“Will be going back next year!”
Reviewed 18 May 2006

We just got back from CG. We stayed May 10th through May 17th and it went way to fast! We chose a 1 bedroom penthouse for our stay.

From Rudy picking us up at the airport with a big smile and a cold cup of rum punch, to Charles helping with out bags on the last day it was all wonderful.

Nicole met us when Rudy dropped us off. What a sweetheart she is. Check-in in your room makes it so simple, especially after 3 flights to get there. We left San Diego at 8pm Tuesday, and arrived at Provo Wednesday at 2pm. To say we were exhausted was an understatement. Nicole made it all so simple and painless.

As soon as she left we wandered the penthouse. WOW! It was HUGE. And the view was breathtaking. The furnishings were clean, comfortable and in great shape. A kitchen with every appliance known to man AND a wine fridge. A comfortable king size bed with huge over sized pillows. None of that squishy useless down stuff. We both have iffy backs and for a change we slept great all week. Something very rare on a resort/hotel bed. A big walk in shower, a small pool size bathtub, double sinks, plenty of bathroom drawers and cupboards, even a bidet and robes. The bedroom had tons of drawers and a walk-in closet with plenty of hangers and shelves, plus a wall safe. The wrap around balcony had a table and chairs, plus two very comfy full length recliners. There was also a guest bathroom, dining area with table, a breakfast bar and a very nice living room with a gigantic tv. Both tvs had great reception from satellite feeds, and plenty of channels. Was also a washer/dryer in the unit.

The snorkeling is just outstanding and mere steps from all the units. We saw numerous sea turtles, two schools of barracudas, sea bass, rays, and hundreds of other types of fish. Even several conchs cruising along the bottom. The snorkeling gear is included in the room. The sand was like powdered sugar, and the softest I have ever been on. The visibility seems endless. We went through 8 underwater cameras and still did not get it all I'm sure.

The food is fabulous. We did not try Coyoba, but ate daily at the beach cafe. Breakfast (from a full menu) is included with the unit. Minor and Angie served us most often and were always friendly and greeted us by name from day one.

Nicole, Charles, Angie, Doreen, Ricardo, Minor and everyone else treat you like family and are the hardest working people I've seen. They know how to pamper you, from the included 30 minute massage (Which was sooo relaxing after all the flying) to Charles delivering sorbet to everyone on the beach each day. All the small touches, the intimacy of a small resort, being treated as family and not JUST a guest. All this and more make CG a rare oasis and we will be going back every year.

A tip for travelers who book this resort through luxurylink or any other 3rd party service: make sure you confirm all the details with the hotel. We confirmed the basics (hotel, airfare ect) but not the little details of our package. It turns out that the hotel did not have all the info; the room we were shown had little resemblance to an ocean front suite. Fortunately, a very nice person named Nicole sorted through it all - but it still took a few hours and a lot of worrying on our part - not the way you want to start a vacation. To the resorts credit, we were moved to the penthouse for the night and then transferred to our suite for the rest of the week.

The ocean front suites are very spacious (our even had stairs leading to the bedroom) and boast incredible views of the beach. It included a full kitchen, balcony, and a guest bathroom. It seems there are a lot of floorplans, so some suites are more luxurious (i.e. penthouse) than others. We were quite pleased with our room when all was said and done.

Our package included a de-stress massage and that was a welcome relief - very relaxing. The resort served sorbet on the beach and cold towels to all the guests. Snorkeling equipment is provided at no charge also.

We mostly ate at the beach cafe and really enjoyed all the meals (dinner was included in our package after we provided the resort with our original luxurylink email). Everything on the menu was delicious - each selection was great. The resort provides a hearty breakfast each day that guests can order off the menu (no cold buffets like some other places). The only drawback was the price - everything is very expensive (I think this was mentioned before in other reviews and it is true).

All in all, despite the glitch we were very satisfied on the whole.

We stayed in the 2 BR “Grand” Suite for two nights. Our room was very rundown. The pillows were cheap polyfill and were very stained. The comforters were worn and stained. Our bed was very bumpy. The walls seriously needed to be repainted. The bidet in our room was broken. All of the appliances need to be replaced. The refrigerator had spots all over the outside and the washer/dryer unit was old and had a hole in the drum. In the master bedroom the drapes were broken and wouldn’t close all of the way. Also, the light came streaming in through the holes in the blackout drapes in the master bedroom each morning. I requested extra sheets and blankets for the crib and the blanket was torn and had a huge hole in it. There were tons of tiny bugs in the kitchen and we didn’t buy food or even prepare meals there. I am not sure if each unit is individually owned and maybe some are better than others. I did peak into one they were cleaning and the furniture was identical however. Everything just seemed like it had been there forever – and needed to be thrown out. If we had been staying for more than two nights I would have tried to find another place.

