“Home from home in a truly stunning location”
Reviewed 27 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We stayed at Las Tortugas for five nights in early February for Carnival in Carriacou. This is obviously a much loved home which has been thoughtfully equipped and beautifully decorated, rather than just a rental property. The position on a hillside overlooking Paradise Beach (the best in Carriacou) is absolutely stunning, with views of the tiny white sand Sandy Island in the foreground and beyond to Union Island and many other islands in the Grenadines chain, shimmering in a beautiful turquoise sea. It's probably THE best view we have ever rented! The villa comes with a free car which was great for exploring, shopping and going out to dine. The house is staffed by the wonderful Godfrey, lovingly known as our "house-husband" who came in every morning to do the dishes, make the bed and keep everything shipshape. He was a mine of information and his lovely wife Leslie-Ann took us food shopping in Hillsborough on our first day and helped settle us in. She even managed to purchase a noodle for us for the gorgeous infinity pool as we had left ours behind. The house has a Mexican flavour with bright bed coverings and tablecloths, and lots of wonderful murals and beautifully hand painted fish and turtles on furniture, walls and even a guitar. Being on a hillside meant it caught the breezes even in the middle of the day, so we didn't use the a/c once. We highly recommend this villa which is one of a very few on Carriacou that features a pool. I can honestly say that everyone who has seen our pictures of the view has said "wow" and we have some pretty well travelled friends! We plan to return.

“New Mexico comes to the Caribbean to Create Nirvana”

First things first:

(1) All the pics , if anything, understate the reality when you're here in person; you'll have more than one OMG moment from the views and serenity provided.

(2) While Las Tortugas is ideally designed for 2 couples visiting, my wife and I took advantage of the offer for just one couple to visit at 75% of the full price; Also, if staying for a week or more as we did, a rental car is included which should be factored into any cost comparison you're making to alternative lodging in the region . (E.g., just a basic room on a beach at a 4 star hotel on Grenada proper would actually run as much if not more, in season.)

Now to its unique features (beyond fantastic views, pool, great easily accessible beach):

Las Tortugas is a very thoughtful purpose-built design, stylistically unique to the area (based on New Mexico haciendas , w/ a slight nod to Greece with the whitewash w/ blue accents), and imaginatively furnished and decorated in in a thematically elegant fashion. Artwork is not slapdash; it reflects a consistent effort to collect integrated pieces. All in all, the villa reflects speaks as a work of love by the owning family who --to my understanding -- spend at least several months a year here.

The location on the hillside ensures two key attributes:
(1) TOTAL Privacy , both visual and sound -wise. The exception is that you can still hear the waves lap the shore late at nite.
(2) Wonderful sleeping temps. While there are A/C's in each bedroom, I can virtually guarantee you won't need then, at least 'in-season." And I say that as one who always wants it cool when going to sleep. There is a constant breeze flowing off the deck into the bedroom ; on 2 nites strong enough that we closed to window slats to keep the bedsheets from ruffling. We only once even turned on the overhead fan.

In making arrangements to book and stay , Paul H. is incredibly quick to respond in detail to the smallest question. Called to check on us while there to make everything was to our liking.

Though Paul is likely not on-island while you're there, he has 'his man Godfrey' charged with taking care of you.: picking you upon arrival, helping you local driver's license, arranging day trip to Sandy Is., showing you around the one way figure-8 loop of streets "downtown' as I asked of him. Godfrey also shows up every day to clean kitchen, baths , change linens on a regular basis, and help in any other way he can. It like having your own personal concierge. Godfrey is very personable -always pleasant - and has worked w/ the family since the villa's construction days in 1999 or so, and ever since has taken care of the place in the owner's absence. Very good to have as a ready resource.

On Tyrrel Bay - 5minutes by car-- there are 2 very good restaurants ( Slipway and Lazy Turtle) and 2 Dive operations (we chose the smaller Arawak Divers and had the dive boat to ourselves 2 mornings in a row -would recommend).

With all that said, there is one unavoidable downside perception: Carriacou's location and connecting flight/ferry schedules simply do not permit you to get there from the U.S. or Europe in just one day. You have to stay a nite before and after on Grenada. No getting around it. Having ventured to many hard to get to places over the years as well as many more easily accessible destinations, I , for one, have adopted the adage: " The harder a place is to get to, the more likely it is to surpass your expectations." I suggest the easiest way for you to test the wisdom of that statement: BOOK Las Tortugas!

“Truly a million dollar view”

Another couple and my family and I stayed at Las Tortugas in December it was the most beautiful and amazing trip. We loved the views. The house is fully equipped with everything you need. We had use of the car to drive into town or go out for dinner. The private beach was awesome. We took a walk down the beach and enjoyed a cold drink in a cute little beach bar. However cooling off in the infinity pool with a glass of wine was my favorite way of spending the day. There are two master bedrooms one on either end of the house with its own on suite. There was also a double bed in the loft space. Downstairs there were built in couches and a ping pong table which was fun.
