“Palatable food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2014

I would recommend this place to anyone. I travelled very far to get this food but it was worth it. Great Caribbean food. Please try the barbeque pigtails and pork ribs. Heavenly!

“good lunch time food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2014

Good for lunch for the hardworking individual. prices are calculated per ib which is unusual especially as starches and some vegetables weigh considerably. Food is tasty and well prepared.

“Good food; Worth visiting.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

El Pecos Grill is a chain of restaurants that serves Caribbean food buffet style where you pay by weight. I visited the restaurants in Woodbrook (Western end of Port of Spain) and in Diego Martin. The food quality was consistent, so this review can cover both locations.

First of all, the place is almost always packed with both foreigners and locals - a sure sign of acceptance. Both places were neat and clean; sauce racks and consumables were adequately restocked as needed. The ambiance in Woodbrook was a lot nicer than Diego; the outside gallery is pretty much the only eating area available. Pleasant, even in a rainstorm (which was in full effect on our second visit) you are surrounded by a greenery oasis, even though you are in the midst of a bustling mixed suburb.

Now... for the food.

Very wide ranging in scope, there are enough things to make anyone - from vegan to carnivore happy. I had lamb, stewed beef and - a new one for me - barbecued pig tails, which I implore you to try (if you eat pork.) There were also several fish dishes, jerk & stew chicken - a wide assortment. Sides like Spanish rice, cassava, callalloo and macaroni pie (local version of mac and cheese) were plentiful and well done. Some of the meats were overcooked, but this is par for the course with West Indian cooking. They were, however, succulent and on par with good restaurant cooking. Read between the lines on that one.

Cost is a bit higher than what you would pay for a similar meal on the street, but still reasonable (approx. US$8-$10 per person). I have been there now at least five times, and consider it a very viable option when in the neighborhood and hungry. My teenage son (who has admittedly very varied international culinary tastes) liked it well enough to ask to go back.

In February 2014, there was a kitchen fire at the Woodbrook restaurant, causing a temporary closure. I have not heard of its reopening as of this writing, but I assume that it has.
