This is our 5th stay at the Ports of Call hotel. Again, we feel like family here! The GM, Kendra, manages the hotel so expertly, we rarely see staff. Yet when we do, all are so friendly & genuinely care that our stay is comfortable. We visit Turks & Caicos so often because we love the beautiful beaches. When relaxing around the lovely pool area of Ports of Call - we need to remind ourselves to visit the beaches now & then. The location is excellent in that you're across the road to a fabulous supermarket, cute shops right on site and beautiful SaltMills Mall - within easy walking distance. We 're able to walk to a variety of restaurants and of course the beach is 3 minutes away. You simply cannot do better than PoC.

Room Tip: Rooms that walk-out to the pool area are my choice.

We just got back from Turks and Caicos last night and can't stop talking about our vacation. Ports of Call was a wonderful resort right in the center of an attractive tourist destination that was laid-back, low-key, had stunning scenery, wonderful restaurants and gracious people. We arrived on the last day of busy season - hot, tired from traveling and thoroughly annoyed at duties we paid on musical equipment brought to the Island for a performance. Winston greeted us with rum punch that was refreshing and a nice welcome to the island.

The hotel rooms: comfortably equipped. The bed was comfortable and I slept like a rock all week. The dresser drawers kept sticking. Really, that's the only thing I can complain about. Tile floors swept clean but could get sandy (you're at the beach, so that's to be expected). There was a sofa bed, and the mini fridge was PERFECT for stashing our drinks and snacks purchased at the Graceway Gourmet across the street.

Hotel amenities: Pool was clean, beautiful, perfect temperature and the landscaping around it was lovely. We enjoyed the pool every day. Plenty of chaise lounges, umbrellas and tables to eat at or play cards. Hot tub was nice - not too hot, it was perfect. We enjoyed that several times, too. Breakfast area - warm. We preferred to eat outside anyway. Plenty for breakfast: hardboiled eggs, ham, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, yogurt, bread, cereal, breads and pastries (my BF will sorely miss the mini pain au chocolat every morning), fresh fruit (coconuts from the trees one day!), sometimes waffles, coffee, tea, juices and infused water. Coffee and water all day/evening and always available. Afternoon pastries, too, made a nice snack. Hammocks were nice (one had unfortunately been broken). We used the laundry as well - which was fine, but slightly expensive at $5/wash and $5/dry. However, we know we were paying for convenience and wouldn't have used the dryer but we were packing/leaving that day. The bar was open 12-9, drinks reasonably priced. Bartenders always friendly and ready to converse. We also loved the ping pong table, pool table, and the RING GAME! Daniel showed us how to play, and we recited his "Let it go!" chant all week (and still after we arrived home).

Resort Pros: everything you need is within 5 minutes walk. Grocery store (some things expensive imports - choose wisely!), Pharmacy, several restaurants (good ones, too: Chopsticks, Seaside Cafe, Caicos Cafe, Patty Place, Via Veneto, Jimmy's Dive Bar), two spas (Spa Tropique and Spa Nadia), bakery, gift shops, dive shops. We didn't have a car and didn't wish we did, either. Also, quiet, low-key, fun resort. We played ping pong! Pool! The ring game! We sat outside and played cards. It was "old school" fun that we throughly enjoyed.

The staff - Winston, Daniel, the kind ladies at the front desk - all helpful and pleasant. Every time we came through, we got a friendly "hello, how are you today?" The pool was spotless, the pool furniture was perfect (want shade? sun? A table and chairs to eat at?), the hot tub was not too hot (that's a good thing!), hammock, laundry - we used all the amenities.

Cons? I'm really searching - laundry was sort of expensive ($5 per wash and dry). We paid for the convenience, clearly. But everything in TCI tends toward expensive. The grocery store was a lesson in "OMG, I hope companies pay their employees good money because it costs a lot to eat here." This resort is not on the beach, but the walk was quick and we became accustomed to it quickly. Really, that's it!

I will say, we NEVER had a problem finding chairs. They were often nicely arranged by the time we got to the beach. Some even had umbrellas already set and open, waiting for someone seeking a little relief from the sun.

We were very pleased and hope we can come back to TCI again soon and would definitely recommend Ports of Call for couples, friends, family vacations - it was budget friendly and conveniently located. Thank you Ports of Call!

Room Tip: Upper floors get nice island breezes at night. Talk to people - make friends with the staff and the...

