If you are stopping in Frederiksted and did not buy a ship shore excursion before exiting the ship....It is an easy walk from the pier through the gates of the port to the small town.

People are friendly, a few churches to see, waterfront war memorials, limited restaurants within walking distance...the promenade allows for photo ops of the water, palm trees, ships in port and the war memorial. You don't need a map to wander. The churches are easily visible. The few stores sell the usual trinkets and liquor/rum. The rum and liquor is more expensive than St Martin or St Thomas. Self guided tour...allow 30 to 45 minutes and you have seen it all, including promenade, tents and shops.

Found a free wifi signal unsecured, no password required, in a parking lot, at time of this review, near the cruise port and then followed the signal strength to a tiny bar/restaurant across the street and by the police station. Standing under the roof/awning of the police station or in front of the small green painted restaurant we had a good signal and checked our mail for about 45 minutes. Could see the walkway back to the cruise ship from where we were standing. By the time my husband and I were finished reading our mail between the small restaurant and police station, there was a crowd of 20 or more all standing using their portable electronic devices.

As previous reviewers stated, it looks run down and impoverished, but the people are friendly.

There are lots of drivers, taxis and people selling tour excursions and island tours. It would not take more than an hour to see the town of Frederiksted on foot. After that I suggest, continuing on to Christiansted or another part of the island, via a ship tour or private tour.

I provided pics to give you an idea of what you would see walking the downtown area.

The town was deserted when we visited it. There were hardly any stores opens and only a couple places to eat. This may have had something to do with there being no cruise ships in port at the time. I am guessing when on of these big ships comes into port the street vendors and store fronts open up in a hurry for that easy tourist cruise ship cash.

I've been to the Caribbean many times and know what to expect - that you often have to travel through some depressing and even seedy looking areas to get to the scenes you see in post cards.

Frederiksted is one of those places. It was a virtual ghost town the entire 10 days we were on the island - except for the two days that cruise ships were in port when shops that we didn't even know were there suddenly opened their doors.

We were warned not to walk to/from Frederiksted after dark. We didn't encounter any people that made us feel unsafe. On the contrary, everyone we met said "Good Morning!" or "Hello!" but the appearance of the town and neighborhoods around it were very seedy looking.

Pretty much a place the locals don't like for tourists to be. Almost no shopping. No reason to be here unless you're going to rainbow beach right beyond Frederiksted
