“Wedding party at The Palms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2010

I can't say enough about the quality service and ambiance of The Palms - the attention to our guests from the states and the food and service for our daughter's wedding on January 1 was absolutely top notch - I highly recommend The Palms for a wedding and for a place for your guests to stay - beautiful location, wonderful service and attention to hotel guests and guests of your event. Thank you to everyone at The Palms....

Service was excellent, everyone was very out going and eager to help. The owners of the resort took time to speak with guests and provide helpful traveling advice about the area. The beach front was quiet but beautiful. The restaurant and bar had great food and selection. At night we were able to mingle with other resort stayers that shared the same relaxed friendly demeanor to that of the staff. I highly recommend this resort to anyone visiting St. Croix, because of the great beach and prime location close to Christiansted, which has excellent restaurants and shopping for tourists.

The staff is very pleasant and despite being sold out, the place seemed to be very quiet. Probably due to the fact that it is spread out on a relatively large piece of property. On the downside -- as others have noted, the rooms are showing alot of wear and tear. Hardware was badly rusted. I know that it's tough given that it's right on the water, but they are not keeping up in the battle to prevent rust. Tiles were cracked and worn. Shower heads are pretty low and I'm only average height (5'10").

It's in a beautiful location and the snorkeling is terrific. The beach is a little rocky in some spots but generally nice. Food is above average but not great. I ate at the restaurant a few years ago on another trip and bar menu has not changed. They need to change things up a bit and given the relatively few people who were eating at the bar, it looks like others agree with me.

Also, it is somewhat isolated and while they have a few toiletries available for sale, there is no convenience shop. That would be a major positive addition for them.

Nice people, good location, needs better maintenance.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your comments. Some of the patio doors have been in service for a while and, although they still work ok, between the sand and salt water they are just about ready to be retired. We are aware of this and, under our maintenance program, have already replaced half of them, with the remainder being replaced this year. Unfortunately, the door in your room had not been done yet. And as with tile floors everywhere, a few of our floor tiles have cracked over the years. Where it's needed we replace them. Glad you enjoyed the snorkeling, the beach and the restaurant. The bar menu was actually only introduced shortly after we purchased the hotel a couple of years ago. Before that time the restaurant menu was available at the bar. We do make changes to the menu a few times a year, but we are careful to not change it up much. Our guests like what they like and it's important that their favorites be there. You are right on about The Palms seeming to be quiet even when it's busy. That's the beauty of it. With only 40 rooms on 8 acres, there's a lot of room to relax.

This is our third annual pilgrimage to St. Croix and to The Palms. The property is extraordinary! An intimate property that truly feels like home is why we continue to return each year. This year we returned to a newly renovated building. Nicely appointed bathrooms and updated mahogany furniture along with breath-taking views of the ocean and stunning blue skies provided the beautiful peace we desperately needed. The onsite restaurant serves a delicious breakfast and wonderful dinners. The bar seating with the ocean view is calming and serene. The staff feel like family--warm and friendly--but always vigilant to ways they could make our stay more comfortable. It's the little things that really make a difference at The Palms. Julie, the General Manager, really makes us and other quests feel as if they are royalty! If you're looking for a quiet, intimate hideaway with stunning ocean views and a gentle, calm relaxed pace...The Palms is the best!