On behalf of the entire team at Ports of Call I would like to thank you for taking the time to submit such a wonderful review...it is truly appreciated.
I know our staff really enjoy interacting with the guests and trying to make guests feel "at home" and it is nice when it is acknowledged by a guest.
Being relatively new to the hotel industry I didn't foresee the hurdles in marketing an off-beach resort even though we have our own staffed section on the beach only 300 yds away.
Your review will definitely assist us. Hope we have the priviledge of having you stay with us again.

Was totally value for money - my Husband and I would totally recommend this REsort - location is perfect as it is in the Shopping Area. Walking distance from the Supermarket.

We stayed at the Ports of call for 16 nights and on the whole the resort is good value and well positioned to venture to some of the best places on the island, we stayed as a family of three and found the amenities to be reasonably basic but adequate for our needs. The staff on the whole were very friendly and helpful the two bar guys who seemed to alternate duties were very helpful also. Like other reviewers we found the breakfast supply to be a little inconsistent and the lack of wi if in the rooms (one on the reasons we booked) to be frustrating but also not that it was a complimentary service. The resort itself pool, gym, jacuzzi and general amenities were very good for our needs. We also hired a car from the resort shop and were offered a good discount as residents. The resort is a few minutes walk away from great beaches and only a few hundred metres from other resort bars, restaurants and shops. Ideal for a relaxing island time holiday, if we ever in need of returning we would go back to Ports of Call

Thank you for submitting such a great review. I am happy you enjoyed both our resort and the island. I looked into your comment on poor Wiffi reception as we usually have a strong signal. Apparently a week ago the local provider came in and upgraded all our equipment and we have been experiencing problems ever since. Not sure what the answer is but I am confident we will have it solved soon. We also have just imported new signal "extenders" which will ensure even better Wiffi reception than we previously enjoyed pre the equipment change.
Hope you will have the opportunity to stay with us again..

No WIFI in the rooms, I had to come down to use WIFI. We reported the WIFI issue and was told that someone will look into it the following morning but no one called us and the WIFI in the rooms has not worked since we checked in. Water was turned off from 9am to 11pm 2 days ago, we had to go to Regent Grand where our friends stay to shower after a day out in the beach.

Very surprised that you would overall rate us as only Two Star when your individual rankings for our location, cleanliness, sleep quality, service, etc were all Four or Five Stars. Unfortunately we had a major water pipe break and the entire complex's water had to be turned off for almost a day and there was nothing we could do about it. Occassional water turn-offs are common at resorts...even the one your friend stayed at where the daily rates triple ours.
My apologies re your problems with the WIFI, we normally receive praise for our Wfifi service that unlike many resorts, is provided FREE to our guests but there is no excuse for our staff not keeping you informed. Not sure why it was not performing in your room but we are in the midst of enhancing it.
Judging by your individual ratings it apears that you overall enjoyed your stay with us and hopefully your low overall rating was a result of one or two specific incidents and not indicitive of your overall impression of our resort.

We selected this resort because of the close proximately to Dive Provo. The resort is very nice, clean, great staff, and good facilities. We stayed on a ground level two bedroom. The room was clean and nice. The Wifi service was very good from our room. We always had hot water and room service always did an excellent job. The room decorations were nice. They provided complimentary breakfast which consisted of your choice of 3 cold cereals, hard boiled egg, pastries, diced ham/cheese, yogurt, apple, juice and coffee/tea. The resort is located in the best area of the town being so centrally located to restaurants, dive shop, bike shop, coffee houses, markets, and beach. The beach is located just across the street in very easy walking distance. Less than 3 mins and the walk there is fun and pleasant. The center plaza that you cross through is filled with lots of shops, restaurants, with plenty of photo opportunities. We had dinner at the Caicos reef, Danny buoy, Seven, Bella Luna, Flamingo, and Mango Reef. All the restaurants were excellent. The food and service at the places far exceeded our expectations. They all have exceptional chefs. Our diving experience was great! The dive operators were Dive Provo and they were all fantastic! Their boats are well equipped and in great shape. We dived 2 dives a day for 5 days straight. All the dive locations had plenty to see with lots of life. DIve Provo was always on time, provided the transportation to/from the marina, loaded all our equipment, rinse our equipment/suits, provided water, fruit, and sandwiches. All of the dive operators were exceptional and we were impressed with their skill and professionalism. Turks and Caicos is a beautiful island to visit. They have the bluest waters I've ever seen. The beaches are gorgeous. This is a great place for couples, families, everyone. The islanders are extremely friendly, polite, and well educated. I highly recommend everyone to visit this place.

