Owner description: Also called Brian Lara Promenade, this crowded area runs the width of the center of Port of Spain.

I wandered throug here on a Sunday afternoon and was later scolded by my Trinidad hosts for taking such a large risk. It was cluttered with homeless and some unfriendly locals. If you want to stand on the sidewalk and look at a KFC there are nicer places. There were some street merchants along a neighbouring street, but that was all.

If you want to see the heart of POS then visit but other than walking up the square it is a typical busy city centre...lots of traffic, people about and noise. You go once, you have been. Interesting fact we were told was that the KFC there is the one that makes the most in the world for KFC. Interesting.

Only Trinidadians will appreciate this place.... as a visitor arriving by plane do no go out of you way, however if you arrive by boat then its right there across from the port. It is transit area filled with people heading to the various transit points (bus & taxis). walking its length gives you an idea of what our downtown is like. Unfortunately there are homeless people who seem to be fixtures there and the public restrooms are much to be desired. I will not visit there at night and during the day be mindful of persons around you. Do not got with jewelry or excessive money tourists you stick out like a sore thumb so be alert. Independence Square and Brian Lara Promenade is the same place

I love Independence Square because of it's history and because it is at the heart of everything in Port of Spain. No matter if it's Carnival or liming on an evening. It doesn't matter because it is always busy. From the Waterfront to the Catholic Church it is all reclaimed land, which is why when heavy rains fall Independence Square floods.

The Twin Towers is the most fascinating building for me because of it's structure. It is practically an iconic monument in Port of Spain. Any time you stop and see the towers you know that the X's on the side of them was designed to protect the buildings during an earthquake.

An interesting fact to also note is that KFC Independence Square, which can be found as you walk straight down the promenade, is one of the world's most profitable outlet. Open 24/7, it may not be the most impressive looking outlet but it is the fastest place to get a quick bite before taking a taxi to leave Port of Spain.

I hate the fact that the city can be dirty and yes, it is not a colorful port of entry but it was built for functionality. Independence Square is the business hub for banks and Ministries, however, if you go out further towards the Savannah therein lies a taste of the beauty of Trinidad.