I'd love to rate the Palms a 5 because there were so many good things about it, but it wasn't perfect IMHO. We were there the week before Christmas, and the hotel was very busy hosting Christmas parties for island businesses, so the lobby and formal function room was nicely decorated. One evening, there was a huge party so the general manager provided free taxi service into Christiansted to get dinner because they were not providing table service to the hotel guests that night (just takeout I believe), so that was nice. The owners themselves were not there so we missed out on the reef snorkeling tour- a big disappointment. In summary, here is the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good: great food, friendly people, lovely beach if you want to snorkel, great bar area to gather at during happy hour with inexpensive happy hour drinks ($3 for anything), very good service for dining, good front desk service for taxis. The bad: we could not get decent sheets on our bed despite complaining twice, once to the front desk, then once to the general manager. The bottom sheet and some of the pillow cases were always worn and pilly, day after day, for the 4 days we were there. The room, number 12, a deluxe beach front room on the second floor, had a beautiful view of the beach and ocean, but only if you were standing up because the balcony had a solid wall on all sides! You couldn't sit on the balcony or the bed to read or relax and look at the ocean because you couldn't see the ocean. What a disappointment, since the beach was only about 75 feet away. The lounge chairs provided on the balcony are rigid plastic with no cushions, so generally sitting on the balcony was out of the question. The room had lovely sliding glass doors on the entire wall facing the ocean, but no sliding screen door, so you couldn't leave the doors open to allow the wonderful Christmas winds in or you'd get mosquitoes, so in the evening, we were required to close the doors and run the air conditioner, another disappointment. I would have loved to listen to the ocean at night. The ugly: moldy, used coffee filters left in our in room coffee maker - couldn't bring myself to use the coffee maker.
So, I think the Palms could improve a bit. Definitely the bright spots are the dining/service, bar and the beach. The room, not so much. If you want a beach view you can see while sitting on your balcony, get the first floor room, which has a little patio instead.

The Palms is very much a part of the community. We host many special occasions (birthdays, weddings, etc.) and we are especially involved with many non-profit support organizations (Boys & Girls Club, Women’s Coalition, etc.). But we always make sure that our guests are pampered during events. The bar menu is normally available, along with room service, pizza delivery, free taxi to town, and in most cases, guests can attend the function and meet some interesting people. I’m sad that you missed the snorkeling tour – it is always a big hit. I am off island occasionally for family and business, but we always have another proficient snorkeler from the hotel to escort our guests around the reef. Several tours were done the first week I was away. I spoke to Julie, the General Manager, about the bed sheets and she is checking into why your request for different sheets wasn’t satisfied. Bottom line - we have new sheets, they should have been put on, they weren’t, we messed up. Not much I can do about the solid balcony walls, but I understand your comments. They are a structural part of the balcony and do help deflect some of the wind energy during storms. I can tell you that we are in the process of replacing all the rigid plastic lounge chairs on our decks with comfortable vinyl strap chairs. A dirty coffee maker in the room is unacceptable – full stop. I don’t know how, but it managed to slip through our room double-check process. Our head housekeeper has assured us that it will not happen again. Your enjoyment of your visit here is our top priority. Please let us know on the spot if there is anything we can do to right a wrong, or improve upon, to make your trip better.

All we wanted was sand, water, and peaceful beauty. We got that and so much more. We felt like we had the whole island to ourselves when we lounged on our beachfront patio, it was great. To top it off, the staff is terrific, the food is great, and the owner and his family take you out into the breathtaking snorkeling reef, located right in front of the property. Class act all the way, loved this place!

What a great review - thank you! We did have a great time here with you guys. The reef here in front of the hotel (Long Reef) offers some of the best snorkeling on the island. And as you saw on our snorkel trips, the water flow over and through our reef is what contributes greatly to the diversity of marine life here. Understanding this contributes greatly to the education and enjoyment of the experience. We are familiar with the reef and its critters, and we like nothing better than to share the experience with our guests. Step this up to a night snorkel, and you add a totally new dimension. It may not be for all, but for the intermediate snorkeler with an adventurous streak, seeing an octopus, squid, eel, lobster, etc. at night can be very exciting. We do encourage all of our snorkeling guests to talk to us first so we can provide a reef orientation. In fact, we will be happy to tag along on a familiarization tour of the reef if you want. We can even set you up with the necessary equipment. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced snorkeler, there is something here for everyone.

We were so well cared for. The breakfasts out on the veranda were leisurely and delicious. Staff was so friendly and courteous. We live on St. Thomas and wanted to explore St. Croix. Very helpful with directions and suggestions of where to go, where to eat. Jump up in Christiansted was so much fun. We'd return in a heartbeat. Beach was nice but the water happened to be rough while we were there so snorkeling was not great. Great location too!