The hotel is beautiful and the property is amazing. It really does seem like a garden there. Our suite was very large. The moving wall of windows was amazing. The view was beautiful. The food was great at the Beach Café. Plus, you are right in the sand! Our kids played with the giant chess board each day while we waited for our food. They loved that! We ordered room service and it was there in 15 minutes. The snorkeling right off of the beach was great (although their gear wasn’t as good as the gear on the Beach Cruise we took while there – water kept seeping into my mask). So, if you have good snorkeling gear, bring it! Bently was great at setting up our cruise. We had a difficult time booking a tour through Beaches (we have to go down to the tour desk only to find the time/day we wanted to go wasn’t available). At Coral Gardens we just called and Bently took care of everything (we even called from Beaches).

Everyone here was amazingly helpful and friendly. We just came from Beaches and the service was 100% better at Coral Gardens (and so was the food)! We would have LOVED this place if our room didn’t feel so…gross.

This place has amazing structure. It just needs some serious updating. New appliances, linens, and paint and you would have a 5 star place. However, right now it was a lot of money to pay for the value that we received. With the shape of the rooms we would not come here again and I would be embarrassed to recommend it to friends.

I do not understand the amazing reviews this place has. Yes, the service is wonderful but there are many other places with equally great service that are not so rundown. This place was expensive and I am very disappointed overall. I usually rely heavily on these tripadvisor ratings but will be much more cautious in the future.

Hi,
We are a couple from Spain (Barcelona), we are usually go to beaches in Spain, what's more, we always traveled to some islands before in Spain (Ibiza, Formentera...), but never in the Caribbean. We had high good expectations on this trip because we readed amazing reviews about the hotel and the island.. but here there is our review.....
First we have to say that the pick up from the airport to the hotel was correct but a little adventouros when we drove us on a 20 years old van which was stopping going uphill.. On the way to the hotel you could see that there is a lot of construction going on, and it's not lush at all.
Regarding the hotel, it's not a real resort, it's just a set of condors put together with a bar on the beach, a restaurant and a little pool. Our room was not an appartment wich probably are three times bigger than our room and more luxurios. We got at a king size bed dobble room at the rate of 250$ plus tax (300) with garden wiews what was more a palmtree wiew (that was what we just could see from our little balcony). It has just a shower, not bathtub, and we felt a lack of hygine products with no so good quality. To sum up, the room it's not big at all but clean and correct, but not fancy at all.
The beach caffe is in front of the beach and it has amazing views. The beach has a good snorkeling spot if the weather is good because if the water is a little bit rough you can see anything. Ah! and if you want a hammock get up eraly..
The restaurants on the island are overpriced and Beach Caffe and Coyaba are not an exception. Overall the food is correct, but without a large menu.
They offer you a complementary 30 minutes massage and it's worth it!
There are not any ammenities at the hotel, except the pool and the snorkeling.
Overall, it's a correct hotel and what we liked was the privacy it gives to you, but we don't think that there is a good realtion qualty price (the Plams offered a 300 room rate, and that's pretty and upscale hotel..)

We stayed for a week in a one bedroom ocean front suite. The ocean and beach were beautiful and the reef out front was very nice. The condo itself was nice too- althought I don't think that they're all the same. The staff in general were very nice, but... In the morning, if you wanted a chair on the beach and an umbrella, you either had to get up very early or track down the slow beach attendant and insist that he find you one. He often said no the first time you asked. This is not the sort of service that you expect at the price, and it adds a surprising amount of stress to your vacation. They were often out of towels, which is an easy to solve problem. Breakfast is included but is unusual and overcomplicated. Lunch at the beach cafe is also a bit off- food isn't bad but the choices are not quite what you expect. Dinner at the nice restaurant was excellent, although pricey. The island itself was beautiful as far as beaches, but otherwise reminded us of post Katrina New Orleans- trash not picked up, construction half-finished and abandoned, menu items not available, paper plates with dinner that costs $100 for two, and long waits for tables at restaurants.

All the glowing compliments heaped on this property and its staff are well deserved. I could repeat what everyone else said, but it seems unnecessary.

