island by taxi where the driver gave us lots of local information on the history and geography of the island.

Our only regret was that we had not booked longer!

Stopped for drinks on the beach twice during our stay in Bequia. It is a most attractive facility smack dab on the beach, with attractive clientele, friendly staff and great cocktails. It's in a superb location, close to the turtle sanctuary and easily accessible to all Bequia venues.

We stopped by for a wonderful lunch. Kids had lasagna, which was very far from the standard “Garfield” lasagna: delicious vegetarian lasagna spinach with goat(?) cheese. As we were tired of lobster we had a spinach and chicken salad, which, here too, was way above standards. We also highly recommend the passion fruit mousse.
The hotel was “upgraded” in 2013 and actually we should read “re-built from scratch. It is simply marvelous in world-class scenery and decorated with delightful taste. The exceptional photos on their web site still hardly reflect reality.

Room Tip: As we didnt sleep there we cannot comment fully but what we saw is exceptional. No Fitness center, b...
