This is a lovely resort, currently experiencing a major refurbishing of main lobby, rooms in main building and one of their restaurants.
There are many pluses: lovely beaches on site, a fantastic kid club (first time my kids asked to go back to a kids club ever..and we've even been on disney cruises which are notorious for pleasing kids), a good breakfast, lovely staff and a sense of history if you look very slightly beyond the surface. The grounds are expansive (and frankly, the walks are not excessive as it's rather healthy to walk a little). I liked the pools, they are really not that minuscule.
One minus for us was the room: we stayed in the family cottage: very very affordable and comfortable but not esthetically pleasing. Also, the floors get unavoidably sandy. The restaurant on site is expensive and too stuffy for kids at night.

The Buccaneer was great from day 1. We had great meals, met great people and had great weather! The people on St. Croix are the nicest around. From the hotel staff (the concierge being my favorite) to the local shop and restaurant owners, everyone was wonderful. Some advice, rent a car for a few days to see the island and avoid really high taxi prices. Dive through Dive Experience, a smaller shop with terrific people. Food is expensive but we tried everything anyway. The Buccaneer has fantastic food, never a disappointment, but for a change, Cheeseburgers in America's Paradise, Duggan's Reef and Rum Runners had great food too. The casino is small but nice if you want to gamble. We did snorkeling with Mile Mark who took us to see sharks and some extra things on Buck Island (another must see). The Sea Plane to St. Thomas is a quick way to island hop too! Would recommend St. Croix and the Buccaneer in a heart beat for a vacation! We stayed 3 extra days!

We were told the Buccanneer is the best hotel/resort - what are the rest like?

We are upgraded automatically to a suite when we arrived, with fruit etc but the room and bathrooms [2] in the main house were very dated and oldfashioned. Wireless internet access was only available on the room terrace where you were subject to vicious mosquito attacks!

Dinner on the terrace was a huge disappointment - dated 1970s type food - massive portions of dreary tasteless stuff cooked in rich sauces, hardly ideal when the temperatures are in the high 80s/low 90s. The restaurant staff were charming, apart from the so-called Maitre'd who was a complete waste of space and time.

Breakfast was available at the beach front restaurant - the buffet was good and the selection wide. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble.

Our overall opinion was of a resort that is living on past glories. However, we understand that the next generation of the family are getting their feet under the table so we hope that things will improve. Certainly, there is a lot of redevelopment work going on so we we can but hope for the best and wish them well.

St Croix needs a world-class hotel/resort and we understand that Marriott have bought another hotel so there will be competition!

A bit of a disappointment overall, after astaying at the super Ritz Carlton resort on St Thomas, which we highly recommend.

Now I know .. it was not worth the wait, the time, nor the effort. Sent lots of advance e-mails requesting transportation from the airport, reservations at the dinner dining restaurant choice, at the spa .. . made specific points of who was traveling together, etc. dates of arrival, NONE OF WHICH WAS NOTED< ADHERED< TO OR FOLLOWED UP on in any way shape or form. While our room was lovely, in the new Doubloons, the isolation, the totally unreliable shuttle service, the lack of dining options, the absurdly shameful excuse for a FRESH WATER swimming pool, made our stay a very short one indeed!!!! Breakfast was to be included and when we showed up with more than one hour left for the hours of operations found virtually NOTHING to eat from the buffet ... shabby indeed, with negligent service with attitude!!! We left to go to to another island (because we could afford to do so while others might not be so lucky) ..where they actually appreciated our business, and cared about their service.

It is a nice property BUT>>> Watch your stuff. The housekeeping is extremely shady. I had a PSP stolen and reported it immediately. The response I got was "I guess you should watch what you leave in your room." What the hell. I mean my room wsa locked securely and the housekeeper was the only one that could have taken it. The management doesnt care.

My wife and I stayed at the Buccaneer for our honeymoon. It was incredibly relaxing. We stayed in the off-season (Summer) and got a free upgrade to their honeymoon suites, which was spacious and had an amazing view. The only downside to the off season was that they were doing renevations on one of their restaurants so they only had one place open for breakfast, two beachside bars open for lunch, and only one rather expensive place open for dinner (and taxis are about $20 round trip for 2 people to go to Christensted). Overall we had a great stay. Our room was amazing, food was pretty good, and the service was excellent. Everyone on the staff was willing to do anything to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. I would recommend the Buccaneer to anyone staying in St. Croix

We had a wonderful time at the Buccanneer and I think it is the best bet for St. Croix. Upon arrival, we were upgraded from a regular room, which would have been in the great house, to a room near the ocean. Upon seeing the area where the great house is, I am quite relieved that happened. The area where the great house is is a steep walk to the beach and I would have been very disappointed if we had stayed there.

The room we were moved to was lovely- huge bathrrom, which is a very important thing to me, and a rather large room space. The furnishings could use an updating, but there were in good condition. The cleaning staff did a good job, but they often came later in the day, which I find annoying. But they left a ton of towels everyday, which I loved.

The food at the beachside restaurant was good, but service was spotty. The main restaurant for dinner was excellent, but overpriced. The hotel is also pretty dead in the evenings, but that seems to be the case with much of the island. We ventured into town for dinner 4 nights and we were quite pleased with all of our meals, and suprisedly so as the town is kind of dumpy.

The pools at the resort leave much to be desired, but the ocean is very calm, so it's not really a big deal, but if you are looking for a good pool scene, this is not the hotel for you. The staff near the beach is very friendly and helpful.

Definitely make the trip to Buck Island. The tour we were on stopped on the island and the beach and water there are as pretty as you can find. The water was much clearer there than it was off the beach near the hotel. There is pretty decent snorkeling off the hotel beach and we also traveled to Cane Bay- very pretty. We also stopped at a little shack on the way and had the BEST burgers I have ever tasted.

So, the Buccanneer is a nice resort, but it needs some updating. The area around the rooms is a bit unkempt, but overall we had a good experience, but I probably won't return to St. Croix any time soon.