My husband and I (and daughters ages 3 and 5) were vacationing with my sister-in-law, her husband (and 3 kids – ages 13, 12 and 5) and we each had separate suites. We had a 1 bedroom ocean view and they had a 2 bedroom ocean grand. Both suites were very large and handsomely appointed (in fact, I would like to purchase the same wicker furniture for my home). Clean and comfortable. Views were spectacular.

The reef was unbelievably close and the snorkeling was spectacular. The older kids snorkeled at will everyday and loved it. The pools (which others might deem small) were perfect for our little ones who felt safe playing in them, and yet the older kids loved splashing around in them too. The little ones were equally happy playing on the beach since there was virtually no crashing waves due to the protection of the barrier reef. I never worried for their safety nor the safety of any of our belongings. Charles patrolled the beach every 45 minutes or so. He also served the afternoon sorbets on the beach – an especially refreshing touch.

The children ran around the property freely and because the property is smaller and more intimate, we all got to know the staff by name and they knew us on sight. Angie and Nuwan served us daily at the beach café and Angie had our drinks ready each morning as we arrived for breakfast. Now that’s service! Nicole, Hugh and Verne also were very attentive to all of our needs and Bently went out of his way to accommodate the guys in our party who wanted to do other activities.

Oh, and our stay came with complimentary ½ hour massages for each of us at the Ayurveda spa – Wonderful! The whole vacation couldn’t have been more relaxing and enjoyable.

We spoke with some of the visitors (from other resorts) who came to snorkel at our reef and within minutes I could see them eyeing Coral Gardens with envy. We plan to make this an annual trip. In fact, my sister-in-law is planning to return again in August.

The bottom line is: most of the guests we spoke to said that it was their 3rd, 4th or 5th visit back and the rest were (like us) new to the property and want to come back as soon as possible. With that kind of return rate, do you really need more details?

Our family of four stayed in a two bedroom penthouse at the Coral Gardens for seven nights in March. We very much enjoyed our stay and recommend them even though there were a couple of problems.

ACCOMODATION: The two bedroom penthouse suite was very large (about 2100 square feet), well appointed, had 2 1/2 baths, and had probably the best ocean view of any place we've stayed and we've been all over the world (see pictures). The view was enhanced by front and side glass walls that completely slide back into the wall. We were on the third (top) floor only a few steps from the water.

STAFF: This is a small hotel and you get to know the staff pretty well over the course of a week. Nuwan in the beach cafe was wonderful. Charles kept a tight rein on the beach umbrellas and was very helpful. Everyone was responsive and most of all friendly. Any special request was always accommodated if possible.

ACTIVITIES: The hotel has a coral reef right off the beach that offers pretty good snorkeling. We went out several times and saw several eagle rays (very big), sea turtles, barracudas, and tons of smaller fish. I've seen more fish other places, but the variety here was quite nice.

We did the Sail Provo 1/2 day snorkeling trip in the morning. Although it was a nice trip to a couple of islands, the snorkeling was disappointing. We saw far more right off the beach. The captain said it is kind of hit and miss.

Parasailing was available right from the beach and the kids took a tandem ride. We also had fun with the life size chess set right off the beach cafe.

DINING: We ate mostly at the beach cafe because it is very casual. The food was good with an indian flair and the service was very personal. We also dined out at the Tiki Hut which had a much bigger menu. The food was quite nice but the service was a little slow. Finally, we hit the Conch Shack which is very casual (ceiling, but no walls). Probably my favorite dish of the trip was their sauteed conch. Beware though, if you don't like conch or are alergic to shell fish you might want to go somewhere else - there's nothing but conch on the menu.

RENTAL CARS: You might want to stick with the major companies. I wanted an open jeep which were all sold out so I went to a local company. They were honest and easy to deal with but the product was on it's last legs. At Rent A Buggy our first had 69,000 miles on it, a broken windshield, inoperative radio, and fairly bald tires. We developed a leaking tire so we took it back mid week and exchanged it for a relatively young model with only 31,000 miles on it.

THE PROBLEMS: We didn't start off too well as the Coral Gardens failed to greet us at the airport. After a phone call to them, alternate transport was sent. You might want to confirm they have your proper arrival details.

Secondly, beach towels were hard to come by. It wasn't until our 4th day there we actually got 4 towels for four people, regardless of how early we arrived at the beach.

The quality of the Coral Gardens and the total experience we had caused us to quickly forget any difficulties encountered.