Room Tip: I recommend a ground level since there are no elevators and it leads right to the pool.

On behalf of myself and all the staff at Ports of Call I would like to thank you for taking the time to submit both a detailed review as well as such a favourable one. While we do occassionally mess up, we honestly believe we provide a great location, clean facilities, good service and the best value on the island. I hope you will have the opportunity to stay with us again.

I've recently stayed at the Ports of Call Resort and am a realistic, experienced traveller so there will be no exaggerations or unfair comments made in my review.
The Good:
1. Ports of call is very conveniently located. Although not directly on the beach, it is a short walk from the beach (5-7 minutes) which is really not bad when considering how much money you're saving compared to any beach - front hotel. The hotel is also perfectly centrally located - 2-3 min walk away from a Scotia Bank and upscale grocery store, close to many restaurants, shops, a bakery etc...
2. The hotel's service is fine. Although the requested king bed and higher - level room requested was not fulfilled (got 2 double beds on the ground floor), it's understandable that not everyone's requests can be met. Anytime we asked the front desk for something, it was usually done in a timely fashion (ex: in - room safe was not functioning, called front desk and they sent someone to fix it and everything was fixed in less than 10 min from the time I placed the call. Also, front desk placed reservations for us upon request). They didn't go above and beyond or give outstanding customer service but they fulfilled their due diligence and that's good enough for a budget hotel (obviously would expect more from a prestigious, renowned, upscale hotel but for the price you pay they do a good enough job).
3. Quiet, well maintained grounds with a relaxing atmosphere.
4. Rooms are clean.
Opportunities (the "bad"):
1. Pool needs cleaning, waters are a little murky. I visited quite a few other hotels on the island and they were all much cleaner. It's not super-dirty or gross but can use a little more TLC.
2. Points of mattress spring were protruding from the sides of my mattress. Scraped my legs when getting in/out of the bed. Did not make any complaints about it, just tried to avoid the sides of my mattress but in retrospect, this is something I should've mentioned as it's below par even for a budget hotel.
3. This point is not a huge deal but would be a nice to have somewhere to hang bathing suits to dry (a clothesline in the shower or some hooks in the bathroom perhaps?).
4. Charge of 8$/day for beach umbrella rental should be removed. The umbrella belongs to the hotel and are not from a 3rd party, there should not be a charge for these. Granted, there's no charge for the lounge chairs but with the sun/heat in TCI, for many people shade is not a luxury and rather a necessity so they should he complimentary om a first come first serve basis as the 2 free sun huts they also have on their reserved section of the beach.
5. Breakfast is another area that can use soon improvement. There's not enough food for all the guests. BF is served until 10am but if you get there after 9am, there's pretty much nothing left (the selection is already pretty basic to start with). Not a big deal for those who were not counting on the hotels breakfast which was not really a selling point for me personally but some who might not budget BF costs into their vacation due to their relying on the hotel BF may be disappointed.

Overall, yes of course their are some trendier, fancier, prettier hotels/resorts on the island that may offer nicer accommodations with more luxurious features & amenities but if that's what you're looking for please don't expect to get it on the cheap. The cost of your stay at Ports of Call is perfectly priced for what you get and you will be happy with what you get if your expectations are realistic based on what a good budget hotel would have to offer. It did the job for the week I was there and by no means is this hotel a sleezy, crumby, dirty motel it's just a budget-friendly, basic resort that is clean and offers satisfactory service.

We appreciate your favourable comments on our location, value and staff. My apologies that the pool cleanliness was not to your standards and I assure you that this is quite unusual as we usually receive good reviews on our pool. Action re your concerns over the rooms requiring more hooks was initiated a month ago when we started installing an extra hook and a retractable clothes line in every bathroom. As I am sure you can appreciate we can only do this when a room is empty for a few days so we do not anticipate all rooms being completed until the end of April.
We agree that compared to some North American hotels, where food supplies are a third the cost, our complimentary continental breakfast offerings could be enhanced and we are making steady improvements including the introduction of eggs, meat and cheeses this past December and pancakes earlier this month, however, we must keep in consideration that this is a FREE breakfast and our rates already reflect the best value on the island.
The $8. daily fee for the beach umbrellas was initiated two years ago to partially offset the costs of the beach shuttle and beach attendent service that we started when we purchased the resort, services that, to our knowledge, no other off-beach resort provides. We will be eliminating the umbrella charge and the energy surcharge effective Dec 22 2014 when we introduce our slightly higher 2015 rates.
