I am from Trinidad but I've lived abroad for the last 13 years. Tobago continues to be a source of mixed culinary options. You've got the high end stuff which is tourist focused and therefore priced accordingly and - if you're local - arguably under delivers. That said, what they lack in food they often make up for in setting. Tobago is littered with these and they have their place. Then there's the local side which constitutes curries, stews, creole and other heavy foods. Don't get me wrong, these have their place too but they can play havoc on your waist line (perhaps because they are too delicious?).

This place is a welcomed difference for Tobago. So good we went back twice. It is a quiet, unassuming booth on the Scarborough Esplanade away from the ferry and Fort George end and opposite the gas station. This place is primarily here to serve workers in Scarborough and perhaps school kids. In terms of atmosphere, look elsewhere perhaps unless, like me, you're on holiday and sitting in the sun next to a place playing old time calypso and soca is all part of the charm.

The focus here is on smoothies, richly-stuffed wraps, salads and freshly made juices. Chickens are rotisseried on site right by the window for you to see. They even offer protein shake options (complete with creatine!) for perhaps the most health conscious. The main lady here works with a small team in a small place. Both days were very busy so be prepared to wait a little while for whatever you order - even once you order it. By now you should appreciate nothing in Tobago happens quickly.

Between both days, we had the Twisted Gyro wrap, BBQ chicken wrap, chicken provolone sub, mango smoothie, berry blast smoothie, immunity booster juice and the detox juice (the latter, a post carnival requirement). I could wax lyrical about how good each of these were but this is a takeaway place so let's keep it simple. The food here is fresh, with fresh ingredients, not deep fried, smothered in cheese or dripping in oil. Sometimes it's nice to bit into something you know was made in front of you with the ingredients you want and none of what you don't. Please see photos I've taken for details.

We need more of this kind of place in Tobago. And we need it alongside the other stuff I was talking about. I wish them the best of luck and hope they expand to other busy parts of the island.

We visited Barcode last night after hearing so much about it.
Unfortunately we missed the famous karaoke (Thursdays) and the Friday lunch that is supposed to be a true joy.
You can watch sports on the different screens, listen to music, shoot pool or hang out on the patio facing the ocean. We tested the great variety of rums and even got into a chat with the owner, David, who took his time and guided us through the jungle of bottles in the bar. Even got to sample the recently released, limited edition, Angostura No 1. Wonderful!
We also grabbed a burger and chicken with a salad and enjoyed it outside on the patio in the gentle night breeze. I was very suprised at the low prices for the food.
I strongly recommend a visit and we will be back next Thursday and Friday for the action:-).

This place is located on Milford Rd on the out skirts of Scarborough with a great view of the water front. Quaint indoors and spacious out door deck. Food is standard sports bar fare except on Friday for lunch. It's called Sweet Hand Friday a local compilation of macaroni pie, peas, and rice and a meat. Personal favorite is stewed Ox Tail.
