Owner description: Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

The 99 (+) steps are located behind Government Hill or the Emancipation Gardens. Go toward the 1829 house and climb the hill to the right of it. Bring water with you because you wont realize it, but you will be very thirsty by the time you are up and then back down again. Be careful of the narrow streets. We had locals swearing at us for being in the road. It is VERY narrow. The steps are slanted downward which isn't a problem going up, but on the way down it feels more like you are falling down the stairs instead of stepping. Use the railing. Obviously this is not handicap accessible. Once you get to the top, go right and it will lead you to a view overlooking the down town area. This was a great view that was free. If you continue up the hill, it will lead you to Blackbeard's castle. The entrance fee was $10.00 per person and it was just a tower. We did not pay to go in, but you can get a nice photo of it from the gate.

We happened across the steps on our way to Blackbeard's Castle, which we walked to. I'm not sure I'd have sought out of the steps for the sake of seeking them out though. Just a bunch of steps leading up a hill really. However they do take you to higher ground which affords you great views of St. Thomas so...that's something.

Our family of 4 set out to visit some of the historical sites of St. Thomas/Charlotte Amalie when we were in port with our cruise. We stopped by the information center and the gentlemen was very helpful including a map. This was free of charge. We set out on a 30 minute walk around the harbor to arrive in Charlotte Amalie. The walk was nice and slow. We first arrived at the legislative building and made our way towards Hotel 1889 which is near the base of the 99 steps. Be careful, the traffic is hectic! We looked upward and knew we could do it. It is not as bad or as difficult as you might think. We climbed the steps and the view was awesome. We then went around the bend and up another hill to Blackbeard's Inn. A great family activity! We really enjoyed it! Our children are 9 and 13.

We did the 99 steps (which we were told it was actually 102 by one person and 103 by someone else!) on our walking tour. It's pretty much just some old steps - nothing overly exciting. But, it did make for some pretty cool pictures of our kids running up them & we didn't need to go out of our way to check them out.

The 99 steps is a part of Black Beards (the infamous pirate) Castle in the town of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas Island in the US Virgin Islands.
