My wife and I and our three boys ages 14, 12 and 10 travelled to Providenciales March 14th to 21st, 2009.
We flew out of Buffalo via U.S. Airways with a stop in Philadelphia on the way down and then direct into Provo.
The return flights were a bit of a pain as we had to fly Provo to Charlotte, Charlotte to Washington and then Washington to Buffalo.
U.S. Airways was fine as it usually is and we made all of our connecting flights despite being delayed on the flight from Charlotte to Washington on the way home.
This was our fourth trip to Provo (only second time for the boys).
We rented Villa Patricia at Ocean Point through Joanne Philips of TCI Safari.
Last year we rented a Villa on Bristol Hill Drive at Turtle Tail but this year wanted to experience a different part of the Island.
Villa Patricia is a beautiful Villa. It is not as large as the one we had rented in 2008 but is definitely higher-end in terms of the finishing and furnishings and has a much more intimate feel to it for a family vacation.
The Villa has a gorgeous kitchen with granite countertops and high-end stainless steel appliances. It is nicely furnished in Caribbean style with bright colours and has two large dining areas, one directly off the kitchen and one in an attached screened-in room with seating for eight people.
The Villa has a gorgeous pool and is perched on a cliff with outstanding views of Sapodilla Bay and the turquoise blue water.
The steps down from the pool deck to a small private beach are easily navigable and not too onerous at all. Many of the Ocean Point villas are significantly above the level of the water and have several flights of stairs to get down to the water, most with no direct beach access but simply steps that go right into the ocean.
Villa Patricia does have a large deck down at the ocean and a small sandy private beach which allows perfect water access for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. The small sandy beach is big enough for building sandcastles and for young children to play in the sand.
The Villa has a two person kayak which we used on a daily basis for kayaking over to Sapodilla Bay and around the point to very close by Taylor Bay Beach which is a gorgeous stretch of completely isolated and largely deserted sand.
The Villas at Ocean Point all have access to the beautiful tennis courts which are right there in the Ocean Point community.
As indicated, Taylor Bay Beach is approximately a two minute walk on a trail from Ocean Point Drive right onto the beach. Most days we went there, there was virtually no one on the beach. I ran the beach most mornings and a couple of mornings there was no one at all and other mornings I saw only one or two people.
We purchased all of our groceries from IGA Graceway, on Leeward Highway. Groceries are expensive, however, we liked Villa Patricia so much that we quickly abandoned our plans to eat out almost every night and ate out only three evenings and only twice at lunch.
We have previously experienced most of the restaurants on the Island and like most of them, however, we were so comfortable and relaxed at the Villa that we decided that barbequing and cooking at home would be more fun, relaxing and enjoyable.
The Villa has a full-size stainless steel built-in barbeque out on the pool deck.
It also has a tremendous gazebo pool side which provides welcome shade during the hot sun. It has multiple outside seating areas and a separate guest house which our two older boys loved occupying. The guest house is just a few steps from the main Villa and has its own king size bed, flat screen TV, sitting area, small kitchenette and full bathroom. It really is a self-contained suite.
The Main Villa has two large master suites both with king beds and their own ensuites.
The gazebo perched on the hill really does provide tremendous views and is nicely furnished with a number of chairs and centre table. The views are stunning!
We kayaked, swam in the ocean and in the pool everyday.
We also snorkeled at Smith’s Reef just off Turtle Cove a couple of days and as well at Malcolm Road’s Beach twice.
We have been to both before and like the snorkeling so another visit was a necessity.
Our car rental was from Scooter Bob’s. The vehicle was left for us at the airport as promised and we simple dropped in off at the airport upon our return. We had asked for a full sized SUV but the vehicle provided was a KIA Sedona van which was more than fine.
I was somewhat concerned upon seeing that vehicle was a van as opposed to an SUV since the road out to Malcolm’s Road Beach is quite rough and was concerned about talking the van. It appears, however, that the road out to Malcolm’s Road Beach has been slightly improved since last year with some of the bigger ruts and holes having been filled in. It’s still a bumpy rough ride but the van managed it with no problem.
In terms of restaurants, we ate one night at Hemmingway’s were there was live music. It was very good and dining outside at Hemmingway’s is always very nice. Our food was excellent and the service was great.
We had lunch twice at Horse-Eye Jacks. It is one of our favourite spots for lunch out in Blue Hills right on the beach. On both attendances, it was very quiet, the food was good with decent service as well.
We ate one night at Tiki Hut which is also one of our favourites. Again, dining outside dock-side at Turtle Cove is always a great experience. The food was very good and the service also great.
We also ate at Las Brisas at Neptune Villas. It is a very nice setting on Chalk Sound and our food and service were very good.
We also ate one night at Sharkbites also at Turtle Cove. That is always exciting for kids as the spotlights shining from the dock down into the water after dark usually reveal a number of fish that keep children occupied while they are waiting for their food to arrive. We saw a large Nurse Shark probably at least 8 feet long swim by, and got a very clear view of it.
We twice rented jet-skis from an operator at Sapodilla Bay. The jet-skis were beautiful machines and we took two machines for an hour and a half. If anyone is interested in this, I can give you the name and number of the operator if you email me. The boys had a blast on the jet-skis.
All-in-all, we had a tremendous trip and can’t wait to go back to Provo again.
If anyone has specific questions, feel free to email me and I will do my best to answer.
